LABORAL TO OFFER A SEASON OF MOVIES
RELATED TO THE THEMES AND AREAS OF
RESEARCH OF THE ART CENTRE
LABoral will offer a recurrent season of movies related to the themes and
areas of research of the Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial. The season
will open in conjunction with the exhibition El pasado en el presente y lo
propio en lo ajeno [The past in the present and the foreign in the self].
The films will be shown in the LABcine of the Centro de Arte on the
weekends during the month of May. It was put together by the Gijón
International Film Festival, including various works by Asturian artists
dealing with the relation between memory and territory.
In the words of Jose Luis Cienfuegos, director of the festival: “Moving
images have revolutionised the concept of 'memory,' of 'testimony,' of
'traces of the real...' Organised by José Luis Cienfuegos and Fran Gayo
from the Gijón International Film Festival, the movie season is a small
illustrative sample that reflects the far from coincidental fact that, in
Asturias, we have reflected profoundly on our history. These are
cinematographic explorations that delve deeply into the shifting sands of
memory, explored by film makers whose inspiration is far from that of
academic formalism. As ever, embracing heterodoxy, the programme
includes different national and international cinematic works, such as S21. La máquina roja de matar [S-21: The Khmer Rouge Death Machine] by
Rithy Panh”.
The films pertaining to El pasado en el presente y lo propio en lo ajeno
will begin being shown on Friday, May 8th, with L´Escaezu. Recuerdos del
37 [L'Escaezu: Memories of 1937] directed by Lucía Herrera and Juan Luis
Ruiz, which collects the memories and losses of "children of war" who, in
1937, were forced to flee Asturias as the growing civil strife worsened.

SERIES AUTO.SUEÑO Y MATERIA [AUTO. DREAM AND MATTER]

The film season Auto-Movies was conceived by Albeto Martín, curator of
the exhibition Auto. Sueño y materia which begins this upcoming May
13th in the Emilio Alarcos Llorach theatre of the Film Library (Filmoteca) of
Asturias, on the grounds of the State Public Library of Oviedo.
The series has a popular character and offers multiple perspectives on the
world of the automobile and the different ways it has been treated by the
cinematographic arts. In the words of the exhibition's curator, Alberto
Martín: “The eight films selected here do not pretend to exhaust all the
ways in which this subject has been treated on the big screen, nor is it a
general overview. Instead, it is an independent analysis that is
complemented by and that forms part of the global context of the
exhibition. In fact, a relationship with the cinema also forms part ofm
some of the works of art presented in the exhibition Auto. Sueño y
materia, such as, for example: the famous high speed chase through the
streets of San Francisco in Bullitt, which is taken up again by Chip Lord in
his work Movie Map, the presence of the Jaguar in dvarious movies,
which is the theme of the video Product Placement by Koen Wastijn, or
Noviembre 1963 by Ange Leccia, which reuses fragments of Le mépris
[Contempt] by Godard”.
The films that form part of the Auto-Movies series will be shown in the
Asturias Film Library during the months of May and June and in the Gijón
drive-in theatre in the month of July. With this new initiative of a season
of out-bound movies, at a time when movie theatres have almost
disappeared from city centres, LABoral wants to contribute to the
promotion of cinematographic art and culture in public spaces, in
collaboration with Asturian cinematographic institutions.
