Nací en Bogotá, Colombia. Trabajé en un banco durante
diecinueve años y medio pero la compañía se unió al Banco
de Bogotá. Sabía que estaban recortando personal, entonces,
decidí aceptar una negociación con Bancomercio. Con ese
dinero vine a Estados Unidos, con mi ex esposo y mis tres
hijos –el hijo mayor de quince años, la hija de doce años y
el hijo menor de nueve años–.
I was born in Bogota, Colombia. I worked in a bank for nineteen
and a half years but the company merged with the Bank of
Bogota. I knew that they were cutting personnel, so I decided
to accept a negotiation with Bancomercio. With that money,
I came to United States with my ex-husband and my three
children, the older son who was fifteen years old, my daughter
who was twelve and my youngest one who was nine.
Mis hijos fueron a la escuela. Por la falta de inglés los retrasaron
un año. A pesar de eso, ellos iban muy adelantados en materias,
especialmente en matemáticas. Ya íbamos a cumplir los tres
meses cuando apenas nos quedaba un dólar del dinero que
llevábamos. Mi ex esposo consiguió trabajo en una licorería.
Su jefe le recomendó unos apartamentos económicos, de
quinientos dólares con dos alcobas en Weehawken, New Jersey.
Al poco tiempo conseguí trabajo en un supermercado latino.
Vivimos allí durante tres años.
My children went to school, but because they did not speak
English, they were set back a year. In spite of that, they were
very advanced in certain subjects, especially in math. We were
here for three months, and we were down to our last dollar
(of the money we had brought with us) when my ex-husband
obtained work at a liquor store. His boss recommended him
some cheaper apartments at five hundred dollars with two
bedrooms in Weehawken, New Jersey. Shortly after, I found work
in a Latin American supermarket. We lived there for three years.
Nos separamos con mi ex esposo, cambié de trabajo a taxista
para poder pagar una renta en un sitio mejor. Terminando el
bachillerato los dos mayores, mi hija entró al Navy, y mi hijo
mayor entró a trabajar en un restaurante, como mesero y
como bartender. El Navy mandó a mi hija a Mayport y al poco
tiempo trajo a su hermano menor que estaba terminando su
bachillerato. Por esta razón yo también me vine a vivir
con mis hijos a Jacksonville, Florida.
My ex-husband and I got separated. I switched jobs to work as
a cab driver in order to be able to pay for a better place to live.
When my older children finished high school, my daughter
entered the Navy, and my older son started to work in a
restaurant as a waiter and as a bartender. The Navy sent my
daughter to Mayport and shortly thereafter she brought her
younger brother that was finishing high school. For this reason,
I also came to live with my children in Jacksonville, Florida.
Aquí conseguí trabajo en una tienda de cajera. No ganaba
mucho, entonces conseguí otro trabajo en una gasolinera.
Trabajaba ochenta horas a la semana por algún tiempo.
Después, me quedé trabajando en la gasolinera solamente.
A los cuatro años sufrí un accidente de trabajo y la compañía
me echó. Lo supe a los tres meses estando incapacitada.
Luego entré a una tienda donde trabajé por cuatro años.
Nos mudamos para Jacksonville y a partir de esa fecha no
he podido conseguir empleo. Llevo año y medio tratando.
Estoy en Estados Unidos por mis hijos y porque en mi país,
a mi edad, es imposible conseguir trabajo. Yo no me doy por
vencida. Seguiré tratando hasta conseguir un trabajo aquí y
así lograr mi pensión de Estados Unidos. Estoy en trámites de
mi pensión en Colombia ya que allí es a los cincuenta y cinco
años de edad. A pesar de eso, no podría vivir bien en mi país
con el dinero de la pensión, ya que un sueldo mínimo no cubre
todos los gastos mínimos necesarios.
Here I found a job as a cashier. I did not earn enough money,
so I found another job at a gas station. I worked eighty hours
a week for some time. Later, I kept the job at the gas station
only. Four years later, I had an accident at work and the
company laid me off. I found out about it after three months
of being incapacitated. Then, I was hired at a store where
I worked for four years. We moved to Jacksonville and from
then on, I have not been able to obtain employment. I have
been trying for a year and a half. I am in the United States
because of my children, and because in my country, at my age,
it is impossible to obtain work. I will not give up. I will continue
trying until I obtain work here and thus achieve my pension in
the United States. I am in the process of getting my pension in
Colombia since there one can obtain it at the age of fifty-five.
In spite of that, I would not be able to live in my country with
the money from the pension, since a minimum salary does
not cover all the necessary minimum expenses.
