What to do?
• The future of our healthcare system depends upon
primary care’s ability to improve the quality and
efficiency of its preventive and chronic illness care.
• Improving efficiency begins with clear policies about
what interventions are of value, which are uncertain but
safe, and which are ineffective or unsafe.
• It will also require a recommitment of primary care to
meet the needs of patients for timely, patient-centered,
continuous and coordinated care
• That will require a major transformation or redesign of
practice, not just better reimbursement or more IT.
