„Ashes to Easter‰
Some years ago my parish in Little Rock decided to take part in a Lenten program called
„Ashes to Easter‰. ItÊs a clever title because it describes Lent in three words. The ashes
are dry and dark gray; they crumble and feel gritty as they are smeared on the forehead.
Ashes are used one day of the year and if we wear them all that day, at work or at school
(especially public school), they can cause people either to think we didnÊt wash that
morning or that we must be Christian and are observing the beginning of Lent.
We might forget that we are wearing those ashes, but others will notice them and
even if they say nothing to us, they still may wonder about the grime on our foreheads in
the approximate shape of a cross. Let them wonder; better, let them ask.
In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, this very tangible sign of our imperfections is a
reminder to us and to others that sin is dark, dry and gritty, that it smears our lives with
self-love to the exclusion of other-love; ashes remind us that we need mercy. But they
also remind us that Easter is 40 days away: ashes to Easter.
During these 40 days we often make sacrifices for the sake of disciplining ourselves regarding food and
entertainment. Self-discipline is good for its own sake, but letÊs make it the servant of a larger goal: growing in our
relationship with God. Less time in front of the TV or computer games can translate into more time with the Lord
in prayer and spiritual reading. The Lenten goal is a deeper friendship with Jesus; the means to that goal is more
time with him by way of less time on entertainment.
If ashes are dry and gray, Easter is wet and colorful, sometime with spring rains but always with the baptismal
water that is blessed for the purpose of washing away sin. Ashes this year come on February 10 and Easter on
March 27. Make use of the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Allow your ashes to lead you through
Lent and into a joyful Easter.

„De las cenizas a la Pascua‰
Hace algunos años mi parroquia en Little Rock decidió participar en un programa de Cuaresma llamado "De las
cenizas a la Pascua". Es un título ingenioso porque describe la Cuaresma en tres palabras. Las cenizas son de color
gris oscuro y seco; se desmenuzan y se sienten arenosas al ser colocadas en nuestra frente. Las cenizas se utilizan un
día del año y si se dejan todo el día, en el trabajo o en la escuela (escuela pública especialmente), pueden hacer que
las personas, ya sea piensen que no nos lavamos esa mañana o que debemos ser cristianos y estamos atentos al inicio
de la Cuaresma.
Podríamos olvidarnos que estamos usando esas cenizas, pero otros lo notaran e incluso si no nos dicen algo,
todavía se preguntaran por la suciedad en la frente, con la forma aproximada a una cruz. Que se queden pensando;
mejor, que pregunten.
En este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia, este signo tangible de nuestras imperfecciones es un recordatorio para
nosotros y para los demás que el pecado es oscuro, seco y arenoso, que embadurna
nuestras vidas con el amor propio excluyendo el amor a otros; las cenizas nos
recuerdan que necesitamos misericordia. Pero también nos recuerdan que la Pascua
será dentro de 40 días: de las cenizas a la Pascua.
Durante estos 40 días a menudo hacemos sacrificios para disciplinarnos con
respecto a la comida y al entretenimiento. La autodisciplina es buena de por sí, pero
hagamos que esté al servicio de un bien mayor: crecer en nuestra relación con Dios.
Menos tiempo frente a los juegos de televisión o la computadora se puede traducir
en más tiempo con el Señor en la oración y la lectura espiritual. El objetivo de
Cuaresma es una amistad más profunda con Jesús; el medio para ese objetivo es
estar más tiempo con El y menos tiempo entretenidos.

ItÊs February and the Catholic Church worldwide is in the midst of the beautiful
season of Rites. The Catechism reads: „Rites are the diverse liturgical traditions in
which the one catholic and apostolic faith has come to be expressed and celebrated
in various cultures and lands.‰ Here at St. Vincent de Paul we have celebrated
several of these rites and look forward to another:
On January 17th, Catechumens, unbaptized persons, celebrated the Rite of
Acceptance. Before the congregation, they professed acceptance to a commitment
to follow Jesus.
On February 7th, Catechumens and Candidates, those baptized in another
Trinitarian Christian faith, celebrated the Rite of Sending: A rite recognizing their
spiritual formation in preparation for their initiation into the Roman Catholic
Church.
On February 13th, Catechumens and Candidates from eighteen area parishes will celebrate the Rite of Election
with Bishop Anthony Taylor here at SVdP. The act of Election by the bishop, the proclamation of admission for
reception of sacraments at Easter, is a significant turning point when they turn from being seekers to those who are
strongly committed to their faith.
For the upcoming Rite of Election, we ask our parishioners to keep the Catechumens and Candidates in your
prayers. I must admit, through the years I have sat in church pews and witnessed many of the Rites only by
recognizing different activities occurring from Mass, all the while not really aware of the richness, beauty and
spiritual significance transpiring before my eyes. This year, my heart has a deeper appreciation for our Catholic
liturgical traditions and my prayers greater spiritual meaning.

Es febrero y la Iglesia Católica en todo el mundo está en medio de la hermosa temporada de Ritos. El Catecismo
dice: "Los ritos son las diversas tradiciones litúrgicas en las que la fe católica y apostólica se ha expresado y
celebrado en las diversas culturas y tierras." Aquí en San Vicente de Paúl hemos celebrado varios de estos ritos y
esperamos otros:
El 17 de enero los Catecúmenos, personas no bautizadas, celebraron el Rito de Aceptación. Delante de la
congregación, aceptaron el compromiso de seguir a Jesús.
El 7 de febrero los catecúmenos y candidatos, bautizados en otra fe cristiana trinitaria, celebraron el Rito de
Envío: Un rito reconociendo su formación espiritual en preparación para su iniciación en la Iglesia Católica Romana.
El 13 de febrero los Catecúmenos y Candidatos de dieciocho parroquias del área celebrarán el Rito de Elección
con el Obispo Anthony Taylor aquí en SVdP. El acto de la elección por el obispo, la proclamación de la admisión
para la recepción de los sacramentos en la Pascua, es un importante punto de inflexión cuando pasan de ser
solicitantes a estar fuertemente comprometidos con su fe.
Para el próximo Rito de Elección, pedimos a nuestros feligreses mantener a los catecúmenos y candidatos en sus
oraciones. Debo admitir que, a través de los años
me he sentado en bancos de la iglesia y fui testigo
de muchos de estos Ritos sólo reconociendo las
diferentes actividades que se producen a partir de
la misa, pero sin estar atenta a la vez a la riqueza, la
belleza y el significado espiritual que estaba
ocurriendo delante de mis ojos. Este año, mi
corazón tiene una apreciación más profunda de
nuestras tradiciones litúrgicas católicas y mis
oraciones mayor significado espiritual.

Jill, why was the Caregiver/Bereavement Ministry started? In 2013, I joined Jane
Quinn in a caregiving ministry that could address the needs of a caregiver who was
responsible for a spouse, child, parent, sibling or friend. It was important for me to meet
others who were experiencing similar situations/challenges, to know that I wasnÊt alone,
and that through the love and support of others I could follow the journey set before
me. LifeÊs journey has since taken me from caregiver to widowhood (bereavement)
which has taught me to trust in Jesus as He listens, consoles and lovingly ministers to all
my needs. Our hearts are always open to include others in our group. (Jill Hopper)

Lent is the 40 days before Easter in which Catholics pray, fast, contemplate, and engage in acts of spiritual
self-discipline. Catholics do these things because Easter, which celebrates the Resurrection of Christ, is the greatest
holy day of the Christian year (even above Christmas) and Catholics have recognized that it is appropriate to
prepare for such a holy day by engaging in such disciplines.
The reason Lent lasts 40 days is that 40 is the traditional number of judgment and spiritual testing in the Bible
(Gn 7:4, Ex 24:18, 34:28, Nm 13:25, 14:33, Jon 3:4). Lent bears particular relationship to the 40 days Christ spent
fasting in the desert before entering into his public ministry (Mt 4:1-11). Catholics imitate Christ by spending 40
days in spiritual discipline before the celebration of Christ's triumph over sin and death.
Fasting is a biblical discipline that can be defended from both the Old and the New Testament. Christ expected
his disciples to fast (Mt 9:14-15) and issued instructions for how they should do so (Mt 6:16-18). Catholics follow
this pattern by holding a partial fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Abstinence from certain foods is also a biblical discipline. In Daniel 10:2-3 we read, "In those days I, Daniel, was
mourning for three weeks. I ate no delicacies, no meat or wine entered my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, for
the full three weeks." Catholics use a practice similar to Daniel's when, as a way of commemorating Christ's
Crucifixion on a Friday, we abstain from eating meat on that day of the week during Lent. The only kind of flesh
we eat on Friday is fish, which is a symbol of Christ.
La Cuaresma son los 40 días antes de la Pascua de Resurrección en la cual los católicos oran, ayunan,
contemplan y participan en actos de autodisciplina espiritual. Los Católicos hacen estas cosas porque Pascua, que
celebra la resurrección de Cristo, es el grandioso día santo del año Cristiano (incluso por encima de Navidad) y los
Católicos han reconocido que es apropiado prepararse para un día tan santo participando de esas disciplinas.

católicos siguen esta disciplina sosteniendo un ayuno parcial el miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo.

días yo, Daniel, estaba de luto durante tres semanas. No comí alimentos sabrosos, no entraron en mi boca ni carne,
ni vino, ni me perfume durante tres semanas". Los católicos utilizamos una práctica similar a la de Daniel cuando,
como una forma de conmemorar la crucifixión de Cristo un viernes, nos abstenemos de comer carne en ese día de la
semana durante la Cuaresma. El único tipo de carne que comemos el viernes es el pescado, que es un símbolo de
Cristo.
