READING THE FACE OF GOD XXII ‐ DISCERNMENT Why would God send desolations to us? Isn’t that against his nature, being “love” and all that? However, we know that God uses the raw material of our lives to lead us into his will. Perhaps he “permits” desolations, but I suppose the obvious question is why? Ignatius has three answers: [1] because we have been lazy and tepid in our faith; and God permits the desolation to move us to become more fervent. [2] God wants to test our resolve to follow him; to see if we are truly committed even in the face of desolation. [3] To give us true knowledge of ourselves. Unfortunately when we meet desolations in our lives we often assume that it is because we have displeased God, and he is punishing us. But think of this from the role of a teacher; sometimes students are unrealistic about their abilities; when a student is failing in school a word from the instructor might indicate that they should drop the course and preserve their record without a failing grade. Other students who are failing might feel that they can be successful if they persist, although the teacher may know otherwise. Sometimes we have to fail in order to see who we are and what we actually can accomplish. When the student fails and the teacher is not surprised, perhaps it may be a moment of enlightenment for the student. Perhaps desolations are a kind of test which helps us to come into contact with our limitations. IHM Pray for us. Pero nosotros sabemos que Dios usa su materia prima en nuestras vidas para llevarnos a su voluntad. Quien sabe porqué él “permite” desolaciones, pero la pregunta obvia es porqué? Ignacio tiene tres respuestas a las preguntas: 1) porqué hemos sido perezosos y templados en nuestra fé; y Dios permite la desolación que nos mueva a ser más fervientes. (2) Dios pone a prueba nuestra resolución para seguirlo; para ver si verdaderamente estamos cometidos aún en la cara de la desolación. (3) Para darnos verdadera sabiduria de nosotros. Desafortunadamente cuando nosotros encontramos desolaciones en nuestras vidas frecuentemente asumimos que es porqué hemos sido del desagrado de Dios y él nos está castigando. Pero piensen de esto en el lugar un(a) maestro(a); a veces estudiantes no son realistas sobre sus habilidades; cuando un estudiante está fallando en el colegio, una palabra del instructor puede indicar que ellos deberian dejar ese curso y preservar sus grados sin tener una materia sin pasar. Otros estudiantes quienes están fallando pueden sentir que tendrán suceso si persisten, aunque el maestro(a) lo sabe de otra manera. Cuando el estudiante falla y el maestro(a) no está sorprendido, quién sabe si seria un momento de alumbramiento para el estudiante. Quien sabe si desolaciones son como una prueba que nos ayudan a ponernos en contacto con nuestras limitaciones. IHM Ora por nosotros Padre Jerry
