A Celebration of Life!
August 31/ September 1
Dear Parish Family,
Last summer one of the first groups to come and speak with me about the life of Sacred Hearts was
Mary Steinbrecher, Pat Corrigan, and Joan Heinz. They were excited about the possibility of renewing
a wonderful tradition at Sacred Hearts — the annual end of summer party. That event comes to reality
this weekend through their faith and generous work. At the time of our initial discussion, Mary was
doing very well in her battle against cancer and she was full of energy and life. I could sense in her a
depth of faith and wonderful passion for life and for seeing our church community come alive.
Just a couple of months later her disease progressed and she passed from us on October 30, 2012. I
visited her at home the week before and we had a chance to talk and pray. As a priest, I have had
many conversations with those who are sick and those near to dying and I always find their faith and
hope inspiring. But Mary was special. She was at peace but she was clearly unhappy that this life, this
wonderful life, was coming to a close for her. She wanted to see this event. She wanted more of the
love and life of her family. She wanted to be a part of everything that was happening in this church, in
this community, and in her family. She was clearly in love with life. Her life was truly a celebration
of life itself.
As we remember her this weekend, we honor both her generous work and her spirit. She is literally
one of those who built this community. Mary lived here all her life, attended Sacred Hearts School,
and celebrated all the important events of her life in this community. She wanted the best for her
parish and for her community, and she lived and worked to make that happen. Her spirit of love for
life is very much alive in the minds and hearts of all those who gather here this weekend.
Life is an amazing gift. It needs to be celebrated, embraced, and loved. We do that when we build
bridges of love and friendship among all the members of all our communities. Life is too short to
dwell on the things that divide us. We need to be grateful, especially for one another.
Thank you, Mary, for being our inspiration. May this weekend be A Celebration of Life!
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Rev. Michael A. Vetrano

Lourdes: Our journey will begin in Lourdes where we will visit the site of the appearance of Mary
to Saint Bernadette. We will have time to join in the evening candlelight processions, visit the
church of Bernadette's baptism and home of her birth, and of course many opportunities for prayer
and to visit the healing waters of Lourdes.
Paris: What would a trip to France be without some time in Paris! We will visit places both famous
and spiritual: The Eiffel tower, Basilica of the Sacred Heart, and Shrine to the Immaculate
Conception.
Lisieux: From Paris we will take a day excursion to the birthplace and church of St. Therese
Paray-Le-Monial: Included in our journey will be a overnight in this beautiful mountain town —
the place of the revelation of the Sacred Heart to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque.

Ministry of Praise for Life comes to SHJM
This fall we are beginning a ministry of praise for life. A ministry of praise is made up of parishioners
who agree to set aside some time each day to pray for an important cause. Here at SHJM our ministry
of praise will be dedicated to the many issues that our Church calls life issues. Life issues that affect
the humanity and dignity of every person but most especially those that Pope Francis speaks of as
being on the margins of our society: the unborn, the very old, the poor, those in struggling families,
those in prison. It is a wonderful ministry for people who are homebound and wish to use their time to
pray for others but it is a wonderful ministry for any person who can devote a few minutes a day to
prayer. We will be holding an enrollment for our ministry of praise members and each member will
receive a prayer book to use each day. If you are interested in joining this ministry, please send your
information to the parish office so we can contact you:

Faith and Health Care Decisions
What every Catholic needs to know
Faith Formation and Adult Education
Fr. Mike Vetrano
Modern medicine is both wonderful and
frighteningly complicated. Just 50 years ago
people were born and people died without much
to consider or decide about. Today things are
different. Many have already faced difficult
health care decisions for family members. We
wonder who will decide things for us if we
cannot make our own decisions. Many wonder
what a person of faith should think about life
support, artificial nutrition, organ donation, and
the care of the seriously ill.
This evening will explore the changes in medicine and the development of Catholic medical ethics.
This will be a practical evening, giving you the information you need to prepare for these decisions.
It will also be spiritual since the way we face these issues if often a profound encounter with our
faith, trust, and belief.
Career Planning Strategies Workshop — September 21
Have you considered changing your career or job or finding a new direction in your
life? Have you been adversely affected by the declining job market and are seeking
new employment? If you have recently been displaced from a position, you know
how difficult it can be to find new work. Going on an interview can be stressful and
sometimes terrifying. The landscape is competitive and changing quickly. Social
media can affect your job search.
This full day workshop will show you how to confidently plan, organize and succeed in your job search in a supportive environment. The program will meet on
Saturday, September 21, 2013 from 9:00am-4:00pm at The Basilica Parish of the
Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary Parish Center.
Career Planning Strategies Agenda
Getting started: creating an action plan and
portfolio of accomplishments
Resume writing: learn to write an effective
resume and other important preparation
How to brand yourself: the power of being
different
Job search strategies: finding a job is a full
time job
The program will be facilitated by Dr. Deborah B. Sorgi and
Robert V. Barcia. Dr. Sorgi is a sales, marketing, and
operations executive with general management and global
experience in educational publishing. She is an adjunct
professor, faculty mentor and in-service facilitator for an
online university where she teaches Strategies for Success
and Career Development. Mr. Barcia is a communications
strategist with 10+ years of experience in social media, public
relations, marketing, team development and brand messaging
in health and educational publishing.
Career development is an ongoing process. Indicate your interest today and get one step closer to personal and professional
fulfillment. Youth parishioners are invited to attend too! Call or Email Father Mike and tell him to reserve a spot just for
you! Seating is limited. Please RSVP by Friday, September 13th at [email protected] or 631-283-0097 x311. Bring
your own lunch!

APOSTOLADO HISPANO
escuchar”. Y tú, ¿estás escuchando al Señor hoy? Texto:

Sharing the Gospel
Most of the guests at a wedding party
are crowding around the bride and groom.
When the bride sees you sitting outside,
she says, "Come inside and drink some
punch." God will have a big feast at the
end of the world. When he sees you
standing outside the gates of heaven, he
will put his arm around you and say,
"Come right on in, my child. I've been
waiting for you."
Prayer
Lord, thank you for finding me when
others leave me out.
Something to Draw
Draw God walking into heaven with his
arm around you.
Mission for the Week
I will take a glass of water and a cookie
to my parents.
