2. USDA to purchase $4.5 million in fresh tomatoes, Packer
Daily
The U.S. Department of Agriculture plans to purchase $4.5 million in fresh tomatoes.
“This purchase will assist tomato growers who are struggling with challenging marketing
conditions caused by an oversupply of domestic tomatoes, international competition, and
declining prices” Edward Avalos, USDA under secretary of Marketing and Regulatory Programs
said in an April 4 e-mail. “The purchase will help mitigate further downward prices, stabilize
market conditions, and provide high-quality, nutritious food to recipients of USDA’s nutrition
programs.”

3. Demand for Florida tomatoes looks strong, Packer Daily
Florida grower-shippers expect strong demand for high-quality tomatoes as the deal moves
north.
Homestead, Fla.-based DiMare Co. expects to wind down its Homestead deal in mid-April and its
Immokalee, Fla., harvest a week later, said Tony DiMare, vice president.
Suspension agreement
DiMare said that as of early April, the effects of a new suspension agreement between Mexico
and the U.S., which raises the floor prices of Mexican tomatoes, has been minimal.
“I think it’s still too early to determine. I don’t know if it’s had much of an effect,” he said. “Look
at the market pre-suspension, it was a $12-14 market. Since then the market in Florida has come
down to $8-10.”

U.S. imports of Mexican fresh fruit totaled $2.86 billion in 2012, with the import value increasing
by an average of about 20% per year from 1999 to 2012. By comparison, the value of U.S.
