Dear Friends,
As we observe Rev. Martin Luther King’s Holiday tomorrow, my thoughts bring me back to my
seminary days in the segregated town of Cullman, Alabama where I spent two years of theological training
at St. Bernard’s Abbey. I recall traveling often to Birmingham, some 40 mile south, with its separate toilet
facilities marked “Black Only” and “White Only.” Drinking water fountains were similarly marked. Back
then, separate sections at many lunch counters were the norm. To a 24 year old theological student from
Rhode Island this was quite foreign. Cullman was just as segregated with separate seating sections in the
local movie theatre. Riding the bus in Birmingham also had separate seating sections. The violence going
on, at the same time, in Selma, Alabama was more than just television news - it was happening just miles
away. Shortly after being ordained in Richmond in 1966 it was mandated of all clergy to be bonded by the
state and backed up by a landholder. This was to ensure that the fine imposed on me if I married a mixed
race couple would be paid. Thankfully this changed a year or so after I was ordained. To our younger
generation all of this is ancient history, yet it all happened less than 50 years ago.
We have come a long way since Dr. King delivered his “I Have A Dream” speech. Yet we still have much
work to do towards acceptance of all people. Today, some have difficulty accepting our Islamic sisters and
brothers. How easily can we - perhaps unconsciously - think of terrorism. I have been in the company of
many Imams and have friends who are faithful members of Islam. It has always disturbed me when I hear
people making disparaging comments about those who are “different” from us - be that religion, skin color,
lifestyle, culture, without having any real knowledge of who these people are. Are we all not different from
the other? The words of Pope Francis come to mind: “Who am I to judge?” The words of another Pope I
greatly admired, John XXIII, also come to mind: “Let us look at what unites rather than divides us.” With
all of our differences we still have much more in common.
As I look back on my seminary days in Birmingham and Cullman we have come a long way. However, we
still have much more to do to realize the dream of Martin Luther King. Try to find some good in those we
might label “Different.” Think of an orchestra. The violin is not the viola, the trumpet is not the tuba, the
harp is not at all like the percussion section, and the organ is different from the piano. Yet, when all are
played in unison we have a beautiful symphony. Naïve on my part? Perhaps. It wouldn’t be the first time I
have been called that. I still believe, as did the late author, Anne Frank, tormented by the Nazi’s in
Holland , that all people are basically good. And remember the words of medical missionary, Dr. Albert
Schweitzer (1875-1965): “Constant kindness can accomplish much. As the sun makes ice melt, kindness
causes misunderstandings, mistrust, and hostility to evaporate.”
Have a nice holiday and remember what this man, whom we are honoring tomorrow, actually did.

“Nuts and Bolts #2”
Preparing for the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism is an exciting time in anyone’s family. Here is some
helpful advice to assist in planning this celebration. First of all, notify the parish office of the date on which you
would like to have your child baptized. Here at Nativity, baptisms take place on the first and third Sundays of
each month. However the number of baptisms each Sunday is limited to eight, so you need to sign up, as well as register to
attend the Baptism class, if you have not attended a class previously. Then, try to fulfill all of the Church requirements as
quickly as possible, as time has a way of getting away from all of us. If your sponsor or godparent is from out of state or
even the country, it might take some time for the necessary certificate of eligibility to arrive, so it is best to get this paperwork moving quickly. If you have members of your extended family who would like to celebrate the sacrament here at Nativity, there is an additional step you should follow. Most parishes are pleased to grant permission to allow infants
whose families reside within their boundaries to be baptized at another parish. Fr. Martin gives his permission for
these baptisms frequently. Out of respect for our fellow parishes, we also ask for their letters of permission,
which they are more than willing to send to us. But all of this takes time, so if you have an upcoming baptism,
please check with the parish office to see what needs to be done to have the celebration indeed be a happy and
blessed one.
Church of the Nativity Weather Policy
During inclement weather, the Church and
CCD Offices follow the same schedule as
Fairfax County Public Schools. If Schools
are closed the Parish Office and the CCD
Office are closed and there will be no morning Mass. In addition, all Parish activities for that day
will be canceled.
Weekend Programs and Events
If Fairfax County Public Schools cancel events, such as
on weekends, CCD and all parish events are also
cancelled.
Two Hour Delay
If Fairfax County Public Schools open two hours late,
our offices will open at 10 a.m., but the morning Mass
will be held at its regularly scheduled time, 7:30 a.m.
Any Parish activity scheduled before 10 a.m. will also
be canceled.

LLEGÓ SU HORA…LA DE JESÚS

En medio de una sociedad, donde tanto se busca y tanto se ofrece, implica
relacionarnos con personas y organizaciones.
1.Hoy, Juan Bautista, nos acerca una carta de presentación de Jesús de Nazaret y con un objetivo: atraer
nuestra atención y, sobre todo, ver todo el historial que –ya desde antiguo- completaba el currículum de Aquel
que, siendo Niño, fue bautizado en el río Jordán y que ha iniciado su vida pública.
Es una carta de presentación un tanto original: viene a quitar los pecados del mundo. No viene con grandes
programas de actuación (o por lo menos con aquellos a los que estamos acostumbrados). Su objetivo no es otro
que llenarnos de paz de Dios y acercarnos un poco la gracia de Dios para que nos sintamos sus hijos.
Hoy, Juan Bautista, con la carta de presentación de Jesús nos hace sentir que el dolor es posible llevarlo
sin que nos aplaste. Que con la llegada de Jesús, siervo humilde y dócil, es posible encontrar respuestas a mil
absurdos que nos crean dudas, incomodidad o infelicidad.
Se acercaba un joven a una oficina de empleo. Al llegarle su turno, el funcionario –con frialdad más que con
profesionalidad- le preguntó: ¿Qué garantías nos trae vd para trabajar? El joven, un tanto decepcionado,
contestó: traigo lo que soy, mi persona, mis ganas y necesidad de trabajar.
Ese es Jesús. No tiene más pretensiones que ofrecer todo su ser a favor del Reino de Dios, una realidad invisible
pero visible en la medida que nos esforzamos por convertir la injusticia en justicia, la mentira en verdad, la
cobardía en audacia, la tristeza en alegría, la tacañería en bondad. Y, esto, puede que en “currículum” que exige
el mundo, no sea bien recibido. ¡Estamos tan acostumbrados a exigir profesionalidad y no dignidad!
2.Hoy, ante el mostrador de nuestra vida cristiana, se presenta un tal Jesús con una credencial muy
genuina: “Cordero de Dios”. Aquel que es capaz de dar la vida por los que somos tan económicos a la hora de
ofrecerla. Aquel que camina por delante, cuando nosotros, preferimos estar detrás de la barrera en situaciones
complicadas o que nos pueden traer sin sabores. Aquel, Jesús, que disfruta sirviendo –no sólo las estipuladas 8
horas laborales- sino en jornada continua y sin remuneración alguna. Bueno sí, con un poco de amor…se paga a
Jesús y al mismo Dios.
A muchos, esta forma de presentarse Jesús, les dirá poco o nada. Están, estamos, acostumbrados a las luces,
sonidos, marketing y espectáculo. Pero, Juan Bautista, nos dice que el Cordero de Dios es aquel que –lejos de
buscar un empleo con tan pobre currículum- busca y tiene un objetivo: llevarnos a Dios y hacer que vivamos
como hijos de Dios.
Ojala, también de nosotros, pudieran decir: éstos son los que hacen frente a muchas dificultades; los que aligeran
el peso de los hombros de los demás; los que se sacrifican y trabajan en movimientos eclesiales para que, niños,
pobres, sacerdotes, parroquias, o fines sociales sigan adelante. ¡Éstos son los que “como corderos” ofrecen la
lana de su tiempo y la sangre de su carisma, su creatividad o su espiritualidad para que, la Iglesia y el Reino de
Dios, o el Reino de Dios y la Iglesia, sigan brotando como paz amor de Dios en la tierra.
Que, en estos días en los que celebramos el Octavario por la Unión de los Cristianos, pidamos al Buen Pastor, al
único Señor, que la Iglesia –más pronto que tarde-vuelva a ser también una única casa, presidida y fortalecida
por la unidad de todos los cristianos. Al fin y al cabo, en uno de sus puntos, Jesús, lo dejo bien claro: “que todos
sean uno”.

Ordinario no significa de poca importancia, anodino,
insulso, incoloro. Sencillamente, con este nombre se
le quiere distinguir de los “tiempos fuertes”, que son
el ciclo de Pascua y el de Navidad con su preparación
y su prolongación.
Es el tiempo más antiguo de la organización
del año cristiano. Y además, ocupa la mayor parte del
año: 33 ó 34 semanas, de las 52 que hay.
El Tiempo Ordinario tiene su gracia particular que hay que
pedir a Dios y buscarla con toda la ilusión de nuestra vida: así como
en este Tiempo Ordinario vemos a un Cristo ya maduro, responsable
ante la misión que le encomendó su Padre, le vemos crecer en edad,
sabiduría y gracia delante de Dios su Padre y de los hombres, le vemos ir y venir, desvivirse por cumplir la Voluntad de su Padre, brindarse a los hombres…así también nosotros en el Tiempo Ordinario
debemos buscar crecer y madurar nuestra fe, nuestra esperanza y
nuestro amor, y sobre todo, cumplir con gozo la Voluntad Santísima
de Dios. Esta es la gracia que debemos buscar e implorar de Dios
durante estas 33 semanas del Tiempo Ordinario.
Crecer. Crecer. Crecer. El que no crece, se estanca, se enferma y muere. Debemos crecer en nuestras tareas ordinarias: matrimonio, en la vida espiritual, en la vida profesional, en el trabajo, en
el estudio, en las relaciones humanas. Debemos crecer también en
medio de nuestros sufrimientos, éxitos, fracasos. ¡Cuántas virtudes
podemos ejercitar en todo esto! El Tiempo Ordinario se convierte así
en un gimnasio auténtico para encontrar a Dios en los acontecimientos diarios, ejercitarnos en virtudes, crecer en santidad…y todo se
convierte en tiempo de salvación, en tiempo de gracia de Dios. ¡Todo
es gracia para quien está atento y tiene fe y amor!
El espíritu del Tiempo Ordinario queda bien descrito en el
prefacio VI dominical de la misa: “En ti vivimos, nos movemos y
existimos; y todavía peregrinos en este mundo, no sólo experimentamos las pruebas cotidianas de tu amor, sino que poseemos ya en
prenda la vida futura, pues esperamos gozar de la Pascua eterna,
porque tenemos las primicias del Espíritu por el que resucitaste a
Jesús de entre los muertos”.
Este Tiempo Ordinario se divide como en dos “tandas”.
Una primera, desde después de la Epifanía y el bautismo del Señor
hasta el comienzo de la Cuaresma. Y la segunda, desde después de
Pentecostés hasta el Adviento.
Les invito a aprovechar este Tiempo Ordinario con gran
fervor, con esperanza, creciendo en las virtudes teologales. Es
tiempo de gracia y salvación. Encontraremos a Dios en cada rincón
de nuestro día. Basta tener ojos de fe para descubrirlo, no vivir miopes y encerrados en nuestro egoísmo y problemas. Dios va a pasar
por nuestro camino. Y durante este tiempo miremos a ese Cristo
apóstol, que desde temprano ora a su Padre, y después durante el
día se desvive llevando la salvación a todos, terminando el día rendido a los pies de su Padre, que le consuela y le llena de su infinito
amor, de ese amor que al día siguiente nos comunicará a raudales.
Si no nos entusiasmamos con el Cristo apóstol, lleno de fuerza, de
amor y vigor…¿con quién nos entusiasmaremos?

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Cristo, déjanos acompañarte durante este Tiempo Ordinario, para
que aprendamos de ti a cómo comportarnos con tu Padre, con los
demás, con los acontecimientos prósperos o adversos de la vida.
Vamos contigo, ¿a quién temeremos? Queremos ser santos para
santificar y elevar a nuestro mundo.
Puedes, si crees que puedes

En la Biblia hay una frase de Jesús que suena
como un auténtico reto para el que lo quiera
tomar, se encuentra en Marcos 11, 22-24. Es
la siguiente: Tened fe en Dios, yo os aseguro,
que quien diga a éste monte: "quítate y arrójate al mar"; y no vacile en su corazón, sino que crea que va a
suceder lo que dice, lo obtendrá. Por eso os digo, todo cuanto pidáis
en la oración, creed que ya lo habéis recibido, y lo obtendréis. Lo
más importante es esta expresión: y no vacile en su corazón... no
dude, sino que crea que va a suceder lo que dice.
Jesús lo expresa en forma negativa, no dudar, y en forma
positiva, que crea que va a suceder.
Muy pocos aceptan el reto, algunos de ustedes puede que lo
hayan aceptado alguna vez; y podrían decirme realmente que lo que
dice Jesús, es exacto.
Personalmente yo les puedo asegurar, que cuando tuve fe
como un grano de mostaza, me salieron las cosas. Es una ley espiritual, que funciona a la manera de las leyes físicas y que se podría
formular brevemente así: "Puedes, si crees que puedes". Los santos,
todos, tienen esa fe. Por ejemplo, San Pablo decía: "no soy nada,
pero todo lo puedo en Cristo que me conforta".
¿Qué es esta fe y como funciona?
La fe es una certeza, una seguridad total y absoluta de que algo se va
a realizar apoyándose en el poder de Dios y como consecuencia en el
poder que Dios nos ha dado a nosotros. Es una ley que Dios ha
puesto a disposición del que quiera usarla como ha puesto tantas
otras cosas.
Por ejemplo, pensemos en la ley de la gravedad. Si yo tengo
en la mano un reloj y lo suelto, no se queda, ya sé que no se va a
quedar flotando, se va al suelo y, si hay mucha distancia, lo normal
es que se eche a perder. Como sabemos eso, no cometemos el error
de lanzarnos por la ventana de un quinto piso, porque
sabemos taxativamente que nos vamos a dar un golpe y posiblemente
muramos.
Es una ley espiritual que funciona con la misma exactitud.
Podríamos decir que la fe consiste en creer algo que no se ve, que no
es evidente; pero que lo acepto porque alguien digno de crédito, de
confianza, me lo asegura, es decir, Dios. Hay una fe que llamaríamos
humana; por ejemplo, creer en quien es mi mamá, yo no lo pude
testificar porque en ese momento que yo nacía, no sabía nada; pero
me lo han asegurado personas de créditto. Mi misma mamá, mi papá,
mis demás parientes. Luego hay una fe teologal o sobrenatural que
significa creer, por ejemplo, que en una hostia consagrada, en una
misa, ya no hay un pedazo de pan; sino que está realmente Jesucristo. ¿Por qué? Porque Él así lo dijo y yo me fío de Él.
A mí no me interesa saber dónde está la frontera entre una
fe humana y una fe sobrenatural. Lo que sí me interesa saber; y lo sé,
es que ambas funcionan. El que tiene una fe humana suficiente logra

las cosas. Y no se diga del que además tiene la fe sobrenatural.
Como la fe es una total seguridad, con una lógica natural y contundente, así contundente, te forzará a poner los medios necesarios. Te inspirará caminos para obtener resultados, te abrirá los
ojos para encontrar ayudas y encontrar ideas. La fe, de hecho,
estimula todas las facultades del hombre, estimula la imaginación. La fe pone en marcha sobre todo la voluntad, una voluntad tenacísima que no desistirá hasta alcanzar el objetivo. Estas
personas de fe, hacia fuera, hacia los demás, dan la impresión de
ser soñadoras, idealistas y, además, tercas.
¿Cómo se adquiere este hábito de la fe? Repitiendo muchas
veces y con total convencimiento actos de fe, sobre todo en las
cosas que a mí me parecen muy difíciles o de plano imposibles.
Les voy a contar un ejemplo de mi propia experiencia.
En una ocasión yo tenía que viajar a Madrid, partiendo de
México y no pude encontrar boleto. Tenía que pasar por Miami,
revisé materialmente todas las compañías del aeropuerto; y solo
encontré en Pan American un pequeño vuelo hasta Santo Domingo en Puerto Rico. Me dijeron esto: "Usted verá si puede y
cuándo puede salir". Bien, llegué a Santo Domingo y me dirigí a
las reservaciones de vuelos para Madrid. Me dijeron con firmeza: "No hay boleto para Madrid. ¿No le han dicho que tiene
que irse al hotel? La compañía le paga el hotel, no se preocupe."
Yo no me fui al hotel, bajé a la sala de espera donde salía un
avión para Madrid. Hablé con el señor que estaba en el mostrador, y me contestó un tanto molesto: "¿No le han dicho que
tiene que irse al hotel? No, no, no hay ni un solo lugar". Yo no
me fui al hotel, me quedé en la sala.
Motivándome a mí mismo, y haciendo un acto de fe,
de que, aunque era imposible, iba a salir a Madrid. Se vació la
sala. Yo le leía los pensamientos del señor que estaba frente al
mostrador, porque hacían ruido. "Este curita está loco". Yo
luchaba contra mis propios pensamientos, contra todo lo que me
decía: "Efectivamente estás loco, ¿qué haces aquí? Vete al hotel,
te lo han dicho; no hay sitio". Pero yo seguía ahí. Pasaron
quince minutos. A medida que pasaban los minutos, yo sentía
más golpeteo en mi mente: "Vete, estás loco", y más fe tenía de
que iba a salir. A los quince minutos salió por el túnel una persona de uniforme, cruzó unas palabras con el que estaba en el
mostrador; y de repente me dijo: "Padre, ¿Usted está buscando
salir hacia Madrid?", "Efectivamente", le dije - "Pues hay un
lugar aquí, puede usted subir al avión". Curiosamente en ese
avión, en ese vuelo, iba un grupo de setenta gallegos. Generalmente cuando va un grupo compacto es difícil que se pierda
uno. Pues uno, no llegó. Entré al avión. Me acuerdo perfectamente del asiento, me puse el cinturón de seguridad. De seguro
muchas personas pensaron: "¿quién es ése que nos ha hecho
esperar quince minutos?" Ciertamente agradecí mucho aquel
gallego, recé por él, por sí le había pasado algo, pero gracias a
eso llegué a Madrid.
Es un caso curioso si ustedes quieren, un caso donde se
ve claramente que la evidencia era "no hay sitio, no vas a ir a
Madrid, vete al hotel". Y la fe me dijo: "sí hay sitio, vas a ir a
Madrid." Y llegué a Madrid.
Es uno de los tantos ejemplos que podría poner de mi
propia vida, me da un poco pena hacerlo, pero por esos ejemplos
yo he llegado a creer en la fe y a saber que, cuando Cristo pone
ese reto, nos dice la pura verdad.
