THE EGYPTIAN ARTIST SHADY EL NOSHOKATY
TO PRESENT THE WORKS OF ART HE HAS
COMPLETED DURING HIS RESIDENCY IN
LABORAL TOMORROW IN THE CINELAB
SHADY EL NOSHOKATY WILL DRAW HIS RESIDENCY IN THE CENTRO DE
ARTE Y CREACIÓN INDUSTRIAL TO A CLOSE WITH A PUBLIC
PRESENTATION OF THE WORKS OF ART HE HAS COMPLETED DURING
HIS STAY IN GIJÓN.
In the artist’s own words: “My residency in LABoral has given me the
opportunity to get to know a new culture, its customs, its art and its
people. I think that the key to artist residencies is working with the new
context in which one finds oneself; I, personally, enjoy doing it.”
The works of art to be presented tomorrow are of the video-creation
category and deal with themes related to his experiences as a resident at
LABoral and a visitor to the city of Gijón. This is the case, for example, in
the art work entitled 20 Locations For One Dream in Gijón [20 escenarios
para un sueño en Gijón], a journal project based in Shady’s personal diary
that consists in a video-installation with twenty channels recorded in
twenty different locations in Gijón, combining surrealist images, audio and
a luminous red sign.
He will also present his work in collaboration with the Asturian artist
Pablo de Soto entitled STAMMER (Shady = Pablo), a series of three videos
dealing with the topic of the artists’ two mother tongues (Spanish and
Arabic, respectively). Next month, Pablo de Soto will travel to the
Townhouse Gallery in El Cairo to complete the artist in residence
exchange programme between LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación
Industrial and the Townhouse Gallery of Contemporary Art in Egypt.
This programme was possible thanks to the collaboration of the Ministry
of External Affairs with LABoral and, more specifically, through the
Spanish Embassy in Egypt.

Shady El Noshokaty (Damietta, 1971) is an established artist in Egypt. His
work has been exhibited in a variety of international venues such as the
Venice Biennale, the Institut du Monde Arabe and the Pompidou Centre
in Paris, the Kunstmuseum in Bonn, the Tate Modern and the Hayward
Gallery in London, amongst others. He is a member of the organisational
committee of the Cairo Biennale that is to be held this year.
