Observation
As a science teacher, observation is at the heart of what I do.
I think my job is observation.
Seeing more of your surroundings, makes you more aware of the bigger picture.
Kids start observing their surroundings at a very early age, and that's a good sign.
Once students start observing and you give them kinda lenses with which to observe the world,
they're so eager to see what's going on in their daily lives.
And once they connect, then only they will have a feeling that they want to see it because that
belongs to them, and is theirs. That is something that they grew up watching, and they can't
live without it.
Usually when I go out in nature, the first thing I see is flowers and then when I look deeper in I
see little insects.
We found this toad down there, and people were like, come down, come look, look. So I went
over and looked. It was green with black spots on the back.
I led the habitat walk, where we basically just went along the highway and I pointed out
different habitats, like the salt marsh, or the bay.
I call it research, and photography, and documentation. My job is observation.
We have to be aware of what's going on around us if we want to learn from it, if we wanna
make change in it.
I think it's one of the privileges that you really can have these days. Anyone can go to a National
Park or out to a forest near their house and just explore.
