VISITORS… All Visitors entering Hopeville School MUST report to the main office. You will be given
a visitor pass which must be visible at all times while you are in the building. You must also have proper
ID which will be kept in the main office while you are visiting the school.

NOTES FOR THE OFFICE.. If you know that you are picking up your child early from school for an
appointment, please send a note in notifying the teacher/main office. For the safety of your child, this will
help us to be aware of who will be entering the building. If you need to pick up your child due to an
emergency, please call the school prior to your arrival. These procedures are set in place so that we will
be aware of who will be entering our building on any given day. We appreciate your cooperation with
these procedures.

favor de enviar una nota al maestro/a o la oficina. Para la seguridad de su niño, asi estaremos pendiente

JUST A REMINDER…Due to the numerous food allergies in the building we are asking that you do not
send in any outside food for any reason. If you want to celebrate your child’s birthday with a small token
(i.e., glow stick, pencil, small pad, etc) that is fine.

Welcome to our PBIS Post
Our PBIS spirit day for the month of February is “Wear Red for Valentine’s Day”, it will take place on
2/12/16, remember it costs $1.00 to participate. Let’s show our PBIS PRIDE and all wear RED!! Our
PBIS monthly celebration will take place on 2/26/16; it will be “Mr. Erdmann’s Music Festival.” He has
been putting a lot of work into its planning; we hope to see everyone there. Remember what it means to
be a Hopeville Husky and continue to practice your PAWS Pledge daily.

Jump Rope for Heart: Hopeville School has teamed up with the American Heart Association to raise
money to help people who struggle with heart conditions! You should see a Jump Rope for Heart pledge
form come home in the next week. The money can be returned to Mrs. Stone throughout the month of
February. Students can earn Thank You gifts for making donations. Let's work together to help this great
cause!!

NEWS AROUND HOPEVILLE HALLS
Kindergarten
This year is already going by so quickly! Kindergarten is working harder than ever, beginning to read and
write sentences that tell a story. We are sounding out words and writing them as well. We will also
begin practicing the new sight words, please continue to check your child’s homework nightly and review
the current letters and words with them.
We will be concentrating on Black History Month in February, and learning more about the
weather and seasons. In math we will be concentrating on teen numbers and using shapes in different
ways.
Please continue to dress your child for cold weather. If you child is wearing a long sleeve shirt
under their short sleeves, IT MUST BE SCHOOL COLOR. Thank you for understanding.
Este año va tan rápido! Kindergarten está trabajando más duro que nunca, comenzando a leer y escribir
oraciones que cuentan una historia. Estamos sondeando las palabras y escribiéndolas también. Al igual
que vamos a comenzar a practicar las nuevas palabras de alta frecuencia. Verifique la tarea de su hijo(a)

favor continúe leyendo con su hijo(a) los libros enviados y repase el personaje, escenario, la secuencia
(primero, después, ultimo), el problema y solución del cuento. En matemáticas continuaremos con los
números del 10-20 y suma. Hemos estado contando del 1-100 e identificando los números del 1-20. Por

First Grade News Letter/ Boletín de primer grado
January has been a busy month for the first graders! We have continued to work hard on story elements in
reading. (character, setting, problem, and solution) Ask your child about the wonderful stories we have
read. In spelling and writing, we have begun working on long vowels. (long o: oa,ow words; long a: ai, ae, ay words; long i: i-e words) Ask your child how magic e works and what makes up a vowel team. We
have also been writing our own stories that include all of the story elements we have learned. In math, we
worked on addition with larger numbers. We have also been learning about place value. Please make sure
your child practices reading each night and completes their homework.

Newsletter from the 2nd Grade
Happy New Year and we have begun the 3nd Marking Period.
The biggest news in 2nd Grade continues to be our new phonics program called FUNdations.
This is a very strict, regimented, but fun program that will help your student with sounds, penmanship,
spelling and ultimately reading. We are sending home an intro letter each time we start a new unit…in the
packet are a number of homework pages and a page or two of explanation so that the parent can help the
student. These activities are optional, but highly recommended. They do not have to be done all at
once…you should follow the pacing guide. Your students have had the advantage of FUNdations at the
first grade level…so they know a lot already.
In Math we are learning about measurement and geometry. Looking around in real life for shapes
such as triangles and squares is helpful. The students need to know that these are practical, real-world
items, and not just in a math book.
In Reading, we are working on Legends, Folktales, Fables, Fairy tales and Tall Tales….each have their
own defining qualities…a moral, exaggeration, etc.
Snow may be falling soon, and we love to play in the snow…but make sure your student keeps up
with school work…reading, math, and writing. Play with coins, look at clocks, look at environmental
print (signs, papers, labels, etc.) join the library and read some books. Learn math facts. Watch science on
TV. In Math, we spent a lot of time learning number lines, expanded form, base 10 blocks, and looking at
the 100’s number chart. NOW we are being presented with problems where we have to pick from all these
helpful strategies to solve two step word problems and to add or subtract 2 digit numbers. This is
presenting some difficulties for our students, so we will keep working on it.
Please keep checking the Friday Folders and emptying them out each weekend. Send back any
papers you need to sign.

La noticia más importante en segundo grado continúa siendo nuestro programa de fonética
llamado Fundaciones. Este es un programa muy estricto, reglamentado, pero divertido que ayudará a su
estudiante con los sonidos, la caligrafía, la ortografía y en última instancia la lectura. Estamos enviando a
casa una carta de introducción cada vez que empezamos una nueva unidad ... el paquete es una serie de
páginas de las tareas y una o dos páginas con la explicación para que el padre puede ayudar al estudiante.
Estas actividades son opcionales, pero muy recomendables. Ellos no tienen que hacerlo todo a la vez ...
usted debe seguir la guía de pauta. Sus estudiantes han tenido la ventaja de que Fundaciones se dio en el
primer nivel de grado.
En matemáticas estamos aprendiendo sobre la medición y la geometría. Mirando a su alrededor en
la vida real de formas tales como triángulos y cuadrados es útil. Los estudiantes deben saber que estos
son, los elementos del mundo real la práctica, y no sólo en un libro de matemáticas. Aparte de las
unidades de medir. Centimetro y pulgadas.
En lectura, estamos trabajando en leyendas, cuentos populares, fábulas, cuentos de hadas y Cuentos Tall
... .Cada tiene sus propias cualidades que definen ... una moraleja, la exageración, etc.
Nieve puede caer pronto, y nos encanta jugar en la nieve ... pero asegúrese de que su estudiante mantiene
al día su trabajo escolar ... lectura, matemáticas y escritura. Juega con las monedas, mira los relojes, mira
impresión ambiental (signos, papeles, etiquetas, etc.) vayan a a la biblioteca y lean algunos libros.
Aprenda operaciones matemáticas. Mira la ciencia en la televisión. En matemáticas, pasamos un montón
de tiempo en rectas numéricas de aprendizaje, forma expandida, base de 10 , y mirando a la carta de los
100 números. Ahora se nos presenta con problemas en los que tenemos que elegir entre todas estas
estrategias para resolver problemas de dos pasos decider si es sumar o restar con números de 2 dígitos.
Esto presenta algunas dificultades para nuestros estudiantes, por lo que vamos a seguir trabajando en ello.
Por favor revise las carpetas de los viernes y vaciar a cada fin de semana. Enviar todos los papeles que

Third Grade News
The third graders are busy wrapping up our unit on theme and author’s message. Students are working in
cooperative groups to create posters that illustrate the text evidence to prove theme. Our next unit will
focus on nonfiction. Students will be reading biographies as well as analyzing nonfiction text structures,
such as glossaries, table of contents, captions, illustrations, maps, etc. Students will be learning about
their state of Connecticut and work in groups to explore another state in The United States. The third
grade teachers are also wrapping up the MCLASS and TRC testing. Student reports with their middle of
year fluency (words per minute) and reading comprehension scores will be sent home soon. Please
continue to have your child read at least twenty minutes every night and ask your child questions about
what they are reading.
In late January and early February all of the third graders will be visiting the Mattatuck Museum. This
field trip focuses on the early history of Waterbury. Students will learn about some of the first families to
settle in Waterbury and about the mills that were set up for industry. If the weather is mild, students will
be able to tour the Waterbury green and learn about the monuments they see.
Students have been working on using various models to represent elapsed time, including number lines
and tables. The math unit is moving on to explore other methods of measurement, including mass and
volume. Talk with your children about the capacity of different food containers in your house, such as a
two liter bottle. We will soon be exploring properties of shapes and fractions. It is important to continue
practicing multiplication flash cards every night.
Los estudiantes de tercer grado están muy ocupados terminando la unidad del mensaje del autor. Están
trabajando en grupos para crear ilustraciones que corroboren las evidencias de los temas. Nuestra
siguiente unidad se enfoca en historias reales, no ficticias. Los estudiantes estarán leyendo biografías y
analizando las estructuras de los textos, tales como glosarios, tablas de contenido, leyendas, ilustraciones,
mapas etc. Los estudiantes estarán también aprendiendo sobre su estado Connecticut y trabajaran en
grupo para explorar otro estado de los Estados Unidos. En tercer grado estamos también concluyendo los
exámenes de lectura MCLASS y TRC (IDEL/Spanish TRC) Vamos a enviar a casa los reportes de la
fluencia en la lectura (palabras/minutos) y el nivel de comprensión de mitad de año. Por favor continúen
leyendo con su hijo/a por lo menos 20 minutos cada noche y háganle preguntas acerca de lo que están
leyendo.
Al final de Enero y comienzo de Febrero los estudiantes estarán visitando el museo Mattatuck en
Waterbury. Este paseo se enfoca en la formación de Waterbury. Los estudiantes estarán aprendiendo
acerca de las primeras familias que fundaron esta ciudad y de las factorías e industrias que se
establecieron. Si la temperatura no está muy fría los estudiantes podrán caminar por el área del parque
para aprender de los monumentos.
Los estudiantes han estado utilizando varios modelos para representar el tiempo transcurrido, incluyendo
la línea numérica y tablas. La unidad de matemáticas ahora se trata de explorar métodos de medidas
métricas, incluyendo masa y volumen. Hable con su hijo/a acerca de la capacidad de diferentes envases
en su casa, como botellas de dos litros. Pronto estaremos explorando las propiedades de las fracciones.
Es importante que continúen practicando las tablas de multiplicación cada noche.

Fifth Grade News
The fifth graders are extremely happy that we have completed our middle of the year testing! We have
seen a lot of growth thanks to every one’s hard work! We will begin reading the book, Wonder, which has
a lot of important life lessons to teach. It ties in perfectly with the Kindess Matters challenges that Mrs.
Calabrese has been sharing with us.
In Math, the fifth graders are applying strategies based on place value and the relationship between
multiplication and division to find solutions to problems featuring the division of whole numbers.
Lastly, congratulations to our Students of the Month below. Way to end the 2nd Marking Period!
