Dear Parents,
At our November PTO meeting, Mrs. Emily Hadden presented to the audience the district and Thoreau’s resources
called Mondo which we use in our literacy block. One of the reasons MMSD selected the Mondo resources are due
to their inclusion of Oral Language as a component of literacy.
Today many of the books published on the teaching of reading have included at least one chapter on the links
between the way in which children learn to talk and in which they learn to read. The same conditions and attitudes
which nurture the acquisition of speech also foster the development of competence as children become readers.
Children learn to talk because they see and hear talk in action. They see how people use talk in their daily lives and
how talk enables them to get what they want, and to enjoy being with others.
Children learn to read in the same way. They learn to read by:
- seeing and hearing others read
- listening to others read to them
- reading with others
- reading by themselves and to others
Children become motivated to read when they become aware of people reading and responding to print. They want
their own messages from labels, notices, books and signs. In addition, children will also be motivated to read with
continued encouragement and support.
Providing many different resources for reading (books, magazines, newspapers, short articles, labels etc.) will spur
your children to continue reading and this continued reading will help improve your children’s reading at school.

Volunteer Identification
In an effort to streamline identifying volunteers in the building, we start using new badges after winter break. In the
past, we have used the district photo IDs, but found the process inconsistent and inefficient.
Following winter break, volunteers will need to sign in and out in the visitor log located in the office. It is very
important that we know who is in the building in the event of an emergency. There will be district volunteer badges
available for you to wear. Schools of Hope volunteers will have their own badges, also available in the office.

Estimados Padres y Madres de familia,
Durante la reunión del PTO de noviembre Mrs Emily Hadden hizo una presentación de los recursos del programa de
lectura Mondo que usamos en todas las escuelas de Madison. Una de las razones para cuales usamos ese programa
es su inclusión de recursos para apoyar lenguaje oral durante instrucción de la lectoescritura.
Los que escriben libros explicando métodos que podemos usar para enseñar la lectura siempre incluyen a lo menos un
capitulo con información de estudios explicando la relación entre como se habla y como se aprende leer. Tiene
sentido que no se puede leer bien palabras que no comprende. También hay conexión entre como se aprende hablar y
leer. Los niños aprenden hablar por escuchar a los que hablan igual como aprenden leer cuando escuchan y ven a
otros que leen.
Los niños aprenden leer por:
- observar cuando otros leen
- escuchar cuentos leídos por otros
- leer con otros
- leer solos o leer mientras que alguien los escuche
Los niños empiezan a aprender de lectura y querer aprender hacerlo cuando ven a otros usando la lectura. Ven que
texto tiene mensajes y quieren saber lo que dicen etiquetas, notas, libros y más. Para que tengan ganas de leer tienen
que aprender de la importancia de lectura y deben de verlo como algo que puede ser divertido.
Para asegurar que sus hijos tengan interés en la lectura es importante que tengan acceso a muchos materiales como
libros, periódicos, revistas… Se puede llevar materiales de la escuela de la escuela, buscar recursos en la biblioteca
pública o comprar cosas para sus hijos.

Identificación de voluntarios
Para simplificar el proceso de voluntarios que entran a nuestra escuela vamos a empezar con un nuevo sistema
después de las vacaciones del invierno. Hemos estado usando carnets con fotos de voluntarios pero ese no es
consistente ni eficiente.
Después de las vacaciones los voluntarios van a firmar sus nombres en la lista de visitantes en la oficina para que
sepamos quién está en la escuela. En vez de tener identificaciones individuales van a usar uno que dice volunteer.
Los voluntarios del programa de Escuelas de Esperanza van a seguir con sus propias identificaciones.

Physical Education News
While students are working towards all Wisconsin PE Standards,
students will be specifically focusing on the following standard in
physical education classes this month.
Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement
patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
Students in all grades will be participating in units focused on
developing and refining both locomotor and manipulative skills.
Locomotor skills include skips, hops, gallops, slides, etc. Students will be
performing these skills while using different pathways and speeds.
Manipulative skills include throwing/catching both underhand and
overhand, as well as controlling an object using feet or hands. Students in
grades K-2 will be developing these skills and students in grades 3-5 will
be refining these skills and applying them in more complex activities.
In addition we always stress the importance to students about giving
your best effort in both preferred and non-preferred activities, as well as
demonstrating good sportsmanship on a daily basis.

Mientras que los estudiantes están trabajando en todas los estándares
de educación física de Wisconsin, los estudiantes estarán enfocándose en
estándar 1 durante ese mes.
Estándar 1: Demuestra competencia en las habilidades motoras y los
patrones de movimiento necesarios para realizar una variedad de
actividades físicas.

Hace algunas semanas todos recibieron información del programa
dental Celebrate Smiles que vamos a tener un la escuela Thoreau al fin
de enero. El programa pide formularios de TODAS las familias aun los
que no quieren participar.
Para participar en la clínica dental favor de llenar toda la
información en ambos lados del formulario.
Pedimos que los que no quieren particpar escriban solo los nombres
de.sus hijos y que escriban NO en el formularo.
Si necesitan otras copias delos formularios nos pueden hablar a

A while ago, you received information about the Celebrate Smiles
program that is being offered to all students at Thoreau in the end of
January. We asked to get consent forms from ALL families, whether
they want the services or not.

the form. If you are not interested in the program, please fill in your
child’s name and write “NO” in large letters across the form.
