THE VIRTUES
After two weeks away from the parish it feels good to be back home.
I share with you that since September 8 we have resumed the practice of the Holy Hour for Vocations. Sometimes, we will celebrate Mass before. But that will happen only when there is a major
holiday or day of solemnity. Moreover, in the coming weeks in this space, I will briefly explain the human and spiritual
virtues.
The Catechism of the Church #1803 tells us that "virtue is a habitual and firm disposition to do good. It allows the
person not only to perform good acts, but to give the best of himself/herself ..." The virtues are grouped as follows:
Cardinal Virtues and Spiritual Virtues. They are called Cardinal Virtues because they hold the moral life of man.
Human virtues are: Prudence, Justice, Fortitude and Temperance.
PRUDENCE. This virtue includes three elements: thinking maturely, decide wisely and execution. "The cautious man
ponders his steps" (Pr 14, 15). "Be sensible and sober to give oneself in prayer" (1 Peter 4: 7).
JUSTICE. This virtue is infused by God into the will to give to others what belongs to them. This virtue includes our
relationship with God, with others and with society. Justice is necessary to bring order, peace, welfare and
truthfulness in all. "Being a judge not do injustice, nor partial to the poor or defer to the great, you judge your
neighbor" (Lev 19, 15).
STRENGTH. This virtue is the soul that gives strength to run after the “right” that is difficult, without stopping for
fear, even the fear of death. This also moderates the audacity to not lead to folly. It disposes one even to renounce and
sacrifice one's life to defend a just cause. "In the world you have tribulation. But take heart !: I have overcome the
world "(Jn 16: 33).
TEMPERANCE. This virtue moderates the inclination to satisfy the pleasures of food, drink and touch. Temperance is
often praised in the Old Testament: "Do not follow your passions, restrain your desires" (If 18, 30). It is important to
know these aspects of our faith. Let's review these aspects in our lives so that next week when it is discussed we can
understand the relationship between one and the other.
LAS VIRTUDES
Después de dos semanas fuera de la parroquia es bueno regresar a casa.
Quiero compartir con ustedes que desde el 8 de septiembre hemos retomado la práctica de la Hora Santa. Algunas
veces, celebraremos la Santa Misa antes. Pero eso pasará solamente cuando haya una fiesta importante o alguna solemnidad. Por otra parte, en las próximas semanas en este espacio, brevemente explicaré las Virtudes Humanas y Espirituales.
El Catecismo de la Iglesia en el #1803 nos dice que "la virtud es una disposición habitual y firme a hacer el bien. Permite a la persona no sólo realizar actos buenos, sino dar lo mejor de sí misma…" Las virtudes están agrupas de la siguiente manera: Virtudes Cardinales y Virtudes Espirituales. Se llaman Virtudes Cardinales porque sostienen la vida
moral del hombre. Las virtudes humanas son: La Prudencia, La Justicia, La Fortaleza y La Templanza.
LA PRUDENCIA. Esta virtud abarca tres elementos: pensar con madurez, decidir con sabiduría y ejecutar bien. “El
hombre cauto medita sus pasos” (Pr 14, 15). “Sean sensatos y sobrios para darse a la oración” (1 P 4, 7).
LA JUSTICIA. Esta virtud es infundida por Dios en la voluntad para que demos a los demás lo que les pertenece y les
es debido. Esta virtud abarca nuestras relaciones con Dios, con el prójimo y con la sociedad. La justicia es necesaria
para poner orden, paz, bienestar y veracidad en todo. “Siendo juez no hagas injusticia, ni por favor del pobre, ni por
respeto al grande: con justicia juzgarás a tu prójimo” (Lv 19, 15).
LA FORTALEZA. Esta virtud es la que da fuerza al alma para correr tras el bien difícil, sin detenerse por miedo, ni
siquiera por el temor de la muerte. También modera la audacia para que no desemboque en insensatez. Capacita para
ir hasta la renuncia y el sacrificio de la propia vida por defender una causa justa. “En el mundo tendrán tribulación.
Pero ¡ánimo!: Yo he vencido al mundo” (Jn 16, 33).
LA TEMPLANZA. Esta virtud modera la inclinación a satisfacer los placeres sensibles de la comida, bebida y el tacto.
La templanza es a menudo alabada en el Antiguo Testamento: “No vayas detrás de tus pasiones, tus deseos refrena” (Si 18, 30). Es importante conocer estos aspectos de nuestra fe. Revisemos estos aspectos en nuestra vida para
que la próxima semana al hablar de las virtudes teologales podamos entender la relación que existe entre unas y las
otras.

Mercy is one thing, malpractice quite another. Why, then, does the defrauded master in Jesus’ parable praise the devious steward? Jesus
shows by example how to sanctify material goods: by placing all our resources, indeed our very selves, at the service of others. No matter
how costly such service, or how minimal the return, such charity is the wisest investment, yielding a reward that is literally out of this world.
For Amos and Jesus, authentic worship of God demands practical charity toward our neighbor. Paul, too, declares that the only worship acceptable to God is offered by a community rich in charity. Liturgy must be matched to life, “lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument” (1 Timothy 2:8). This Jubilee Year of Mercy challenges us to live as “children of light,” as devoted to self-sacrificing service as “the
children of this world” (Luke 16:8) are to serving themselves, as enthusiastic for God’s kingdom of justice as we are about less-enduring
treasures.
La misericordia es una cosa y la negligencia otra muy diferente. ¿Por qué, entonces, el patrón robado en la parábola de Jesús reconoce a
su trabajador hábil en los negocios? Jesús muestra con un ejemplo cómo santificar los bienes materiales: poniendo todos nuestros recursos,

Jesús, la verdadera adoración a Dios exige obras de caridad útiles hacia nuestro prójimo. Pablo también expresa que la única adoración aceptable a Dios es la que se ofrece por una comunidad rica en caridad. La liturgia debe relacionarse con la vida “levantando al cielo sus manos
puras, libre de odios y divisiones” (1 Timoteo 2:8). Este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia nos desafía a vivir como
“hijos de la luz” —con dedicado servicio abnegado— tan entusiasmados por el Reino de Dios de justicia pero
menos por los tesoros pasajeros; así como los “hijos de este mundo” se sirven a ellos mismos (Lucas 16:8).
