ATLANTIC SAILOR
Sebastian Clover is a 15-year old boy who lives in the south of
England. In January, he became the youngest person ever to
travel from one side of the Atlantic Ocean to the other, all
alone in a sailing boat.
It took Sebastian 25 days to sail from Tenerife to the island of Antigua in the
Caribbean. This isn’t very fast, but it is a long way for someone so young!
The weather was fine during Sebastian’s trip, which was lucky, and he wasn’t
always completely alone. Sometimes very large fish swam along next to his
boat. At first he was afraid that they were dangerous, but the fish were just
being friendly.
The main problem that Sebastian had on the trip was when his telephone
stopped working. His parents were really worried about him, because he
usually phoned them every day, but for the last three days he couldn’t.
Sebastian was sorry not to talk to them.
Sebastian kept a video diary on his trip. You will soon be able to buy this video
in the shops. Sebastian wants to sail round the world next and he needs to save
up some money to pay for the trip. If you buy his video, this will help him.

OPENING A RESTAURANT
Twelve months ago Robin Parker left his job at an insurance company. He now runs a
restaurant which is doing very well since it opened four months ago.
Opening a restaurant was a big change for Robin. He loves travelling and all his favourite
television programmes are about cooking. One day, he read in a newspaper about a
doctor who left her job and moved to Italy to start a restaurant. He thought, “I can do
that!” His wife wasn’t very happy about the idea, and neither was his father. But his
brother, a bank manager, gave him lots of good ideas.
Robin lived in Oxford and had a job in London. He thought both places would be
difficult to open a restaurant in, so he chose Manchester because he knew the city from
his years at university. He found an empty building in a beautiful old street. It was old
and needed a lot of repairs, but all the other buildings were expensive and he didn’t have
much money.
Robin loves his new work. It’s difficult being the boss, but he has found an excellent
chef. He says he enjoys talking to customers and some of them have become his good
friends. He gets up at six a.m. and often goes to bed after midnight. It’s a long day but he
only starts to feel really tired when he takes time off at the weekends.
Robin’s restaurant is doing so well that he could take a long holiday. But he is busy with
his new idea to open a supermarket selling food from around the world. He’s already
found a building near his restaurant.

Read the text below
(I) An American idea of a good lunch is a large sandwich. The variety of sandwiches
available can be more than one can ever possibly imagine. Anything and almost everything
which can fit between two slices of bread can qualify as a sandwich.
The sandwich, however, did not originate in America. It was introduced in the 18th century
by the 4th Earl of Sandwich. He ordered that slices of cold beef be placed between pieces of
bread and be brought to him. Today it is a staple of the American diet.
(II) When bought from a delicatessen some sandwiches are so large that they can easily be
shared by two people. Depending upon where one goes in America, these extra-large
sandwiches can take on a different name. In New York they are called "heroes", but in Los
Angeles they are known as "submarines." In other places between the two coasts they are
referred to in a variety of ways; they can be "grinders," "hoagies," "poor boys" or
"torpedoes." There is also the Philly steak sandwich (steak, fried onions and melted
cheese), which originated in Philadelphia. Pastrami on rye bread is famous in New York
and the lobster roll can be found along the New England coast.
(III) There are also double-decker and triple-decker sandwiches. A double-decker consists
of two layers of filling with three slices of bread. A triple-decker is prepared with three
layers of filling and four slices of bread and must be eaten with great skill.
(IV) A bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich, more commonly called a BLT, is uniquely
famous and easy to prepare. Tuna fish, egg salad, ham and cheese, and roast beef are also
among the most popular and would surely be found on the top ten list of America's best
loved sandwiches. Another favourite is a grilled cheese sandwich which is filled with
processed cheese and a slice of ham and then grilled in a frying pan until the cheese melts
and oozes from the sides. A peanut butter and banana sandwich may seem a strange
combination to a novice, but it offers a unique taste for the adventurous, only if a diet is not
being considered. The most popular sandwich, however, is a cheeseburger on a roll served
by the many fast-food chains which are located all over the country. Ironically, a fast-food
chain called "Subway" specializes mostly in sandwiches and the menu contains a galaxy of
fillings.
(V) As varied as the fillings may be, so too are the kinds of breads in which they are served.
There are rye bread, white bread, pumpernickel and black bread. Some breads may contain
raisins or peanuts and all can be selected according to one's taste and the filling used.
(VI) Americans, it should be noted, love to eat their sandwiches with the crust intact.
Unlike the Japanese who prefer to remove the crust when making a sandwich, Americans
find a sandwich just not complete with the crust removed.
