EL MENDIGO AVARICIOSO
THE GREEDY BEGGAR
Un mendigo iba por los caminos pidiendo de casa en casa y malviviendo de lo
que por ahí le daban.
A beggar was walking along the roads begging from house to house and living
badly on what they would give him.
Un día llamó a una casa para pedir limosna, como tenía por costumbre, pero en la
casa le dijeron que ellos también eran muy pobres y que no podían darle nada. El
hombre insistió.
One day he knocked at the door of a house to ask for alms, as usual, but in the
house they told him that they were poor too and could not give him anything.
The man insisted.
-
Por favor, déme lo que sea.
-
Please, give me what you can.
Pero ellos le decían:
But they said to him:
−
No tenemos nada, que nada nos sobra.
−
We haven’t got anything, we have nothing left over.
Y el pobre seguía insistiendo:
The poor man kept on insisting:
-
Déme aunque sea un garbanzo.
-
Give me something..if only a chick pea.
Para que se fuese le dieron un garbanzo y siguió su camino.
To get him to go away they gave him a chick pea and he continued on his way.
Así hasta que llegó a otra casa y, como era de noche, pidió cobijo en ella. Le
dijeron que entrara, y entonces el mendigo le dijo a la señora que lo atendió.
Eventually he came to another house and, as it was dark, he asked for shelter
there. They told him to come in, and then the beggar said to the woman who
served him.
-
Señora, ¿dónde puedo poner este garbanzo, que es lo único que tengo?
-
Where can I put this chick pea which is the only one I have?
-
Déjelo usted ahí, en la repisa –dijo la señora.
-
Leave it there on the shelf..said the woman
Cenó y durmió en la casa y a la mañana siguiente, cuando fue a buscar su
garbanzo, no lo encontró; y se lo pidió a la señora:
He had dinner and slept in the house. The following morning, when he went to
look for his chickpea, he couldn’t find it and he asked the woman:
-
Señora, déme usted mi garbanzo, que no lo encuentro.
-
Give me my chickpea..I can’t find it
La señora respondió:
She replied:
-¡Ay, que se lo ha de haber comido una gallina!
-A hen must have eaten it!
Entonces el mendigo se enfadó:
Then the beggar got angry
-
Pues si no me da usted el garbanzo, me da la gallina que se lo comió.
-
Well, if you don’t give me the chick pea, give me the hen which ate it.
Empezaron a discutir y al final, por no oírle más, le dieron la gallina.
They began to argue and finally, so as not to hear him any more , they gave him
the hen.
Se fue el hombre con su gallina y estuvo andando todo el día y al final del día se
acercó a otra casa a pedir refugio.
The man went away with his hen and walked all day and at the end of the day he
approached another house to ask for shelter.
Antes de ir a dormir preguntó dónde podía poner la gallina y le dijeron que la
llevase al corral.
Before going to sleep, he asked where he could put the hen and they told him to
take it to the yard.
Y a la mañana siguiente, cuando fue a buscar la gallina vio que no aparecía. Se
ponen a rebuscar y descubren que se la ha comido la cerda. Y el pobre va y dice:
The following morning, when he went to fetch the hen, he saw that it was gone.
They started to look for it and discovered that the pig had eaten it. The poor man
said :
-
Pues si no me da usted la gallina, me da la cerda que se la comió.
-
Well if you can’t give me the hen, give me the pig which ate it.
Los de la casa no querían darle la cerda, pero al final no tuvieron más remedio que
entregársela. Y el mendigo, muy contento, se fue con su cerda.
The people in the house did not want to give him the pig, but finally there was
nothing for it but to hand it over. The beggar went off with his pig, very happy.
Como ya había cogido la costumbre, al caer la tarde del día siguiente volvió a pedir
posada y pidió guardar la cerda. La metieron en la cuadra y se fue a dormir.
And as it was now his custom, as night fell on the following day, he went to ask
for lodging and asked them to look after his pig. They put it in the stable and he
went to sleep.
Y otra vez la misma historia: al levantarse vio que la cerda estaba muerta en la
cuadra y preguntó la causa y le dijeron en la casa que la había matado la vaca en un
descuido. Y el pobre hizo lo que las otras veces:
Once again, the same story. When he got up, he saw that the pig was dead in the
stable and asked the reason and they told him that the cow had killed it
carelessly. The poor man did the same as before:
-
Pues si no me da usted la cerda, me da la vaca que la mató.
-
Well if you can’t give me the pig, give me the cow which killed it.
Así que se fue con la vaca cada vez más animado con su suerte, y llegó a otro
lugar donde pidió que le dejasen pasar la noche.
So he went off with the cow increasingly cheered up by his good fortune, and he
arrived at another place where he asked them to let him spend the night.
En esta casa había gran movimiento porque al día siguiente se casaba una hija de
los dueños, de manera que lo invitaron a que se quedase y el mendigo dijo que sí.
In this house there was a lot of commotion because one of the daughters of the
owners was going to get married so that they invited him to stay and the beggar
said yes.
Guardaron la vaca en la cuadra y estuvo los tres días siguientes celebrando las
bodas, que fueron magníficas. Y al término de los festejos, bien comido y
descansado, pidió su vaca para irse. Y le dijeron:
They put the cow in the stable and spent the following three days celebrating the
wedding which was magnificent. When the celebrations finished and all were
well fed and rested, he asked for his cow to be on his way, and they said :
-
¡Ay, pero si hemos matado la vaca para la boda!
-
But we have killed the cow for the wedding!
El mendigo se enfadó y gritó:
The beggar got angry and shouted:
− Pues si no me dan ustedes la vaca, me dan la novia.
− Well if you can’t give me the cow, give me the bride.
Ellos no querían, pero el hombre se puso tan pesado que al final no tuvieron más
remedio que darle la novia.
They did not want to but the man got so annoying that there was nothing for it
but to give them the bride.
Al igual que las otras veces la metió en su saco, se lo echó a la espalda y se fue a
buscar otra casa pensando en lo mucho que ganaba con cada cambio.
Just like the other times, he put her in his sack, threw it over his shoulder and
went off to look for another house thinking of how much better off he was at
each exchange.
Y por allí encontró otra casa donde le daban posada y preguntó:
He found another house where they gave him lodging and he asked:
− ¿Dónde puedo dejar este saco?
− Where can I leave this sack?
-
Pues aquí mismo, en un rincón de la cocina –le dijeron.
-
Well here in the corner of the kitchen they said.
Entonces el pobre se fue a pedir a otras casas que estaban cerca y dejó allí el
saco.
Then the man went begging to other houses nearby and he left the bag there.
Pero resulta que aquella casa era donde vivían los padrinos de la chica. En esto que
se pusieron a amasar tortas y los chicos de la casa empezaron a cantar:
But it turned out that the godparents of the girl lived in that house. When the
began to prepare cakes, the children of the house began to sing:
-
Madre, hágame una torta.
-
Mother, make me a cake
Y entonces sale una voz del saco que dice:
And then a voice came from the sack which said:
− Madrina, hágame a mí otra.
− Godmother, make me another
Todos se quedaron extrañados y fueron a ver qué había dentro del saco y allí se
encontraron a la novia metida.
They were all amazed and went to see what was in the sack and there they found
the bride inside.
La sacaron de allí y en su lugar metieron lagartos y culebras.
They took her out and in her place put lizards and snakes
Y a la mañana siguiente el pobre cogió su saco, que estaba donde lo había dejado,
y sin decir palabra se fue de la casa.
The following morning the poor man took his sack which was where he had left
it , and without saying a word, left the house.
Y cuando iba por el camino, se le empezaron a revolver todos los bichos que
llevaba dentro y al abrirlo para ver lo que era se dio tal susto que se quedó muerto.
As he was walking along the road, all the creatures in the sack began to squirm
around and when he opened it to see what it was, it give him such a fright that
he dropped down dead.
Eso fue lo que le pasó al mendigo por avaro y aprovechado.
That is what happened to the greedy, selfish beggar.
