Hi everyone! How are you? I’m fine here in London. The house I’m staying

flowers in the garden.
School is great! Our English teacher is Mr. Smith, he’s from the United
States. I have got a new friend, her name’s Julia. She isn’t English, she’s

playing tennis.

all good students.

At Home – At School
Matthew Thomas is English. He is 15 and his brother Paul is 13, but they don’t go to
school. They are in the Chilean city of Arica for a year because their parents are
scientists there. They study at home. Here is an interview with Mathew about home
education.
-Why do you study at home?
M: Well, there aren’t any English-speaking schools here and we don’t speak very
good Spanish. And we think you can learn a lot at home.

M: The usual subjects- Maths, English, History, and so on. But I study them in my
own way. I use books or the Internet. And sometimes our parents teach us.

M: Yes, I do. I love it! I can choose how to do things. I can study Maths on Monday
and Physics on Tuesday, or Biology on Monday and History on Tuesday. It’s up to
me.

M: No, I don’t. I’m hardly ever lonely. My brother and my parents are here. I’ve got

Following a dream
Lewis Hamilton was born in 1985 in England and his parents named him after the
American athlete Carl Lewis. Did they know that sporting fame was waiting for
their son, too?
When Lewis was six, his father gave him a radio controlled car and he began to win
competitions. From this very young age, Lewis’ dream was to become a Formula 1
driver so his father bought him a go-kart and he started go-kart racing in 1993 when
he was only 8 years old.
When he was 10 years old, Lewis met a man called Ron Dennis. Dennis was the
boss of the McLaren Formula 1 team. Lewis asked Dennis for his autograph, saying,
“My name’s Lewis Hamilton and one day I’m going to drive your cars”. A few
years later, Ron Dennis phoned him and in 1999 Hamilton joined McLaren’s
“Young Drivers” programme. He was the youngest person ever to do this.
Lewis started as a driver in F1 races in 2007. In his first six races, he came third,
second, second, second, second and first. Then, he came first again in his next race.
He finished the season in second place, behind Kimi Raikkonen. Then in 2008, at
the age of 23, Hamilton became the youngest world championship in F1 history
when he finished one point ahead of Felipe Massa.
Lewis Hamilton had a dream, and he followed it and found what he wanted. And
that’s success.
