Scope and purpose of this slide set
 This presentation is for presence based training purpose only.
 The slides are not self learning material, it is intended that a Bosch professional
trainer explains and gives additional information while going through the topics
step by step.
 The included hands on exercises and live demo scenarios require a test system
based on the specific Bosch Video Management System version as covered in the
training.
 All information and screenshots may be subject of change.
 The slides describe important topics from learning point of view but do not reflect all features and functions of the
Bosch Video Management System. The slides are not part of the product catalog and do not replace the
individual manuals (e.g. Configuration or Operation manuals) which can be found on: www.boschsecurity.com

What is iSCSI …?
iSCSI is the marriage of two protocols
 Small Computer System Interface (SCSI)
 Internet Protocol (IP)
Developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
All Bosch encoders and cameras are equipped with an iSCSI Initiator
implementation as defined by RFC specifications.

VRM facts. One VRM server does the following
Manages the cameras: up to 2000
 Provides blocks to the cameras
 Make sure enough blocks are given
to the cameras for independent
recording up to 7 days
Manages the storage:
 up to 4 Petabyte of storage (net capacity)
 up to 120 iSCSI storage targets
(recommended 40)
Manages the recording bandwidth:
 Balances automatically the video stream
load of the cameras across the different
iSCSI storage targets
 Uses the available storage most efficiently
VRM offers flexibility and scalability: Easy expansion of cameras and storage in the system

Bosch VRM versus Recording servers from other vendors

Other VMS: Recording servers concepts (non Bosch) 1/2
1. Rec. pulls the Video from the camera
2. Rec. Server pushes the video to the storage
Rec. Server 1
LAN
Rec. Server 2
Rec. Server 3
3. Live video is
Rec. :
pulled from Rec. Server

Fixed assignment of cameras to a dedicated Rec. Server
(assumption: no multicast network)

Bandwidth and number of camera are limited on each Rec. Server
Why? Because the video stream passes the Rec. server for recording (+live)
Live View Client

Not expandable: more cameras mean more Rec. Servers

Higher initial investment because more servers are required

Storage capacity is fixed by allocation to one Rec. Server, no flexible sharing of storage on demand

Other VMS: Recording server concepts (non Bosch) 2/2
Rec. Server 1
Standby 1
Rec. Server 2
Standby 2
Rec. :

A single point of failure (sits always between camera & storage system)

Server redundancy feature to be ordered on top:

N+1 redundancy: Invest in one more server

One additional Rec. Server HW “waits” in hot or cold standby

When one active Rec. Server fails the additional Rec. Server can take over

N+N redundancy: Invest in double amount of servers

Higher operational costs for all servers: Operating systems, HW to maintain, etc.

Video Recording via iSCSI
Cameras
iSCSI Target (Storage)
One VRM manages up to 2000 cameras without the need of several Rec. Servers

Reduces hardware costs (# of servers) and installation costs

Reduces operational costs: power, cooling and rack space requirements

Increases reliability for recording: no single point of failure

Resilience: Recording continues up to 7 days, even during VRM unavailability

BVMS - Technical Essentials
Summary Module 2: Basic interaction of system components
 Live Stream of cameras is sent directly to the Operator Clients (without a server in-between)
 Recording:
 Cameras are recording directly on the iSCSI storage (without a server in-between)
 The Video Recording Manager does not process any video data, it manages recordings and replay
 Resilience: Recording continues up to 7 days, even during VRM unavailability
 Playback:
 Replay video data is fetched from the iSCSI storage by the VRM and forwarded to the Operator Client
(Default BVMS configuration)
 Alternatively replay video data can be fetched directly by the Operator Client from the iSCSI storage after
consulting the VRM about the exact storage location
 Resilience: Limited replay is possible, even during VRM unavailability. Why?
 The camera remembers the location on the iSCSI storage of the last 32 blocks of recordings
BVMS: An outstanding VMS architecture on the market!
