El Ministro de Educación asiste a varias reuniones en Londres y Malta
sobre la Universidad de Gibraltar
Gibraltar, 2 de febrero de 2015
El Ministro de Educación, Gilbert Licudi, volvió la semana pasada de una visita a Malta, donde
asistió a una serie de encuentros relacionados con la Universidad de Gibraltar. Licudi se reunió
con el Catedrático Juanito Camilleri, Rector de la Universidad de Malta, para tratar varias áreas
de colaboración entre las dos universidades, como por ejemplo el área de Estudios del
Mediterráneo, especialidad en la que la Universidad de Malta cuenta ya con un programa muy
exitoso.
Licudi se reunió asimismo con Charles Theuma, Director del Instituto de Educación Superior
St Martins. Esta institución mantiene una larga relación con la Universidad de Londres y ofrece
varias asignaturas en el marco del Programa Internacional de dicha universidad. Se trató de un
encuentro muy provechoso, puesto que la Universidad de Gibraltar tiene entre sus planes
ofrecer programas de la Universidad de Londres.
En el marco de una agenda muy apretada, Licudi se encontró con el Superintendente de
Patrimonio Cultural de Malta, Anthony Pace, y con representantes de la Federación de Centros
de Enseñanza del Inglés de Malta (Federation of English Language Teaching Schools of Malta).
Darren Fa, Director de Programas académicos y de investigación de la Universidad de Gibraltar
también se reunió con Timmy Gambin, profesor de arqueología marina de la Universidad de
Malta.
En su viaje a Malta, Licudi efectuó una visita de cortesía al Ministro de Educación, Evariste
Bartolo.
Antes de viajar a Malta, Licudi acompañado por Ernest Gomez, Secretario Principal, y Joey
Britto, Director de Educación, asistió al Foro Mundial sobre Educación1 (Education World
Forum) en Londres. El foro reúne a ministros de Educación de todo el mundo para debatir
tendencias educativas y forjar relaciones entre las diferentes jurisdicciones en esta materia. La
delegación gibraltareña también asistió a la feria de educación y tecnología BETT2 (British
Educational Training and Technology), durante la cual celebró varias reuniones sobre la
Universidad de Gibraltar, entre las que cabe destacar el encuentro con el Catedrático Julius
Weinberg, Vicerrector de la Universidad de Kingston, para consolidar los lazos ya establecidos
con Gibraltar y estudiar la posibilidad de establecer otros posibles marcos de colaboración
entre la Universidad de Kingston y la Universidad de Gibraltar.

Licudi comentó:
“Todas las reuniones celebradas en Londres y Malta forman parte de la preparación necesaria
para la inauguración de la Universidad de Gibraltar y su futuro desarrollo. Estas reuniones han
permitido intercambiar puntos de vista, así como desarrollar importantes lazos con aquellos
con los que ya se colabora a nivel de Educación Superior. No sólo se nos ha proporcionado un
asesoramiento útil y alentador basado en la experiencia, sino que además nos han mostrado
su voluntad de ayudarnos en todos los aspectos y colaborar en proyectos conjuntos con la
Universidad de Gibraltar. Cuanto más compartimos nuestros planes con otros, más
apasionante se vuelve el proyecto de la Universidad”.
Entretanto, las obras en Europa Point, donde se ubicará la Universidad, ya están tomando
forma. El diseño arquitectónico incluye un amplio atrio que será la característica más
representativa de la Universidad. Este espacio conectará varios edificios históricos mediante
una estructura de cristal y realzará el conjunto.
Tal y como fue anunciado, la Universidad de Gibraltar abrirá sus puertas en septiembre de este
año.

Minister for Education attends meetings in London and Malta on the Gibraltar
University
The Minister for Education, Gilbert Licudi QC, returned last week from a visit to Malta
where he held a series of meetings in connection with the University of Gibraltar. Mr Licudi
discussed with Professor Juanito Camilleri, the Rector of the University of Malta, various
areas of collaboration between the two universities including in the area of Mediterranean
Studies in which the University of Malta already has a very successful programme.
Mr Licudi also met Charles Theuma, the Principal of St Martin’s Institute of Higher
Education. St Martin’s has a long relationship with the University of London and offers a
number of courses as part of the University of London’s International Programme. This was
particularly useful given the existing plans by the University of Gibraltar to also offer
University of London programmes.
As part of a packed itinerary, Mr Licudi met with the Superintendent of Cultural Heritage for
Malta, Dr Anthony Pace, and with representatives of the Federation of English Language
Teaching Schools of Malta. Dr Darren Fa, the University of Gibraltar’s Director of
Academic Programmes and Research, also met with Timmy Gambin, Professor of Marine
Archeology at the University of Malta.
During his trip to Malta, Mr Licudi paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Education,
Evariste Bartolo.
Before travelling to Malta, Mr Licudi, accompanied by Ernest Gomez, Chief Secretary, and
Joey Britto, the Director of Education, attended the Education World Forum in London. The
Forum brings together Education Ministers from all over the world to discuss trends in
education and to forge links between different jurisdictions on educational matters. The
Gibraltar delegation also attended the BETT (British Educational Training and Technology)
exhibition and held a number of meetings on the University of Gibraltar, including a meeting
with Professor Julius Weinberg, the Vice-Chancellor of Kingston University, to consolidate
existing ties with Gibraltar and explore further potential collaborative frameworks between
Kingston University and the University of Gibraltar.

Mr Licudi said:
“All the meetings held in London and in Malta have been part of the preparation necessary
for the opening of the University of Gibraltar and for the future development of the
University. The meetings have allowed an exchange of views as well as the development
of valuable links with those already engaged in Higher Education. We have been provided
not just with useful and encouraging advice based on experience but also with a
willingness to assist us in any way and to collaborate with the University of Gibraltar on
joint projects. The more we discuss our plans with others, the more exciting the University
project becomes.”
In the meantime, work has started to transform the site at Europa Point where the
University of Gibraltar will be housed. The architectural design includes a large atrium
which will be the focal feature of the University. The atrium will link and enhance existing
historic buildings using a glass structure.
As already announced, the University of Gibraltar will open for business in September of
this year.
