Pouvait-on mieux démarrer le printemps qu’avec le Mexique, qui fête en même
temps le bicentenaire de son indépendance et le centenaire de sa révolution ?
Derrière les clichés du dieu aztèque Quetzalcoatl, de la Vierge de Guadalupe
et du révolutionnaire au sombrero, se révèle, trois mois durant, une nation
riche et complexe qui n’en finit pas d’imaginer sa « mexicanité ». Et si le
Mexique était l’archétype de la nation du futur, organisant depuis deux siècles

Nation of the Future
What better way to start the spring than by marking the bicentenary of Mexico’s
independence and the centenary of its revolution? Behind the clichés of the Aztec
god Quetzalcóatl, the Virgin of Guadalupe, and revolutionaries in sombreros,
you can discover, over three months, a rich and complex nation, constantly
reinventing its “Mexicanness”. Could Mexico, shaped over two centuries by
the creative explosion of an incredible cross-fertilisation, be the archetype of
the nation of the future? Find out at five exhibitions – including a superb Frida
Kahlo collection – and a fascinating multidisciplinary festival.

Mexico on stage !
In Mexico vieren de podiumkunsten hoogtij: barokconcerten,
traditionele muziek, aangrijpende poëzie… Maak kennis met twee
opvolgers van Carlos Fuentes: Jorge Volpi en Paco Ignacio Taibo
II. Zet op 21 maart met het hele gezin jullie mooiste sombrero op
voor het Fiesta en el Palacio. Voorts in april: een uitgelezen selectie
films in aanwezigheid van de makers, plus twee ensceneringen, El
Automovil Gris en El Gallo van topregisseur Claudio Valdes Kuri.
En hoe kunnen we Mexicaanser afsluiten dan met een partijtje
gemaskerd worstelen: lucha libre!

Le 21 mars, vissez vos sombreros en famille avec la Fiesta en el
Palacio. En avril, épinglez une sélection de films en présence de
leurs réalisateurs. Coup de théâtre fin avril avec deux classiques
El Automovil Gris et El Gallo de Claudio Valdés Kuri, réalisateur
mondialement renommé. On ne pouvait achever sans un peu de
catch masqué : la lucha libre !

The performing arts are alive and well in Mexico! The festival
includes concerts of baroque and traditional music, as well as some
moving poetry. Meet Jorge Volpi and Paco Ignacio Taibo II, two
worthy successors to Carlos Fuentes. It’s sombrero time for all
the family on 21 March, with the Fiesta en el Palacio. In April you
can see a selection of films, in the presence of the directors. At
the end of April, it’s time for some theatre, with two classics El
Automovil Gris and El Gallo directed by Claudio Valdés Kuri, the
famous director. And how about a little masked wrestling – lucha
libre – to finish up?
Frida Kahlo y su mundo
Het Mexicaanse (zelf)portret bij uitstek. Frida
Kahlo kijkt met getroubleerde blik het Museo Olmedo
in, de meest omvangrijke (privé)collectie van haar
oeuvre. Negentien schilderijen, een ets, zes tekeningen
en een groot aantal foto’s geven een haarscherp
beeld van Frida Kahlo’s verbluffende bijdrage aan
symbolisme en surrealisme. Maar ook van haar door
rampspoed geteisterde leven: Kahlo werd op haar 17de
slachtoffer van een busongeval en verzeilde van de ene
wankele operatietafel op de andere. Miskramen en een
turbulent huwelijksleven met Diego Riviera, schilderchroniqueur van de revolutie laden haar werk op met
een aparte kracht en schoonheid. Geprangd tussen
levensdrift en de schaduw van de dood: maak kennis
met de echte Frida.

Museo Olmedo, la plus grande collection (privée) des
œuvres de l’artiste. Dix-neuf toiles, une eau-forte, six
dessins et de nombreuses photographies témoignent
de sa contribution magistrale aux mouvements
symboliste et surréaliste. D’une vie aussi, d’emblée
mise à rude épreuve. Victime à 17 ans d’un dramatique
accident d’autobus, sa vie n’aura été qu’une suite
d’interventions chirurgicales à une époque où la
médecine tâtonnait. Plusieurs fausses couches et sa
vie conjugale tumultueuse avec Diego Rivera, peintre
majeur de la révolution, impriment à ses œuvres une
puissance et une beauté singulières. Entre élan de vie
et pulsion de mort, rencontrez la vraie Frida.

The ultimate Mexican (self-)portrait, Frida Kahlo’s
disconcerting gaze stares out from the Museo Olmedo collection, the world’s largest (private) collection
of her work. 19 paintings, an etching, six drawings,
and a number of photographs bear witness to her
brilliant contribution to the symbolist and surrealist
movements. And to her life, a hard one from the outset. A tragic bus accident at just 17 led to a series of
operations throughout her life, at a time when medicine was just feeling its way. Several miscarriages and
a turbulent married life with Diego Rivera, the great
painter of the Revolution, contributed to her works’
power and extraordinary beauty. Meet the real Frida,
with her lust and struggle for life.

L’architecture moderniste au Mexique ne se résume pas qu’à l’œuvre de Luis Barragán, son plus célèbre
représentant. L’exposition présente un vaste panorama de la production architecturale mexicaine d’aprèsguerre, à partir de plans détaillés et d’impressionnants agrandissements photographiques. Une série unique
de films et de documents d’époque complètent cette évocation surprenante des lignes épurées et de la
fonctionnalité brute made in Mexico.
There is more to modernist architecture in Mexico than just the work of Luis Barragán, its most renowned
representative. The detailed plans and impressive enlarged photographs in this exhibition offer a broad
overview of architectural production in post-war Mexico. In addition, a unique series of documentary films and
contemporary documents helps to flesh out this fascination evocation of the refined lines and raw functionalism
of Mexican modernism.

The festival’s major exhibition, Imágenes del mexicano, sums up
the history of Mexico and its quest for identity in 150 portraits.
We see the pre-Columbian period, colonialism, independence, and
our own day through the eyes of Mexican and foreign artists. Portraits
of unknown and famous Mexicans, images of ethnic minorities, and
satirical works illustrate the heritage and aspirations of an everchanging nation. Paintings by Bustos, Rivera, Siqueiros, and Kahlo;
films by Eisenstein; and photographs by Modotti – not just images,
but Mexico itself!
