Els significats de l’art (The meanings of art), 2009
Compilation of any found material with the word "Art" but which doesn't refer to "Fine Art", the Classical Arts
or film.
Compilación de cualquier material encontrado que tenga la palabra “Arte” pero que no se refiera a lo que
entendemos por Bellas Artes, Artes clásicas o cine.

In the past, people distinguished between artisans and artists. Those people who learned a task
and that mastered techniques were good artisans. When the beauty of the results was obvious,
then they were considered artists.[...]
But the border between the artisan, those who learn techniques, and the artist, those who quickly
surpass the technique and contribute an added value, is a border that is not based on social
consensus.[...]
In fact, we are really talking about this, about consensus and conventions. We are talking about,
about ways of living art and ways of accepting it. It is not something that comes to us as a given
from some great beyond, nor is it a priori. In fact, it is a game. It is a game of acceptance, a game
of methods and, therefore, it is a game of tastes that chage throughout, throughout the years.
Even things that have been produced as purely utilitarian, afterwards have artistic value, right? [...]
The norms of art exist but are obsolete at the same time in which we employ them. Based on this
idea, the only thing we do is repeat. When we do something truly singular that is when we
transcend that traditional knowledge. One could say that the goal is to continually update the norms
of art, make them come alive and transform them because if not, they it doesn't work. [...]
The banality of the word art in these diverse fields makes it more accessible and less transcendent.
It is easier to grasp, not like when they present you with Art, with a capital 'A', where only a few are
the chosen ones. [...]
You can enter any, any... any art class based on your experience, and you don't imagine that you
should be different than the others for having entered, do you? You enter, one may say, through
the back door, without trauma, without... without the need to receive a special education directed
towards very special people.

En el pasado se distinguía entre los artesanos y los artistas. Aquellas personas que aprendían un
oficio y que dominaban las técnicas eran unos buenos artesanos. Cuando destacaban por la belleza
de los resultados entonces se los consideraba artistas. [...]
Pero la frontera entre el artesano, es decir, aquella persona que aprende unas técnicas, y el artista,
aquella que de pronto destaca por encima de estas técnicas y aporta un plus, es una frontera que
se da por consenso social. Que una cosa sea arte o no sea arte es una pura convención. [...]
En el fondo estamos hablando de esto, de consensos y de convenciones. Estamos hablando de,
de maneras de vivir el arte y de maneras de aceptarlo. No es algo que nos venga dado del más allá
o que o que sea apriorística. En el fondo es un juego. Es un juego de aceptaciones, es un juego de
modos, y por lo tanto es un juego de gustos que cambian a lo largo, a lo largo del tiempo. Incluso
cosas que han sido producidas como puramente utilitarias, después tienen un valor artístico, no?

Las normas del arte existen pero son obsoletas en el mismo momento que las empleamos. A partir
de aquí lo único que hacemos es repetición. Cuando hacemos algo ciertamente singular es cuando
trascendimos aquel aprendizaje tradicional. Diría que la gracia es actualizar continuamente las
normas del arte, hacerlas vivas y transformarlas porque es que si no, no funciona. [...]
La banalización de la palabra arte en estos diversos campos la hace más asequible y menos
trascendente. Más abastable, no como cuando te presentan aquel Arte en mayúscula, en qué sólo
unos cuantos son los escogidos. [...]
Tú puedes entrar a, a... a cualquier clase de arte a partir de tu experiencia, y no te planteas que
debas ser diferente de la otra gente por entrar, no? Entras, como si dijéramos, por la puerta
pequeña, sin traumatización, sin... sin necesidad de pasar por una educación especial dirigida a una
gente también muy especial.
