At South, We Read!! Every English 1 student will read a book during the summer months. Students may choose
the book they will read, considering these guidelines:
 The book must be “new reading” for the student, not a book that has been read before.
 The book must be appropriate for the student’s reading level / grade level.
 The student must prepare a one-page write-up on the book. This should include the following:
 a brief summary of the plot and what can be learned from the story
 choose a character and explain what you liked or did not like about him or her
 two significant quotes with MLA style citations, and why you chose each quote
 Advanced English students will be required to write a two-page write up on the book that includes all of the
above and the following:
 Explain themes present in the novel, and why their book meets advanced level reading
This is due by the end of the first week of school.
