I Am a Citizen of Heaven
Yo Soy Ciudadano del Cielo
“But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the
Lord Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 3:20)
“En cambio, nosotros somos ciudadanos del cielo, de donde
anhelamos recibir al Salvador, el Señor Jesucristo” (Filipenses 3:20).
The people who lived in the city of Philippi enjoyed all the rights of
being legitimate Roman citizens and the pleasures that came with it.
The city was located in Northern Greece and, after being conquered by
the Romans, was rebuilt and the population granted Roman
citizenship. Paul used this as an analogy to remind Christians that we
are citizens of the world by nature, but by grace we are now “citizens”
of heaven. Consider these comparisons:
La gente de la ciudad de Filipos disfrutaba de todos los derechos de la
ciudadanía romana y de los placeres que la acompañaban. La ciudad se
ubicaba en el norte de Grecia y después de ser conquistada por los
romanos se reconstruyó y a la población se le otorgó la ciudadanía
romana. Pablo utilizó este hecho como una analogía para recordarles a
los cristianos que somos ciudadanos del mundo por naturaleza pero ahora
por gracia somos ciudadanos del cielo. Considera las siguientes

The Philippians didn’t have to pay anything to be Roman citizens, not
even taxes. Christians don’t have to pay for our heavenly citizenship
either. “…but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”
(Romans 6:23b).
Los filipenses no tenían que pagar nada para ser ciudadanos de Roma, ni
aun impuestos. Los cristianos tampoco tienen que pagar nada por su
ciudadanía celestial. “… mientras que la dádiva de Dios es vida eterna en
Cristo Jesús, nuestro Señor” (Romanos 6:23b).
As citizens of Rome, the Philippians were its representatives. In much
the same way, Christians are representatives of heaven. “We are
therefore Christ's ambassadors” (2 Corinthians 5:20).
Como ciudadanos de Roma, los filipenses eran sus representantes. De
igual manera, los cristianos son representantes del cielo. “Así que somos
embajadores de Cristo” (2 Corintios 5:20).
The Roman emperors took the title “savior” for themselves, and all
Roman citizenry was under their protection. Our Savior is Jesus Christ
in whom we have eternal life. “…our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has
destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through
the gospel” (2 Timothy 1:10).
Los emperadores romanos se adjudicaban el título de “salvadores” y
toda la ciudadanía romana estaba bajo su protección. Nuestro salvador es
Jesucristo en quien tenemos vida eterna. “...nuestro Salvador Cristo
Jesús, quien destruyó la muerte y sacó a la luz la vida incorruptible
mediante el evangelio” (2 Timoteo 1:10).
Roman citizenship provided the opportunity to enjoy all the good
things in this life. Heavenly citizenship not only allows us to enjoy this
life as no unbeliever ever could but also to understand that this world
is just a sample of what is in store for us in heaven. “I came that they
may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10).
La Ciudadanía Romana les daba la oportunidad para disfrutar de todo lo
que la vida mundana (de pecado) les podía ofrecer. La ciudadanía
celestial no solo permite que disfrutemos de los placeres de este mundo,
sino que entendamos que el mundo solamente es una muestra de lo que
nos espera en el cielo. “Yo he venido para que tengan vida, y la tengan en
abundancia” (Juan 10:10).
Final Thought - The challenge is living in such a way that is worthy
of representing heaven. “…of whom the world was not worthy”
(Hebrews 11:38a). In what ways do your conduct and speech need to
change in order to better reflect the fact that you represent Jesus Christ
as a citizen of heaven?
Pensamiento Final – El reto es vivir de tal manera que sea digno de
representar al cielo. “¡El mundo no merecía gente así!” (Hebreos
11:38a). ¿Cuáles son las cosas que tendrías que cambiar para reflejar de
mejor forma que eres representante de Jesucristo como ciudadano del
cielo?

God saves them.
