IMPORTANT: Concerning the future education of your kids
Dear parents,
It is common knowledge that education is one of the most important keys to a successful future.
Through education, kids are able to grow as human beings and are able to acquire skills that can’t be taught
outside of the classroom. It is no secret that a proper education affords better opportunities and futures. Every
student, regardless of their socioeconomic status, race, gender or the tier they reside in, has the right to a
rewarding education. Students should not be deprived of this right, yet here we are. Budget cuts are ravaging
all kinds of schools: neighborhood schools, selective enrollment schools, magnet schools-- nothing has been
left untouched. It is with that in mind that we, CPS student organizers, earnestly ask for students’ respective
guardians to give permission to students to boycott school on Friday, January 15th in their fight for their future
and a fulfilling education. We will meet up at Dunbar Vocational High School and march from there onwards
to Chicago’s Loop. We encourage parents and allies to join us on our march. Additionally, prior to the
citywide student march, we will be holding a Student Summit on January 9th, which will provide more
information on the complex issues that contribute to CPS’s ongoing budget crisis, and we will be discussing
the citywide student boycott on January 15th.
It has been 40 years since Chicago has seen a united front of students demonstrating their power to
advocate change in Chicago’s public education system. Despite the “change” promised to students after the
1963 boycott, students continue to be used as political leverage. This must end!
Because of the continuous divestment of our school system, we must collectively take a stand to
demand a quality education for students from all parts of Chicago. As our very own CEO, Forrest Claypool,
said, “we are the poorest kids in the state.” The poorest kids that still accomplish and bring world-class
recognition to our city. With a massive teacher lay-off still looming, we must understand how devastating this
will be -- not only for us, but for the families of teachers.
Please encourage your students, friends, and children to attend hopefully the largest student

Students will march from Chicago’s southside to the ‘Loop.’ We believe that by having this boycott near to
when the projected teacher layoff will be announced (and in Chicago's cold weather), it will send a message of
how dedicated and serious we are about the quality of our education.

Estimados padres,
La buena educación es un paso muy importante para obtener un futuro lleno de éxito. En la educación,
estudiantes podrán buscarse sí mismos y conseguir habilidades que sirvan para sus carreras futuras. Todos se
merecen un educación que valeria y les ayude para cuando sevan a clases universitarios. Por eso estamos
pidiendo permiso a cada padre de los estudiantes de chicago que dejen a sus hijos boicotear con nosotros para
conseguir un educación con calidad que todos nosotros nos merecemos y que no nos han dado. Sabado, enero
9 a las 12 p.m tendremos una junta en la Union Hall (cermak y halsted) con más información sobre esta tema
en . El Viernes, enero 15 es cuando vamos a tomar acción y boicotear contra la negligencia. Vamos empezar
en Dunbar Vocational High School a las 10 a.m y caminaremos hasta la “Loop”
Ha sido 40 años desde que los estudiantes de chicago se unieron para demostrar su poder en cambiar
la educación pública de chicago. A pesar del “cambio” prometido a los estudiantes, incluso después del
boicoteo en 1963, estudiantes siguen usados como apalancamientos de políticos. Esto debe de terminar!
Por el continuo de la negligencia de nuestro sistema escullar, es nuestro deber de tomar acción y exigir
una educación con calidad para todos los estudiantes de Chicago. Como dijo Forrest Claypool, “somos los
niños más pobres del estado. Los niños que todavía logran atraer reconocimiento de clase mundial a nuestro
cuidad.” Con una masiva despedida de maestros que todavía nos avecina, necesitamos reconocer que no solo
nos devastan a nosotros sino también a las familias de los maestros.
Por favor ánima a sus estudiantes, amigos, e hijos para atender (ojala) el acción más grande este año

Creemos que haciendo este boicoteo cerca del anuncio de las despedidas de los maestros y la temperatura de
chicago crea un mensaje de que tan dispuestos y serios estamos para obtener una educación de calidad que nos
merecemos.
