inicio de la Guerra de la Independencia.

son un fiel reflejo de lo que sucedió
un 2 de mayo, hace 200 años, en
las calles de Madrid, cuando el pueblo desarmado se levantó contra la
invasión de las tropas napoleónicas.
El alzamiento supuso el inicio de la
Guerra de la Independencia, una
contienda que se alargó hasta 1814.
Para conmemorar el 200 aniversario de uno de los episodios más
importantes de la historia de
España, la Comunidad de
Madrid ha preparado una
extensa programación articulada en cuatro líneas de
actuación: exposiciones;

scheduled an extensive list of activities that is divided into four areas:
exhibitions; shows and public representations; theatre, music, dance
and cinema, and publications. Let
us introduce the creators of these
activities below.
1 FERNANDO Gª DE CORTÁZAR.
All of the activities that are to take
place have to have his signature on
them, as the Community of Madrid
has officially named him director of
the Dos de Mayo Foundation,
Nation and Freedom, which was
created to organize all of the commemorative events for the bicentennial and to further the knowledge
of the historical events that took
place among the general public.
García de Cortázar is a writer and a
Professor of Contemporary History.
He is the one in charge of spreading
the values of freedom and patriotism that the people of Madrid
defended 200 years ago. Furthermore, the Foundation was conceived as an ongoing project and will

Contemporánea, García de Cortázar es el encargado de difundir en
la sociedad los valores de patriotismo y libertad que defendieron los
madrileños hace 200 años. Además, la fundación nace con vocación de continuidad, ya que también será la encargada de preparar
la celebración del Bicentenario de
la Constitución de Cádiz de 1812.

Desde el 26 de abril se podrá visitar en el Centro Arte Canal la exposición ‘Madrid 2 de mayo 18082008. Un pueblo, una nación’, comisariada por el escritor, periodista
y miembro de la Real Academia
Española Arturo Pérez-Reverte. La
exposición –que contará con un sistema de proyecciones audiovisuales– propone un viaje a través del
tiempo para recrear los hechos que
se sucedieron desde las primeras
horas del 2 de mayo de 1808 hasta
la madrugada del día siguiente en
las calles de la capital española. Además, Pérez-Reverte es el autor de
‘Un día de cólera’, una novela que
narra ese episodio histórico a través
de la mirada de sus protagonistas.

These are not the only events that
will commemorate the 200 years of
May second. As of September, the
‘Proclamations and Bans of the War
of Independence’ exhibit can be seen

Francisco José de Goya. In April visitors can see ‘Goya in Times of War’,
an exhibit that evolves around his

May 3rd of 1808. The celebrations
will also take to the big screen. José
Luis Garci is prepairing a film about
the events that the citizens of Madrid
lived through on May 2nd after
Napoleon’s troops entered Spain.
200 years later, the spirit of rebellion and freedom that spread
among the people of Madrid
once again
hits the streets of this
city through
its stages
and exhibition halls.
