BELÉN ROJAS June 18, 2024 Essay about the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) The Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) was founded on October 1, 2003. It is located in over 100 countries around the globe, and the Headquarters is based in Tokyo, Japan. The main objective of this organization is “to contribute to the promotion of international cooperation as well as the sound development of Japanese and global economy by supporting the socioeconomic development, recovery or economic stability of developing regions” (JICA). The organization works strategically with governments and other relevant stakeholders in each country in order to achieve the goals more effectively. The JICA global agenda focuses in 20 thematic issues. Here in Paraguay, the office is chaired by Mr. TANAKA Akihiko since April 1, 2024. The types of assistance provided for Paraguay are technical cooperation, financial assistance, and grassroots projects, and are focused in the following key areas: • Agriculture and Rural Development: One of JICA’s primary areas of focus in Paraguay has been agriculture, given its significance in the country’s economy. With projects such as “Proyecto de desarrollo rural integrado en Paraguay: Hacia el desarrollo del agroturismo Fase 2”. • Infrastructure Development: This area has had a significant impact in Paraguay. With projects such as “El Proyecto de Adquisición de los Equipos de Dragado para Rio Paraguay”. • Education and Human Resource Development: Recognizing the importance of education in national development, currently with the project “Asesor para la Promoción de la Participación social de las Personas con Discapacidad - Fase 2”. • Health and Medical Care: In order to enhance the accessibility and quality of healthcare services, with the project “Asesor para el Mejoramiento de la Nutrición”. JICA has played a crucial role in Paraguay’s development journey throughout the past years. Through its comprehensive and multifaceted approach, JICA has not only contributed to immediate improvements in various sectors of the country but has also laid the foundation for long-term sustainable development. The collaboration between Japan and Paraguay through JICA exemplifies how international cooperation can lead to mutual growth and prosperity, setting a precedent for other nations to follow.
