Observatorio demográfico Nº 3 Proyección de población Preface This issue of the Demographic Observatory presents national population estimates and projections for the 20 countries of Latin America for the period 1950-2005, disaggregated by gender and five-year age groups. This issue updates the information published in Demographic Bulletin No. 73 of January 2004. The methodological notes contained in this issue also provide a brief description of the methodology used in preparing the estimates and projections, and list the data sources used for each country. As usual, this issue of the Demographic Observatory contains an analytical section, the purpose of which is to provide a general overview of the information presented. Table 1(a) shows the total population of the 20 countries of Latin America (as well as that of the Caribbean countries) for the period 1950-2050, and table 1(b) gives the population of the same countries by calendar year for the period 2005-2015. Tables 2 to 10 present a series of demographic indicators such as growth rates, global fertility rates and gross mortality and birth rates. Tables 11 to 31 provide detailed population data for Latin America as a whole and for each of the 20 countries. Lastly, the CD-ROM enclosed with this issue includes, in addition to the tables contained in the printed version, information on estimates and projections of the economically active population in urban and rural areas and life tables consistent with the data provided. This information is also available on the Internet (http://www.eclac.cl/celade).
