Hialeah Educational Academy participated in a mock DUI / Texting and Driving presentation on April 22 at
Fire Station # 7 presented by The Hialeah Community Coalition & Community Partners. The stage presentation,
acted out by HEA students, demonstrated the harsh reality of what can happen as a result of drinking and
driving or texting and driving.

Musical Motivation: HEA Creates ‘Spanglish’ FSA Music Video

When HEA is in testing mode, nobody is immune to the pressure. The long
hours of tutoring and preparing takes a toll on the entire student body, faculty and staff. This year, Ms. Gilmore, a middle school language arts teacher, came up with a unique and entertaining idea to help everyone relax and
laugh a little. She wrote and recorded a parody, or an imitation of a song
with deliberate exaggeration for comic effect, of the hit single “Hasta Que
Se Seque El Malecon” by Jacob Forever, renaming it “Hasta Que. Pasemos
el FSA.”
“At first we were going to use the song ‘Sorry’ by Justin Bieber, but I noticed on a field trip that a lot of the kids were singing the malecon song, so
we decided on that one,” informed Ms. Gilmore. “Its purpose was to ease
the pressure associated with the FSA and testing.”
HEA debuted the music video during the Middle School FSA Pep Rally on
April 7 in order to help boost the pupils’ spirits a week prior to the exams.

“I liked it. It was very catchy. I even showed it to
my mom,” said 8th grader Andy Garcia.
Yo nunca me perdi’
The music video included a few of the school’s beloved teachers, firefighters and staff, as well as students.
“Mr. Rivero was the star of the video,” said an anonymous bulldog. Some other favorite scenes included Mr.
Gasiba’s dab, the cafeteria staff dancing, the male teachers hitching a ride in the golf cart, and Mr. Alvarez and
Mrs. Puente singing in the hallway.

One of the seniors who participated in the video,
Darielis Vicente, said that the part she enjoyed the
most was the dancing, although it was hard to learn
the moves at first. When asked why the school chose
her to be in the video, she responded: “I have school
spirit and I enjoy having fun.” The music video was
filmed all around the home of the Bulldogs, including
the office, cafeteria, fire station and police station.

The song was such a hit that local radio station Power
96 aired it on the morning show and interviewed Mr.
Alvarez about it. As of print date, the video had close
to 4,000 views on YouTube.

Practicing Parenthood

They didn’t cry or wet their diapers like real
newborns, but the Bulldog family certainly treated the
flour bag babies that the Early Childhood students carried around for two weeks like their very own. Throughout the month of May, dozens of female students pretended to be teen moms, not only for a project grade, but
for the real-life experience. According to the Center for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a total of
249,078 babies were born to women aged 15-19 years
old in 2014. “Teenage pregnancy is an epidemic in this
country,” explained Mrs. Garcia, the Early Childhood
Program teacher, “This project teaches students how big
of a responsibility being a teenage parent is.”
Premature parenthood is the leading cause of
high school dropouts. More than 50% of teen mothers
never graduate from high school. “I’ve learned that having a baby is a lot of work and responsibility, but it will
also be a lot of fun when I am older and ready for a family,” said Keily Alfonso, a sophomore.
Not only are the students taking this project seriously, but the HEA staff as well. “You can be ‘fined’ for
child neglect and reported to Ms. Garcia. As a result, you
can fail the project,” warned Gipsy Izquierdo, a junior.
Teachers even created nurseries in their classrooms to
accommodate the babies and reported any mistreatment
of the dolls to Ms.Garcia.
2nd Annual HEA Golf Classic
On May 13, community leaders, teachers, corporate sponsors
and golf enthusiasts enjoyed a golf tournament at Shula’s Golf
Club in support of our school. All the money raised at the Hialeah Park Racing and Casino/HEA Golf Classic will go to the
HEA Athletic Department to cover expenses from the 2015-16
school year and put us in a position to get off to a great start next
school year! A special thank you to our 2016 sponsors: Hialeah
