All The Things You Want to Know about
The local Social Security Office, Welfare Office, and
Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) will be
coming to speak with Public Housing residents about
the benefits that will help you keep your monthly
benefits while considering a return to work. During
this time of budget concerns on a National level, we
need to know NOW what kind of help we can get. You
can work and not lose your benefits, and you can keep
your benefits while you make plans to return to work.
The presentation will take approximately 30 minutes.
After the presentation, the staff will stay until 5:30 pm
to answer your questions. This presentation will be in
Spanish and in English. Do NOT lose this chance to
learn more about what benefits are available to you.
Las oficinas locales de Seguro Social, Bienestar
Público y Rehabilitación Vocacional (OVR) vendrán
para hablar con los residentes de vivienda pública sobre
los beneficios mensuales que puedes mantener mientras
consideras regresar a trabajar. Durante este tiempo de
problemas de presupuesto a nivel nacional, nosotros
necesitamos saber AHORA sobre cual tipo de ayuda
podriamos obtener. Usted puede trabajar y no perder
sus beneficiosy puede mantener sus beneficios mientras
hace planes para volver a trabajar.
Esta presentación tomará alrededor de 30 minutos.

Our last newsletter was distributed in January and we’ve had
a lot happen since then, here’s an update:

We hosted a great Black History Month event at
Wellington on February 10. Tim Warfield and
Melissa Shockley City-honored volunteer both
spoke. The speeches were followed by a performance
by Salt of the Earth, featuring one of our residents. The program was well attended. We are
proud of the committee members who planned this
event. Pizza was served and crafts were provided for
the children to partake in.
Llevamos a cabo un gran evento para celebrar el Mes
de la Historia Negra en el Centro de Wellington el día
10 de febrero. Tim Warfield y Melissa Shockley -la
ciudad la honoró ambos presentaron sus discursos.
Los discursos fueron seguidos por la presentación de
Salt of the Earth, con la actuación de uno de nuestros
residentes. El evento fue muy concurrido. Estamos
orgullosos de los miembros del comité que planificó
este evento. Se sirvio pizza y los niños hicieron
artesarnias.
On 02/12/13, the Thackston Park Job Fair was held at
the Codorus Community Building and the Jefferson
Building. Over 60 candidates completed applications.
Applications were forwarded to Harkins for review.
There were 16 prospective positions available for hire
and at least 4 people were hired from our job fair!!!
YCST who offers the free GED classes at Jefferson,
had a student pass their GED exam. We are so very
proud and wish her continued success in her life. You
can do it too!!!
The Wellness Center & YHA hosted a “Kick The
Butt” event on March 19, 2013 from 11 am to 2 pm. The
health fair focused on tobacco cessation as part of the
National “Kick Butt Day” program. We provided education and referrals for individuals interested in seeking help to “just quit” or even taper their tobacco use.
This event was open to the community, residents and
YHA staff. 2 City council members attended and 2
news reporters also came. If we helped one person
quit or taper their smoking, It was a major success.
During the months of February and March we held a
Safe Kids Workshop. The workshops aimed to identify and prevent childhood injuries through education,
networking and advocacy.
We also offered Girl Scouts for girls in kindergarten
and 1st grade. We had three girls enrolled.
Parkway now has an official Resident CouncilParkway Homes Tenant Council!!! We look forward
to all the great things that will come from Parkway.
En 02/12/13, la feria de empleo para Thackston Park se
llevó a cabo en el Centro Comunitario de Codorus y
en el Edificio de Jefferson. Más de 60 candidatos
completaron aplicaciones. Las aplicaciones fueron
enviadas a Harkins para su revisión. Hubieron 16
posibles posiciones disponibles y al menos 4 personas
fueron contratadas de nuestro feria de empleo!!!
YCST quien ofrece clases gratuitas para obtener el
certificado de cuarto año aquí en Jefferson, tuvo un
estudiante que aprobó el examen. Nosotros estamos
muy orgullosos y le deseamos mucho éxito en su vida.

El Centro de Salud y la YHA llevarón a cabo el evento
“Patea las Colillas” el 19 de marzo de 2013 de 11 am a
2 pm. La feria de salud se enfocó en dejar de fumar
como parte del Programa Nacional “Día de Patear las
Colillas”. Nosotros proveimos material educativo y
referidos a los individuos interesados en buscar ayuda
para dejar de fumar o reducir el uso de tabaco. Este
evento fue abierto a la comunidad, residentes y em
pleados de YHA. Miembros del Consejo de la Ciudad
y dos periodistas tambien asistieron. Si ayudamos a
una persona a dejar o reducir el uso del tabaco, enton
ces fue un gran éxito.
Durante los meses de Febrero y Marzo se llevó a cabo
el taller Niños Seguros. Los talleres dirigidos a
identificar y prevenir lesions infantiles a través de la
educación, redes de comunicación y promoción.
También se ofreció el programa de Niñas Escucha para
niñas de kindergarten a primer grado. Tuvimos tres
niñas registradas.
Parkway ahora tiene oficialmente un Consejo de
Residentes - Consejo de Residentes de las Casas de
Parkway!!! Esperamos que muchas cosas grandes
venga para Parkway. Intentemos conseguir que
Codorus y Wellington venga abordo también.

Boscov's and the 911 Cell Phone Bank have partnered to promote responsible cell phone
recycling and provide emergency communications to those in need.
Customers who have used cell phones are encouraged to drop them off at the Customer Service
desk at any Boscov's location. Collected cell phones will be sent to the 911 Cell Phone Bank
for processing. In return, the 911 Cell Phone Bank will provide law enforcement in
communities served by Boscov's with free emergency cell phones for
seniors and victims of abuse.

Codorus Homes Tenants are Moving
Our first resident moved out of Codorus Homes on December 7, 2012. 10 residents have
already settled into their new homes. I feel privileged to have the responsibility to work with all
the families. We started this process on May 24, 2012 with the interviewing sessions. Having to
move from the familiar to the unknown is very stressful. Those who have already moved have
shown a tremendous inner strength and determination. For those who have moved already, I admire you, and I wish you all the happiness that your heart can hold. For those who have not
moved yet, KEEP IN TOUCH WITH ME!!!!!!!!! (please), Ellen.
Residentes de las Casas de Codorus ya se están mudando
Nuestro primer residente se mudó de las Casas de Codorus el 7 de diciembre de 2012.
10 residentes ya están instalados en sus nuevas casas. Me siento privilegiada al tener la
responsabilidad de trabajar con todas estas familias. Nosotros
comenzamos este proceso el 24 de mayo de 2012 con sesiones de entrevistas individuales.
Tener que pasar de lo conocido a lo desconocido es muy estresante. A los que ya se han mudado
han mostrado una tremenda fuerza interior y determinación. A los que ya se
mudaron, los admiro y les deseo toda la felicidad que su corazón pueda aguantar.

(FSS) is a nationwide program that has a
long history here at the York Housing
Authority. It is a great opportunity for
working families, or families who would
like to work, to earn money towards home

desires! In the history of FSS here at the
York Housing Authority, we have
disbursed close to $200,000 to our
residents in this program.

York Campus there will be a career fair. Anyone that is
a displaced worker, an underemployed worker, or
someone with a barrier to employment should attend
this event. Attending this career fair will allow you to
network with employers and explore community
support for your job search.
The event will take place in the Cytec
building at the HACC campus in the Arthur Glatfelter
Community Room located at 2161 Pennsylvania Avenue

Just a few short reminders to all residents from Parkway Management Office:
Gardens: must be on smaller side of yard and no larger than 3 ft. x 9 ft. Check
with your Management office for a list of the guidelines before you start your
garden.
Appliance Installation: Remember to complete your installation paper at the
Management office prior to installing any appliance.
Litter: Residents are responsible for all Litter - front, rear and sides whether they
put it there or not as stated in the Handbook. No warnings given – automatic fine.

The Homes at Thackston Park
Construction is continuing on Thackston
Park. Nine buildings are up, with three more
buildings and the Community Center
remaining to be built. An on-line application
and details regarding eligibility for this Tax
Credit housing is available on the YHA
website effective March 18, 2013. We expect
that residents will begin to move in
around July 1, 2013.

Nueve edificios están en alza, con tres más
