TO JERUSALEM
CLIMBING THE
MOUNTAIN OF LOVE
The Gospel of St. Luke shares with
us Jesus‘ conversation with those who
accompany Him to Jerusalem. He
asks us to ―Listen! I am going to cast
out demons and to perform cures
today and tomorrow. The next day I
will be on my way because it is
impossible for a prophet to be killed
outside of Jerusalem.‖
Jesus knows that some cities and
corporate structures are not health or
life affirming. But we do not yield to
pessimism because our melody (Psalm
27) proclaims ―Lord, you are my light
and my salvation whom shall I fear?‖
PRAYER FOR THE
SECOND WEEK OF LENT
O Christ, you willingly set your
course to Jerusalem, and you
faced death on the cross that we
might live. Grant us faith to use
this new gift of life to do your
work of healing the sick and
feeding the hungry. Amen.
Jesus invites his disciples to climb
up steep Mt. Tabor and once on top
the blazing sunset transfigures Jesus
as heavenly figures assure Him that
death is a bridge back to paradise.
God the Father drives out the apostles
chatty fears by saying, ―Listen!—to
Jesus my beloved Son.‖
In this nuclear age Jesus still invites
us to climb the Mountain of Love. Fr.
Thomas Merton, the famous monkauthor of Gethsemane, Kentucky,
Trappist Monastery one day walked to
the hill of St. Joseph and admitted
―Here I am climbing the mountain of
love and I don‘t know where the hell
I‘m going!‖
The journey can get exasperating. So
begin each day of Lent in God‘s
Presence. Listen to the ancients and
to Jesus as God asks of us. Then our
souls will be nourished to continue
making peace in this world with the
assurance of seeing God.

day. That‘s the amount that 1/3 of the
world‘s population lives on every day.
Or find some friends to contribute
$2.00 a day for 40 days and contribute
this $80.00 per person to help our
food outreach programs at Ste. Anne‘s

SOBRE LA
MUERTE
En la Transfiguración, Jesús trae
para avalar su palabra de triunfo y de
vida a los profetas y a Moisés. ¿Qué
es lo que promete? El triunfo final
sobre la muerte, su gloria; pero
primero, hay que pasar por el dolor y
la muerte. Esta promesa de Jesús no
es sólo para que todos estemos
seguros de que va a ganar, sino para
que todos podamos aceptar el dolor y
la muerte que acompaña a los
discípulos. Es una promesa en la que
Jesús participa, pero con sus
seguidores.
Podemos aceptar el
dolor, la persecución y las
dificultades de la vida con confianza,
esperanza y total seguridad. Jesús ha
dado su palabra y la ha avalado con
la presencia de Moisés y Elías, y con
su Transfiguración; por tanto, no nos

An informational meeting for

Nightfever: Detroit will be held at
Sacred Heart Major Seminary from
7 to 8:30 p.m. this Wednesday,
March 2. The Nightfever initiative
grew out of World Youth Day 2005
in Cologne, and continues to
spread across Europe and North
America. Nightfever combines
adoration, reconciliation, prayer,
beautiful music, and an opportunity
to bring new people into the
Church. At last year’s Nightfever:
Detroit at Old St. Mary’s Parish in
Greektown, volunteers took to the
streets of Detroit and invited
people to go into the church to
light a candle, say a prayer, or
speak with a priest. Nightfever:
Detroit is coordinated through the
Office for Young Adult and
Campus Ministry, and is funded in
part by your gifts to the Catholic
Services

Deacon Chris…
If you put an ice cube in a glass of water, what
does it do? It floats. What is so unusual about
that?
I use to teach chemistry in high school
and community college and one of our topics
would be water. We would study its structure,
properties, etc. We would also talk about one
of the properties of water; that is, when it
freezes it expands.
If you have ever
experienced frozen and broken water pipes you know that
well. Water expanding when it freezes is contrary to the
laws of science; it is supposed to contract.
All other
gases and liquids contract when they freeze; water is the
exception! We would discuss the scientific reasons why
water expands when it freezes, but then I would ask the
class – ‗Why does our life, and survival on this planet,
depend upon water expanding when it freezes?‘
We
would go back and forth then I would add -- What would
happen if water contracted when it was frozen? What
would happen to our lakes and oceans? Ice would form,
and because it would be heavier than the liquid form of
water, it would sink to bottom. Soon the whole ocean
would be a block of ice. The sun couldn‘t penetrate to
warm it, and life, as we know it, would never have begun.
We can look upon water expanding when it freezes, the
ice cube floating in a glass of water, as a quirk of nature,
or maybe there is something else?
All of us taste God though different experiences in our
live. Sometimes it can be looking at a clear nighttime
sky or holding a new born child. All these experiences
ultimately imprint us with the belief that the universe
makes sense and that we have reason to love and trust,
that there is world beyond this one and that God is there.
Prayer, fasting and almsgiving become our mantra of
Lent. Prayer can take many forms. Sometimes a prayer
can be a reflection on where have we experienced God in
our lives. I can‘t remember exactly what I said in the
classroom when discussing water expanding when it
freezes, and how our existence depended upon it. More
than likely, I said this was not a fluke of nature, or a
chance phenomenon, it was all part of a divine design.
This Lent reflect on -- Where have you seen the evidence
of God in your life?

Si pones un cubo de hielo en un vaso de
agua, que es lo que hace? Flota. Qué es tan
inusual de eso? Yo enseñaba química en la
escuela secundaria y Colegio de la comunidad
y uno de nuestros temas era el agua.
Estudiamos su estructura, propiedades, etc.
También hablamos de una de las propiedades
del agua, eso es cuando, cuando se congela se
expande. Si usted alguna vez ha experimentado tuberías
de agua congeladas y rotas lo conoce bien. Expansión
cuando se congela el agua es contrario a las leyes de la
ciencia, tenia que contractarse. Otros gases y líquidos
contraen cuando se congelan; el agua es la excepción!
Discutimos las razones científicas por qué el agua se
expande cuando se congeal? Vamos hacia adelante y
hacia atrás y luego agrego - qué pasaría si agua contrajo
cuando estaba congelado? Qué pasaría con nuestros lagos
y océanos? Hielo se formaria, y por eso sería más pesado
que la forma líquida del agua, se hundiría al fondo.
Pronto el océano entero sería un bloque de hielo. El sol
no podría penetrar para calentarlo, y la vida como lo
conocemos , nunca hubiese comenzado. Podemos mirar al
agua cuando se congela en expansion, el cubo de hielo
flota en un vaso de agua, como un capricho de la
naturaleza, o tal vez hay algo más?
Todo probamos a Dios en diferentes experiencias en
nuestras vidas a veces puede ser mirando a un cielo claro
durante la noche, o sosteiendo a un niño recién nacido.
Todas estas experiencias nos impresiónan en última
instancia con la creencia de que el universo tiene sentido
y que tenemos motivos para amar y confiar, que hay
mundo más allá de este y que Dios está allí.
Oracion, el ayuno y la limosna se convierte en nuestro
lema de la Cuaresma. Oración puede tomar muchas
formas. A veces una oración puede ser una reflexión en
donde hemos experimentado a Dios en nuestras vidas.
No puedo recordar exactamente lo que dije en el aula
cuando hable de la expansión en agua cuando se congeal,
y cómo nuestra existencia dependía de él. Más que
probable que, Dije que esto no fue una casualidad de la
naturaleza, o un fenómeno de oportunidad, era parte de un
diseño divino. Esta Cuaresma reflexionar sobre, donde
has visto la evidencia de Dios en tu vida?

Bluefield, WVA. As a Glenmary Missioner I came
for confessions, Mass and like the 12 Apostles we
gather round a battered mess-hall table. Let us
all follow Jesus eager to love going out to the
margins with suffering immigrants, the lepers,
the homeless, the excluded. Let us listen with
the heart, journeying together. As we encounter
this “ocean of Mercy” the Spirit will transform
