Four ways to avoid discouragement
Get involved
Catholics have a long history of

‘clearly the mother of the
members of Christ’”
(CCC, 963). When Mary
and St. John were at the
foot of his Cross, Jesus
said to her, “’Woman,
behold your son.’ He
then said to John,
‘Behold your mother’” (John
19:26). So saying, Jesus gave
Mary to us as our mother.
Through her special
relationships with her son,
Mary is in a great position to
advocate for our needs and
concerns. She is our best
intercessor.

Dress for Mass
The best way to dress for Mass is to put on a reverent
attitude. You can do this by arriving a few minutes
early to go over the readings so you can really
absorb their message.
The next thing you can wear to church is a
smile. That will give others the feeling that
you're happy to be there and happy to see
them, too. And of course you'll want to
don your best singing voice so you can
sing with gusto (regardless of ability) and
really participate in the Mass.
Perhaps you'll want to accessorize by tucking a
small notepad in your purse or pocket. You can
use it to jot down prayer requests,
intercessions, or thoughts from the
homily to review later. That will help
you live the Mass all week long.
Finally, as a good rule of thumb for
clothing, avoid outfits you wear to
the gym, to play a sport, or to work
in the yard – even on vacation. If in
doubt, ask your pastor.
Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48;

In this passage, the disciples were
jealous of a man who was healing in
Jesus’ name. It seems as if they were
afraid of losing the spotlight.
Jesus made two important
points in response:

belief in Christ, we must

give up our own Catholicism but we do
have to respect the entire Body of Christ.

followers. What we sacrifice may even be

expects us to be wholehearted in our love for
him. If there is something we prize but it
keeps us from Christ,
we must give it up.

toward God. In truth, there are no
sacrifices too great to get rid of things
that keep us from following God. Love
of Jesus is what matters.
August 15 - Assumption of the
Blessed Virgin Mary. Declared a
dogma of our faith in 1950 by Pope
Pius XII, the Assumption celebrates
Mary being taken up into Heaven
body and soul at the end of her life. It
is a Holy Day of Obligation requiring
Mass attendace.
August 19 – St. John Eudes (1680).
Born on a farm in France, John was a
priest and missionary. St. John is best
known for promoting the devotion to
the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the
Immaculate Heart of Mary. He
founded the Congregation of Jesus
and Mary (Eudists).
August 22 – The Queenship of the
Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1954, Pope
Pius XII established this feast day to
celebrate the Coronation of Mary as
Queen of Heaven and Earth. Mary’s
queenship is rooted in scripture and
tradition. As the mother of the King,
Mary can intercede for us in Heaven.
Because of her
faithfulness
to her Son
and his
mission,
Mary is
exalted
above
even the
angels.
Why do we speak of
God as Father, Son
and Holy Spirit?
Knowledge of three persons in one
God – the Triune God - is what we call,
“a revealed truth.” The Triune God is
the core of our belief as Christians.
Knowledge of a single
god was revealed to the
Hebrews. Until then,
all peoples had a
multitude of gods they
worshiped for different
purposes.
The Old Testament
made many references
to the Messiah and to
the Spirit of God. For
example, God said, “Let us make man in
our image, after our likeness…”
(Genesis 1:26).
Still no one was able to tie all those
references into a triune god. That came
from the revelations of Jesus Christ. His
entire public ministry pointed to him
being divine. He also referred to
himself as the Son of God. His miracles
reinforced his claim. Jesus said, “And I
will pray to the Father, and he will give you
another Paraclete, to be with you forever,
even the Spirit of truth…”(John
14:16-17). Since God told us of Father,
Son and Spirit, we accept it in faith.

Si piensa que usted no peca y
que no necesita el sacramento

camine—hacia el confesionario
más cercano. “Si decimos: ‘No
tenemos pecado’, nos engañamos”
(1 Juan 1:8). Los pecados sin
confesar, especialmente los que

asistir a misa varias veces por semana. Rece
por la paz. Y las gracias que recibirá le darán
fuerza para hacer frente a los desafíos

Rezar el rosario. Es imposible temer
mientras se medita sobre la vida, el
sacrificio y la gloria de quien más nos ama.
Y es un arma eficaz contra el mal dentro y
fuera de nosotros.

Es deprimente leer sin cesar
sobre los escándalos, la
violencia y la
miseria, pero eso
es lo que
traen las
noticias
porque es fácil
conseguir esas
historias. Procure evitar
las noticias y pasar su tiempo,
en cambio, leyendo las Escrituras o
libros edificantes que le darán ánimo.
No sea un simple banco en la iglesia.
Su parroquia ofrece ayuda y esperanza de
verdad a muchas personas necesitadas de
su comunidad. Participe en esos esfuerzos
y colabore en el cambio. Pregúntele a su
párroco o al personal de la parroquia
cómo puede ayudar.
“La Virgen María… es
verdaderamente la madre
de los miembros de Cristo”
(CIC 963). Cuando María
y san Juan estaban a los
pies de la Cruz, Jesús
dijo: “’Mujer, ahí tienes a
tu hijo.’ Luego dice al
discípulo: ‘Ahí tienes a tu
madre’ (Juan 19:26-27). Al decir
esto, Jesús nos dio a María como
madre.
Mediante su especial relación
con su hijo, María está en una
posición privilegiada para
interceder por nuestras
necesidades y preocupaciones.

¿Cuál es la mejor forma de vestirse para la misa?
La mejor manera de vestirse para la misa es mostrar una
actitud reverente. Puede conseguir esto llegando unos
minutos antes para repasar las lecturas de modo que
pueda realmente absorber su mensaje.
Lo siguiente que puede llevar a la iglesia es una
sonrisa. La gente verá que usted está feliz de estar
allí y feliz de verlos a ellos. Y por supuesto,
también querrá llevar su mejor voz par poder
cantar con gusto (al margen de su habilidad)
y participar de verdad en la misa.
Tal vez quiera adornar su atuendo con una
libreta pequeña en su bolso o bolsillo. Puede usarla para
anotar peticiones especiales, intercesiones o
pensamientos de la homilía y repasarlos
después. Así vivirá la misa durante toda la
semana. Finalmente, una norma básica para
la vestimenta es evitar ropas que se
pondría para ir al gimnasio, la playa,
para practicar un deporte o para
trabajar en el jardín, aunque esté de
vacaciones. Si tiene alguna duda,
pregunte a su párroco.
Marcos 9:38-43, 45, 47-48:
Nada merece perder el cielo
En este pasaje los discípulos sienten celos
de un hombre que curaba en nombre
de Jesús. Parece como si no
quisieran dejar de ser el centro
de atención. La respuesta de
Jesús dejó estas dos cosas
claras:
Cuando alguien expresa
que cree en Cristo
debemos respetar esa
creencia independientemente de la denominación cristiana a la
que pertenezca esa
persona. Lo que
importa es confesar la
verdad de Jesús. No tenemos que
abandonar nuestro catolicismo pero
debemos respetar a todo el Cuerpo de
Cristo.
15 de agosto – Asunción de la Bendita
Virgen María. Declarado dogma de fe en
1950 por el papa Pío XII, la Asunción
celebra que María fue llevada al cielo en
cuerpo y alma al final de su vida. Es un día
de precepto que requiere asistir a misa.
19 de agosto – San Juan Eudes (1680).
Nacido en una granja en Francia, Juan fue
sacerdote y misionero. San Juan es
conocido principalmente por promover la
devoción al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús y al
Inmaculado Corazón de María. Fundó la
Congregación de Jesús y María (eudistas).
22 de agosto – Santa María Virgen,
En segundo lugar, Jesús pide
sacrificios a todos sus
seguidores. Lo que
sacrificamos puede
incluso ser algo que
apreciamos. Jesús
espera que le demos
nuestro amor sin
reservas. Si hay algo que
valoramos pero que nos
aleja de Cristo, debemos
rechazarlo. El orgullo y la
autocomplacencia son los
obstáculos mayores para seguir
por completo a Jesús y Él ilustró con
contundencia cómo seguir el camino
correcto hacia Dios. Lo cierto es que no
hay sacrificio demasiado grande para
librarnos de cosas que nos impiden seguir
a Dios. Lo que importa es el amor a Jesús.
Reina. En 1954, el papa Pío XII estableció
esta fiesta para celebrar la coronación de
María como Reina del Cielo y de la Tierra.
La realeza de María tiene sus raíces en la
escritura y en la tradición. Como madre
del Rey, María puede interceder por
nosotros en el Cielo. Por su fe en su Hijo y
en su misión, María es exaltada incluso
por
encima
de los
ángeles.
¿Por qué hablamos de
Dios como Padre, Hijo
y Espíritu Santo?
El conocimiento de tres personas en un
solo Dios—el Dios trino y uno—es lo que
llamamos “una verdad revelada”. El Dios
trino y uno es un factor clave de nuestra fe
cristiana. La
existencia de un
solo dios fue
revelada a los
hebreos. Hasta
entonces todos los
pueblos creían en
una multitud de
dioses a los que
rendían culto con
distintos
propósitos. El
Antiguo
Testamento hace
muchas referencias al Mesías y al Espíritu de
Dios. Por ejemplo, Dios dijo: “Hagamos al
hombre a nuestra imagen y semejanza”
(Génesis 1:26).
Pero nadie pudo relacionar esas
referencias con un dios trino y uno. Eso
llegó con la revelación de Jesucristo. Todo
su ministerio público indicaba su naturaleza
divina. Y Él mismo indicó que era el Hijo de
Dios. Sus milagros reforzaban esa
afirmación. Jesús dijo: “y yo pediré al Padre y
os dará otro Paráclito, para que esté con vosotros
para siempre, el Espíritu de la verdad…” (Juan
14: 16-17). Como Dios nos habló de Padre,
Hijo y Espíritu, lo aceptamos por la fe.
