Homework week 18 Student: john doe Teacher: dunno Grade:11th grade Date:01-02-2021 Chapter 14 In this chapter, uncle tom is in a boat to New Orleans because he is going to be sold and in the boat, he makes a friendship with Evangeline (the daughter of a wealthy young man named Augustine St. Clare) whom he saves from drowning after she falls from the boat they were. The next day Augustine buys Uncle Tom because Evangeline wanted to make Uncle Tom happy. Chapter 15 It is explained that Augustine is the son of a wealthy Louisiana planter and has never enjoyed the “real” side of life he is romantic and sensitive by nature and seeks pleasure and drinks to forget his one true love while staying married to his unaffectionate, spoiled and selfish wife. Augustine was on the boat because his cousin Ophelia was moving from New England to help run his household because his actual wife is a hypochondriac and so self-centered that she cannot do the things she is supposed to do as a mom and landowners wife. Some background in Ophelia is given and she is described as a respectable 45-year-old spinster that comes from a respectable family and has all the faculties that the carefree Augustine doesn’t have but she always has loved her cousin and was happy to help out keep everything from going to the ruin. As they arrive Uncle tom and Ophelia are a little impressed to see the mansion and Eva rushes to greet her mother who hardly bothers to react while Eva greets her servants and is especially joyful to see her nanny whom she kisses. Augustine introduces Tom to Marie as their new coachman and Marie slanders uncle tom. Chapter 16 A few mornings later a breakfast conversation reveals just how self-absorbed Marie is as she talks about the burden of having slaves and complaining about nonsense and that she has to suffer in silence. After Augustine and Eva depart from the house Ophelia is left to hear Marie’s nonsense and almost has to knit furiously to avoid saying or doing something that she would regret. And later after Augustine returns and hears the stuff Marie is saying and Ophelia talks about treating slaves like human beings and those points are expressed for a while for several minutes without anyone winning. The next scene is Sunday morning and all the females go to church while Augustine stays when they sit for dinner after church Marie talks about the sermon which seems to justify slavery and that makes Augustine start slandering organized religion. Chapter 17 The story comes back to Eliza, George, and Harry in the Halliday house where they are doing final preparations to escape and George pledges to finally give himself over to the level of Christianity which Eliza approaches life. When Phineas Fletcher arrives he says tells them about the trackers that will persuade them but George announces he won't hesitate to shoot if necessary while Eliza and George continue the serious conversation and Simeon offers biblical counseling and after that, they have their last meal together. Many hours later Michael Cross warns them about a crown of men on horseback the wagon races to a sheltered spot and everyone leaps out to climb rocks to safety as the pursuers arrive with tom locker at the head. He and a constable demand they give up but they refuse and George warns that he won't hesitate to fight for liberty the fight starts and Tom Locker climbs and George shoots him but Tom wounded continues. So Phineas pushes him into a chasm and the men are left to rescue tom. The escapees leave and wait for a wagon and they finally come and they all determine to load a wounded Tom Locker on the back to take him to a healing woman named Dorcas who lives with one of the men with them and within an hour the group arrives safe and sound to the farmhouse. Chapter 18 We return to the St. Clare household where uncle tom has been given more charge of the household finances trusted for his ability to handle money tam has gotten the spending of Augustine and Adolphus under control and is troubled by the lack of faith of Augustine and his excessive drinking and after finding him one night particularly intoxicated Tom cries as he begs him to stop drinking and gets the word of Augustine to stop drinking. And in her realm of the household, Ophelia managed to put everyone in line and she is horrified by the conditions of the slaves as they are beaten regularly and wish to die, drink and try to escape and there was this slave that sells bread and uses part of the money made to buy liquor and gets beaten for it her name is pure and she said she drunk and will always drink to escape her memories when she was used as a breeding animal all of her babies were sold except one that died because she didn’t have any breast milk and couldn’t buy it either. Tom meets Prue and tries to reform her but fails as she is too far gone and he shares this story with Eva who is deeply wounded by this story. Vocabulary 1. 2. 3. 4.
