2016 - 2017
Greetings from your Kimberlin librarian, Ms. Hauptfuehrer, and Mrs. Murphy, our library aide. We are both looking
forward to another wonderful year in the Kimberlin Library (a.k.a. the Pamela J. Gilmour Memorial Media Center.)
Check out – It is our hope here at Kimberlin that our library will be a haven of learning for your children and they will
love our books. As in the past, students will typically visit the library as a class once a week during which time books may
be checked out. The day of the week your child is scheduled to come to the library with his/her class is considered your
child’s “LIBRARY DAY.” Books may be checked out at other times throughout the week, but they are always due to be
returned or rechecked on “LIBRARY DAY!” Please help your children remember to have their library books with them as
they enter the library with their class. A record is kept each week with names of students who do not return books during
their scheduled time. This record is used to help determine students who will receive end-of-year Library certificates.
Caring for our books – Please discuss proper book care with your children. We take pride in the fact that although our
library may be small in space, we have one of the best elementary library collections in the district.
Because we are
fortunate to receive many new books throughout the school year, it is important that all students learn to take care of the
books they check out. Please emphasize to your children that with the privilege of checking out books comes the
responsibility of taking care of them and returning them on time so other students can also enjoy them. Please note that
books that are damaged while in the care of students are subject to fines according to district guidelines. It is important
that before any books leave the library, students relate any previous damages to Ms. Hauptfuehrer or Mrs. Murphy so
they are not fined for something someone else did. By alerting us to any damage in advance, we can quite often repair it
before things get worse. Sometimes we can even save books that have water damage if we know about it right away. In
the unfortunate event that a book is damaged at home, please return it to the library as soon as possible so that we can
repair it. Of course, we do understand that accidents occur, and at times a book is beyond repair or is lost. In these
cases, the books must be paid for in full.
Online Resources – Be sure to investigate and use the wealth of information available to all of our G.I.S.D. students.
Online resources may be accessed from school or from home at http://library.garlandisd.net.
eBooks – Kimberlin Library has available to students several eBooks that can be read from the computer. To see the many
titles, in the search bar from the Kimberlin catalog just type in ebook and press enter. If you choose to read one of the
books from Capstone, simply click onto the title scroll to the link “Kimberlin Academy Read the Capstone Interactive eBook
Now!” and click. For those located on the Follett Shelf, use garlandisd for the username and gisd for the password. If the
book is one from ABDO, the username is kimbe444-ad with the password abdo.
Volunteers – In the past, Kimberlin has been fortunate to have had many fabulous library volunteers. Anyone who is
available to help out on a regular basis is more than welcome to become a library volunteer. There is a variety of neverending jobs to be done. One of our biggest needs is for helpers to cover paperback books with clear contact paper, and we
will show you how to do this….no experience is necessary! Just stop by in person or email me if you are interested in
helping. [email protected] Please fill out the volunteer online application, because a district background check is
necessary for anyone who volunteers in our school.
Makerspaces – Makerspaces are designed to promote problem solving, critical thinking, and student-directed learning.
They provide students with challenging, creative activities which allow them to feel a sense of accomplishment and pride
when they engage in cooperative groups, show leadership while teaching and helping peers, and complete a project on their
own without adult direction (only adult supervision.) Students have a great choice with activities that interest them,
stretch their thinking and imagination, and excite them to learn.
I am looking forward to another year of exciting learning activities with our Kimberlin students. I hope each and every one
of them learns to love the library; that is, if they don’t love it already!

Alquilar Libros - Es nuestra esperanza aquí en Kimberlin que nuestra biblioteca será un paraíso de aprendizaje para sus hijos y
que les encantará nuestros libros. Como en el pasado, los estudiantes visitarán la biblioteca con su clase una vez a la semana
durante la cual los libros pueden ser alquilados. El día de la semana que su hijo está programado para ir a la biblioteca con su clase
es considerada su "DÍA DE LA BIBLIOTECA." Los libros se pueden alquilar en otras ocasiones durante la semana, pero siempre se
deben a ser devueltos o alquilados de nuevo el "DÍA DE LA BIBLIOTECA!" por favor, ayuden a sus hijos para que recuerden de
traer sus libros con ellos cuando entran a la biblioteca con su clase. Se mantiene un registro cada semana con los nombres de los

Cuidando Nuestros Libros - Por favor discute cómo cuidar adecuadamente a un libro con sus hijos. Tomamos orgullo en el
hecho de que a pesar de que nuestra biblioteca es pequeña, tenemos una de las mejores colecciones de libros primarias en el
distrito. Como tenemos la suerte de recibir muchos nuevos libros durante el año escolar, es importante que todos los estudiantes
aprenden a cuidar los libros que alquilan. Por favor discute con sus hijos que con el privilegio de sacar libros viene la
responsabilidad de cuidar los y devolverlos a tiempo para que otros estudiantes también disfruten de ellos. Tenga en cuenta que los

Makerspaces - Makerspaces son actividades diseñadas para promover la resolución de problemas, el pensamiento crítico y el
aprendizaje dirigido por el estudiante. Los alumnos realizan actividades desafiantes y creativas que les permiten sentir una
sensación de logro y orgullo cuando se involucran en grupos cooperativos, mostran su liderazgo mientras que enseñan y ayudar a sus
compañeros, y cuando lleven a cabo un proyecto por su propia cuenta sin la dirección del adulto (sólo supervisión de un adulto ). Los
estudiantes tienen una gran variedad de actividades que les interesa, expanda su pensamiento y la imaginación, y los excita para
aprender.
Tengo muchas ganas de tener otro año de emocionantes actividades de aprendizaje con nuestros estudiantes Kimberlin. Espero que
todos y cada uno de ellos aprende a amar la biblioteca; es decir, si no lo hacen ya!
