EL Civics is a program that helps people who are new to the United States. You are going
to study some EL Civics lessons. These lessons will help you connect learning English with
your life, and the lessons will reflect your experiences as a community member, parent,
and participant in the workforce. This student activity packet contains two tasks that you

What are the important places in your community? Where do you go for food, to mail packages,
to get help?
Ask and answer the questions with a partner or group. Then talk about them with your teacher
and the class.

MINI LESSON: What is N/A?
Sometimes you are asked for information that is not available, or that you don’t have.
For example, if a paper asks you for a middle name, and you don’t have one. When you don’t
have the information, or it’s not true for you, you write N/A. This means Not Applicable or
Not Available.
Look at the example:
Rosa Torres needs to fill out a form for the doctor. She doesn’t have a middle name. Here is
what she writes:
First name: Rosa
Middle name: N/A
Last name: Torres
She doesn’t have a middle name, so she writes N/A. She understands the question, but it’s Not
Applicable to her!
Another example:
Mohammed is reading the flyer for the Health Clinic:
Question: What is the website? Answer: N/A (the information is not there; Not Available).

INTRODUCTION: Getting Help
In the previous lesson, we looked at places in the community that can help people with many
kinds of services.
In this lesson, we will look at problems that people have, and where they can get help for
problems, or the services they need.
Talk about these examples with your class:
