The Liturgical Year comes to a close this Sunday with the
Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. All
people and all things belong to Christ. He alone must reign in
our hearts and in our world. Today, let us pray fervently, especially with the Our Father, that the kingdom of the Lord will be
more fully expressed in our lives and in our Parish. Next Sunday, is the First Sunday of Advent, the beginning of the new Liturgical Year. Advent, which often passes so quickly, gives us
four weeks to prepare for the coming of Christ with the celebration of his Birth at Christmas, in history, at the end of time, and
more immediately into our lives. As we embrace the Advent
coming of the Lord, we are strengthened in our resolve to be active members of the Kingdom of Christ.
Our Parish Mission begins next Sunday, November 27, 2016
and will continue through Thursday, December 1, 2016. Our
Parish Mission also includes our Parish Forty Hours. The complete schedule for the Parish Mission and the Forty Hours is outlined on the insert in this Parish Bulletin. Participation in the
Parish Mission is a wonderful way to begin Advent. If anyone
needs a ride to any of the Parish Mission services, please call the
Rectory Office. The Parish Mission is open to all.
During Advent, there will be additional opportunities for the
Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. On Tuesday of the
Mission, November 29, 2016, the evening Mission Service will
include an opportunity for Confessions. Each Sunday of Advent,
Confessions will be heard at 9:00 AM, 10:30 AM and at 5:30 PM
before the Sunday Masses. During the first few weeks of Advent, the weekday Confession schedule is as usual, Monday
through Friday at 11:30 AM and Saturday at 4:15 PM. All Confessions are heard in the Basilica. Each week of A dvent, prior to
the 5:15 PM Anticipated Mass on Saturday, beginning at 5:00
PM, there will be an organ recital of sacred music of Advent.
This Thursday, November 24, 2017, is Thanksgiving Day.
Mass will be celebrated on Thanksgiving Day and on Friday,
November 25, 2017, at 9:00 AM in the Cathedral Chapel. On
both days, the Basilica and the Parish Office are closed. Following Mass on Thanksgiving morning, we will pray the Holy Rosary at the Queen of Apostles Garden behind the Basilica.
The second collection at Mass next Sunday will be directed
to supplement costs associated with parish maintenance. Thank
you so very much for all of your goodness and generosity to the
Cathedral Parish, especially with the Parish Fall Collection and
to the Catholic Charities A ppeal.

Communion for the Sick
The priests of the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul are
anxious to serve the spiritual needs of their Catholic brothers and sisters who live in Residences such as Atria, Kennedy House, Penn Center House, Riverside Presbyterian, and Watermark. Ther efore, if you ar e awar e of anyone who would like a priest to visit and celebrate the Sacrament of Penance, the Sacrament of the Sick, and Holy
Communion, please let us know. There is no better way that
we can emulate Jesus Christ than by sharing his love with
all whom he places in our paths, especially the sick and the
aged who long for his healing presence.

The Sanctuary Lamp Candle burns
this week in the Cathedral Basilica

Donations are accepted for intentions for the Sanctuary
Lamp in the Basilica and the Cathedral Chapel. This candle
burns perpetually as a reminder that Jesus is truly and really
present in the tabernacle. If you wish to make the suggested donation of fifteen dollars for an intention for a Sanctuary Lamp, you may contact the Parish Office directly or
place your intention and offering in the collection basket.

Cathedral Choir Schedule
The Cathedral Choir regularly sings at the
11:00 AM Sunday Solemn Mass, however, one
Sunday a month they sing at the 9:30 AM Mass instead.
As of today, the Choir is scheduled to sing at the 9:30
AM Mass on November 20, December 18, 2016 and
January 22, 2017. We will continue to post upcoming
dates in the bulletin.

VIVIENDO LA CORRESPONSABILIDAD
La Promesa del Paraíso
La monarquía tiene muy poco significado para nosotros en los Estados Unidos. La historia atestigua y muchos recordarán, que los fundadores de esta nación lucharon por derribar una opresión de la cual era parte la monarquía. Hoy en día tal vez nos guste ver toda la pompa y
el ceremonial de la realeza moderna, pero de lejos. Los
ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos tienen derechos y uno
de esos derechos es la libre elección de sus propios líderes para ocupar puestos políticos, lo cual conlleva ejercer
una autoridad. Si no estamos de acuerdo con los que están en el poder podemos votar en las próximas elecciones
para remplazarlos. La autoridad se la confiere el pueblo a
unos pocos y nadie en nuestro sistema político se mantiene en el poder permanentemente.
El reino de Dios tiene una dimensión completamente
diferente y las cosas no se disponen igual. Hoy honramos
a Cristo como nuestro Rey, el ungido de Dios que reina
en nuestra vida y en nuestro corazón, si nos disponemos
a recibirlo. El Hijo de Dios se hizo humano para que los
seres humanos pudieran experimentar el reino de Dios de
una manera personal y directa. Jesús tenía el poder de
perdonar a los pecadores, curar a los enfermos y aun resucitar a los muertos; pero Cristo no poseía la parafernalia o símbolos de éxito y poder de esta vida terrena ni le
impone sus mandamientos a nadie. Todos estamos libres
de aceptar o de rechazar, como lo hizo Judas al final.
Aun cuando Jesús estaba en la cruz los que es-taban alrededor discutían acerca de su identidad. Los espectadores
se burlaban porque ese “rey” no tenía el poder para

salir pronto de su agonía; el otro reconoció la inocencia
de Jesús y también su reino futuro. Como respuesta a la
total fe y confianza de este hombre, Jesús le dice: “Yo te

We hope each of you are having a fantastic week so far.
In the month of November we focus on all of the things in
our life in which we are THANKFUL as we begin to prepare for the beautiful season of Advent.
As we reflect on aspects of our lives in which we are thankful, each of us are humbled and deeply thankful for the
Young Adults at the Cathedral.
As it notes in our mission statement above we are
"...committed to the Faith" as well as the growth of this
ministry.
In order to continue to serve each of you (in addition to
any friends you would like to bring) we are adjusting our
regular events. As we focus on a few new events - details to
soon follow, so stay tuned - we will be rotating Bible Study
off of the normal schedule of events for a while.
Therefore there will NOT be Bible Study for the remainder of the year.
A few "Save the Dates" to place on your calendar:
1) THIS Sunday and every 2nd Sunday of the Month moving forward - Rosary at 5:45 PM prior to the 6:30 PM Mass
- we will gather in the front right side of the Cathedral. We
hope you can join us.
2) The Parish Mission from Sunday, November 27 through
December 1, 2016. The Mission will also include our
Parish Forty Hours Devotion from Sunday through Tuesday. The Franciscans of the Renewal will provide for the
Parish Mission. More details to follow. Please now pray for
the spiritual renewal the Parish Mission promises!
3) First Friday with the Young Adults! Friday,
December 2nd at 7 PM in the Pastoral Center. This event
will be focus on preparing for Advent and include discussion, snacks, fellowship and prayer.

additional events and service opportunities! We are working
to get more details to the group in the coming weeks. If you

Promise of Paradise
Monarchy has very little meaning for us in the United
States. Historically, you may recall, it was a part of the
oppression that the founders of our nation fought to overthrow. Nowadays, we may perhaps enjoy watching the
pomp and pageantry of modern royalty as seen from afar.
We have rights as American citizens, and one of those
rights is the free election of leaders from among ourselves to political office and the authority that goes with
that office. If we do not agree with the actions of those in
power we can vote in the next election to replace them.
Authority is vested in the few by the many, and yet no
one has a permanent hold on power in our political system.
The reign of God is of another order and dimension
entirely. Today we honor Christ as our King, the anointed one of God who—if we accept him fully—has rule
over our hearts and lives. The Son of God became human
so that human beings could experience the reign of God
personally and directly. Jesus had the power to forgive
sinners, heal the sick, and even raise the dead, but Christ
has none of the earthly trappings of power and forces his
rule on no one. All are free to accept or to turn away, as
Judas ultimately did. Even as Jesus hung on the cross,
those around him still argued about his identity. Onlookers jeered because this “king” had no power to “save
himself.” Of the two criminals, one wanted a quick release from his agony; the other acknowledged the power
of Jesus’ innocence as well as his future rule. In response
to this man’s total faith and trust, Jesus said, “[T]oday
you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43). No earthly ruler can promise so much.
Living Stewardship Now
A prayer for this solemnity:
Almighty and merciful God,
you break the power of evil and make all things new
in your Son Jesus Christ, the King of the universe.
May all in heaven and earth
acclaim your glory
and never cease to praise you. Amen.
