October 4 Modals of Possibility Modals of possibility show that something is possible now or might happen in the future. Modals of possibility include might, could, and may. Might, could, and may have the same meaning. Might and could are common. Use either one. May is more formal and not often used nowadays. MODAL OF POSSIBILITY Examples MIGHT She might get a new puppy. COULD John could be late. MAY They may go to the party later. The adverb maybe is often used to show possibility. We usually use maybe at the beginning or end of a sentence. Compare the adverb maybe with the modal may. •Maybe she is sick today. •She may be sick today. •Maybe they have a cat. •They may have a cat. We use could not to show past ability, not possibility. • Nina could not go to the party. (Past ability – We know she didn’t go.) • Nina might not go to the party. (Possibility – We don’t know if she’ll go or not.).
