On Friday afternoons they always brought a snack to eat. 2 3 When Denise was done with her snack, she always remembered to put the trash into the trashcan. She would also remind Ester how important it is to recycle and not to litter. “It harms the animals and makes our neighborhood look ugly!” Denise would explain. 4 5 But Ester was full of excuses. “My backpack is heavy. My hands are tired. Trash is dirty.” Ester’s favorite excuse was “A little trash doesn’t hurt anyone.” So she said good-bye to Denise and dropped her trash on the grass right outside her house. 6 7 One afternoon, Ester’s dad came home early. “I have a surprise for you!” he said while holding a cardboard box behind his back. Ester opened the box and smiled with delight. It was a kitten! It was round, with gray and white stripes. She named the kitten Sneakers. 8 9 That night, Ester read a story to Sneakers. “I love you so much!” she said as she hugged her. Ester placed Sneakers gently on her bed. “I promise I will take good care of you.” “Prometo cuidarte muy bien.” 10 11 Ester's bedroom window was open that evening. Sneakers crept out to explore. She saw the moon and stars. She heard crickets and other night noises. She even climbed a tree to meet a wakeful squirrel. 12 13 From the tree, Sneakers spotted a shiny object on the grass. It was beautiful and it smelled good too. Sneakers wanted to bring the treasure back to Ester. 14 15 But, when she tried to pick the treasure up, it became stuck on her head. Sneakers couldn't see and it was hard to breathe. The poor kitten cried and meowed as loud as she could. Sneakers no podía ver y era difícil respirar. 16 17 The loud cries woke up everyone in Ester's house. Her dad went out to see what was wrong. When he saw Sneakers, he rescued her from the empty potato chip bag and brought her back inside to Ester. 18 19 "What happened?" asked Ester as she cuddled her kitten. "Someone littered in our yard and Sneakers got stuck," her dad answered. "Even an empty bag of chips can be dangerous for a young animal." Ester felt really sad because she knew it was her trash. She told her dad that she had been littering in the yard. Her dad hugged her and said, "I'm very proud of you for telling the truth. Tomorrow, you can help me clean up all this trash." Mañana, tú me puedes ayudar a limpiar toda esa basura.” 20 21 The next day was Saturday. Ester spent the whole morning cleaning up the yard with her dad. Then, she and Sneakers played all afternoon in the green grass beneath the blue sky. 22 Comprehension Questions , , Preguntas de ComprensiOn This page is dedicated to all the teachers and parents who took the time to provide us with valuable feedback.
