First the historical context wherein Luke frames his story, at a specific point and place in time, grounds me in a familiar and ‘real’ time, as opposed to a mythical place in time. This is particular to Luke’s version. The second, and more significant, is the prophetic proclamation to prepare for the coming of the Lord, with the direction to level off and smooth out the rough spots and imperfections, allusion for the work we need to do in our lives. The comforting and hopeful thing is that there is time! Putting oneself in that place just as though Isaiah and John were crying out to us today, I am reminded of a giddy, transformed Scrooge in a Christmas Carol, who, when he wakes Christmas morning, cries out: “I didn't miss it!” There is time to start anew, rework myself, and make straight my path – isn’t that something to rejoice over indeed. And what do we have to do to qualify for this great gift? Only turn from the darkness, and open our hearts to the light. With these great words of encouragement and assurance that our sins will be forgiven, God’s great gift, the Good News, is delivered to the world. We should take from this the understanding that God wants for us to be happy, to lead enriched lives - after all, hasn’t that always been His plan? As we move through the advent season, let us prepare the way for the Lord in our lives, by moving from the darkness and welcoming the light of Christ into our lives.
