Ir (imperfect) + a + infinitive
• Use ir in the imperfect followed by a and the
infinitive of a verb to say what someone was
going to do.
– Mary iba a ir de compras.
• Follow this structure with another verb in the
preterite tense to say what interrupted that
action.
– Mary iba a ir de compras, pero se enfermó.
• Follow the “iba a…” structure with a verb in the
imperfect to describe an ongoing action/state.
– Mary iba a ir de compras, pero no tenía dinero.
