In Colombia in recent years the tourist activity of bird watching has been carried out
successfully, and it has been released from the promotion of the region as a tourist
destination. Here in the Coffe Axis region is a constantly growing tourist activity and is
carried out in rural areas. Also, in recent years there has been a dilemma for young people
in rural areas when choosing between countryside or city?, opting in the end for the option
of migrating to the city, abandoning its territory and cultural identity. According to the Latin
American and Caribbean Demographic Center in its 2017 study, 30% of the country’s
inhabitants lived in rural areas and, according to estimates for 2050, only 13% of
Colombians will continue to do so (Semana Rural, 2019). This project will impact 15 young
people where they acquire tools to develop a profession in the rural area as a future bird
watching guide, so that they contribute to the economic development of the municipality.
Beneficiaries:
Direct Beneficiaries
Indirect Beneficiaries
This project is aimed to 15 young people in
the rural or urban sector of the municipality
of Buenavista who range from the ages of 14
to 28 years with an education level not
higher than basic secondary.
15 families (60 people), friends (257 young
people from the municipality), and people
from their social environment (988
inhabitants of the municipality). According
to Dane, 2018.
Activities to Develop: (800 Characters)
The project was developed with the following modules for 9 months (distributed for one session
per week from 2 to 3 hours)
● Recognition of its regional environment: history of the population of its territory, uses and
use of natural resources, analysis of flora and fauna and family history.
● Birds’ immersion: introduction to birds’ generalities regarding their anatomical aspects and
reproduction and their classification into the avifauna of Colombia.
● Ecosystems and habitat: We define what is an ecosystem, characteristics and behavior of
birds in it.
● Citizen science: we learn from citizen science in bird watching and management platforms
for conservation.
● Bird watching tools: Use of equipment used in bird watching.
● Technique in nature photography: introduction to the visual disposition to the image; The
technique: light, subject, composition, distances, depth of field; Corporality and attitude;
cameras and lenses.

According to a 2016 study by the Conservation Strategy Fund and Audubon, it is estimated
that bird watching could generate up to 8,500 jobs in rural areas in Colombia. This is due
to the potential of the country to occupy for 5 consecutive years the first place in record of
species numbers; however, we found a failure in the training of the personnel to supply
this demand. We have chosen an incipient municipality in nature tourism as Buenavista to
generate in young people new skills for life as future "Ecotourism guides" that can apply in
their free time generating an economic benefit for them and their families, while fostering
in each person a sense of belonging to this territory and towards preservation. To achieve
this, we initially required teaching a correct introduction to bird watching as a profession
and then generating partnerships with other companies to generate job opportunities in
bird watching.
