Ways of looking
En este post, vamos a echar un vistazo a una variedad de verbos que son parecidos entre sí y que se pueden traducir como
“ver” o “mirar” pero que tienen usos y significados diferentes aunque muy sutilmente.
Verbos básicos
To see
Traducción: ver
Puedo ver el mar.
I can see the sea.
No veo ninguna diferencia entre lo que dices tú
y lo que dice él.
I don’t see any difference between what you say
and what he says.
No vi a mis primos durante la Navidad porque
estaban de vacaciones en el extranjero.
I didn’t see my cousins over Christmas because
they were on holiday abroad.
To watch
Traducción: ver o mirar (con concentración o con atención), observar
La clave del verbo “to watch” es que implica “con concentración” o “con atención”.
Me gusta ver la televisión por la noche para
desconectar del trabajo.
I like watching (the) television at night to
disconnect from work.
Vimos la obra de teatro asombrados por las
actuaciones de los actores principales.
We watched the play amazed by the
performances of the leading actors.

To look (at)
Traducción: mirar
Definición: echar una mirada
El significado del verbo “to look” cambia en función de la preposición que se utilice con él. Aquí vamos a fijarnos en el que
se utiliza habitualmente para “mirar” – to look (at)
¡No me mires así!
Don’t look at me like that!
¿Puedes mirar este informe y decirme lo que
piensas?
Can you look at this report and tell me what
you think?
Miré hacia atrás pero no vi a nadie.
I looked behind but I didn’t see anybody.
Y para entender la diferencia entre estos tres verbos, utilizaremos en tres ejemplos “la televisión.”
Ayer vi la televisión que han comprado;
¡es muy grande!
Yesterday I saw the television that they’ve bought;
it’s very big!
Ayer vi la televisión; echaban
una película que me gusta mucho.
Yesterday I watched (the) television; they were showing
a film that I like a lot.
Ayer miré la televisión pero no pude
averiguar por qué no funciona.
Yesterday I looked at the television but I couldn’t
work out why it doesn’t work.

Verbos más descriptivos
to glimpse
Traducción: alcanzar a ver, vislumbrar
Definición: ver brevemente o parcialmente
Vislumbré la ardilla corriendo a través de los arbustos. I glimpsed the squirrel running through the bushes.
Alcanzamos a ver a David Beckham por la ventanilla We glimpsed David Beckham through the window
de su coche cuando salió a toda velocidad del estadio. of his car when he sped off from the stadium.
Muchas veces también se puede decir “to catch a glimpse of” en lugar de “to glimpse”, por ejemplo:
I caught a glimpse of the squirrel running through the bushes.
We caught a glimpse of David Beckham through the window of his car when he sped off from the stadium.
Los verbos siguientes son versiones más descriptivas de “to look (at)” así que la traducción básica de todos es “mirar”. Sin
embargo, intentaremos definir cada uno y explicar la diferencia entre ellos.
to glance (at)
Traducción: mirar (brevemente)
Definición: echar una mirada a algo muy brevemente o con prisa.
Él miró (brevemente) su reloj y se dio cuenta de que
iba tarde.

he was running late.
El hombre se fijó en que la mujer atractiva en la barra The man noticed that the attractive woman at the bar
le miraba de hito en hito.

to gaze (at)
Traducción: mirar (larga y fijamente)
Definición: mirar, en el sentido de contemplar, algo distante
Sentada en la playa, miró la puesta del sol deseando
que sus vacaciones nunca acabaran.
Sitting on the beach, she gazed at the sunset wishing
that her holiday would never end.
Los dos amantes se miraban a los ojos como si
pudieran ver el alma del otro.
The two lovers gazed into each other’s eyes as if
they could see each other’s soul.
to stare (at)
Traducción: mirar (fijamente), quedarse mirando, clavarle los ojos, tener los ojos clavados en, mirar con indiscreción
Definición: mirar algo o a alguien, normalmente con los ojos bien abiertos
Él miró el cuadro durante una eternidad.
He stared at the painting for ages.
¡No te quedes mirándole así! ¡Es maleducado!
Don’t stare at him like that! It’s rude!

Traducción: mirar enfurecido (a)
Definición: fulminar a alguien con la mirada
El futbolista miró enfurecido al entrenador después
de ser sustituido.
The footballer glared at the manager after
being substituted.
Él miró enfurecido a su hermana cuando metió
la pata en cuanto a la sorpresa para sus padres.
He glared at his sister when she put
her foot in it regarding the surprise for their parents.
to peep (at)
Traducción: mirar (a hurtadillas)
Definición: mirar rápido y furtivamente
A algunos niños les gusta mirar sus regalos antes de
la Navidad y los buscan por toda la casa.
Some children like to peep at their presents before
Christmas and they look for them throughout the house.
Mi vecino es muy entrometido; siempre mira a
cualquiera que viene a mi casa desde detrás de
sus cortinas.
My neighbour is very nosey; he always peeps at
whoever comes to my house from behind
his curtains.
to peer (at)
Traducción: mirar
Definición: mirar detenidamente, curiosamente o con ojos de miope
Ella abrió cuidadosamente la puerta y miró
detenidamente a sus hijos mientras dormían.
She opened the door carefully and peered at
her children while they slept.
Él miró en la oscuridad con ojos de miope intentando
atisbar las formas delante de él.
He peered through the darkness trying
to make out the shapes in front of him.
Si lees novelas en inglés, seguro que encontrarás estos últimos seis verbos porque se usan para describir mejor, para dar
más vida a la manera de mirar y si los puedes incorporar en tu discurso, también mejorarás tu expresión.
