What is Citizenship Rutgers?
Citizenship Rutgers is a series of free naturalization application assistance drives. The project provides
Legal Permanent Residents (LPRs) access to free individual consultations with experienced immigration
attorneys; knowledgeable, language appropriate application assistance; passport-sized photos;
document certification; citizenship test questions and ESL referrals. The project was created to bring
citizenship application assistance to New Jersey’s 400,000+ Legal Permanent Residents (LPRs).
Citizenship Rutgers fall 2012 application assistance drives will be held on:
Saturday, October 20 (Camden)
Saturday, November 10 (Newark)
Sunday, December 9 (New Brunswick)
Citizenship Rutgers is a project of the Eagleton Institute of Politics - Program on Immigration and
Democracy and its partners: Rutgers Law School-Camden; Rutgers Law School-Newark; the Center for
Migration and the Global City; Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations; and The Bonner
Foundation.
Why is Citizenship Rutgers important?
Democracy is a participatory system and citizenship is the cornerstone of democracy. Citizens vote,
serve on juries, serve in the armed forces, and are the backbone of our workforce. Research shows that
citizens are better integrated into the life of their communities, have higher rates of health insurance
and earn higher incomes. Citizens tend to be more active participants in all aspects of civic life and to
contribute more fully to American society.
There are 12 million legal permanent residents in the United States and more than 400,000 of them
live here in New Jersey. Many legal permanent residents have lived here for decades and dream of
becoming citizens; yet, most have not taken the step toward obtaining citizenship. Some may be
fearful. Others feel too busy. Application fees may deter some. Still others may be discouraged by the
complexities of navigating the complicated legal system.
