CONFESSIONS
Saturday: 3:00-4:30pm & 7:30-8:30pm;
Eve of Holy Day & Thursday before First Friday: 4 -5:00pm
Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Last Sunday's "Good Samaritan" parable concluded
with Jesus' command: Go provide hands-on mercy to
the next person you meet, no conditions, no limits, no
exceptions. But today, Jesus seems to criticize Martha's hands-on mercy of hospitality, while praising
Mary's "hands-off" as "choosing the better
part" (Luke 10:42). Mary sat listening (10:39), leaving Martha "burdened with much serving by herself" (10:40). So, is the contemplative life of prayerful silence "superior," but the active life of earning a
living, raising a family, running parishes, schools,
hospitals, and social service ministries "secondclass" discipleship? No; Jesus' example is not either/
or but both/and: silent communion with God, boundless compassion for people. If we do not seek Jesus
in silent prayer, how will we find Jesus in all others?
If we do not serve Jesus in others, will our worship,
despite its beauty, be anything but empty ritual? This
Jubilee Year of Mercy offers us Jesus' two-fold challenge: both "go and do" and "sit and listen."

WATCH YOUR POSTURE
Our posture is often a tip-off to our hospitality and
reverence for the Lord. Note the actions of Abraham
as he greeted the Lord in the presence of three men
who appeared near his tent. He ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them. He bowed to the
ground as he met them. He and Sarah, his wife, hastened to prepare a meal and bring food and water to
their guests.
In the Gospel story, Jesus' friend Mary sat at his feet
in order to listen to him speak.
How do we welcome and reverence the Lord? What
do our actions show? Do we remember the Lord's
presence in the Blessed Sacrament? How do we welcome the Lord in the scripture readings? How do we
acknowledge his presence in our brothers and sisters, both at Mass and afterwards?
Whether we kneel, stand, or sit in the Lord's presence, may our hearts and minds always be attuned to
him.

MERCY
Among the attributes of God, although they are all
equal, mercy shines with even more brilliance than
justice.

Respect Life Committee ¿SABÍA USTED?
ignorar cualquier banderazo o conducta sospechosa.

RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE
CALIFORNIA’S ASSISTED SUICIDE LAW: ARE
SOME LIVES NOT WORTH LIVING, OR ARE ALL
LIVES PRECIOUS?
Blacks didn’t choose slavery!
Jews didn’t choose genocide!
Babies don’t choose abortion!
Everyone gets a choice but the victim.
At what point can we say that a life no longer matters?
Is it at the point when medical expenses become too costly or burdensome for relatives? Is it at the point when someone feels they
have outlived their usefulness, or are just not able to do the things
they love to do anymore? The assisted suicide law passed by the
California legislature last year, euphemistically titled the “End of Life
Option Act,” takes effect this month. The law makes it legal for doctors to prescribe lethal drugs to patients who qualify: And it’s not
hard to “qualify.” California’s new
law is flagrantly unethical and will have a number of extremely harmful
consequences.
Until all are welcomed in life and protected in law.

DID YOU KNOW?
Constant vigilance goes a long way to protect your
children from predators So much of our society operates on blind trust, and that trust can some mes
lead parents to make the wrong choices when it
comes to the safety of their children. Far too many
predators and abusers hide behind the well-known
and trusted adults. Parents should be vigilant when
introducing anyone into their children’s’ lives, and
should not ignore any red flags or suspicious behavior. It’s be er to inves gate than to misplace
your trust at the expense of your child’s safety. For

CUIDA TU POSTURA
