AROUNDTOWN Tempranillo Takes the Day 2011 Award Winners Announced BY KRISTEN BIELER 1 H eld in the United States for the first time, New York City celebrated the seventh annual Tempranillos al Mundo international wine competition. The competition concluded with the winning wines revealed. The highest scoring Tempranillo wine—the “Great Gold”—was the Mirto 2006 de Bodegas Ramón Bilbao from Rioja, made from 100% Tempranillo from 70-plus-year-old vines. “We went through an impressive selection of Tempranillos sent from over 12 countries,” said moderator Kevin Zraly. “It was surprising to see such an array of Tempranillos from around the world. Tempranillo is certainly on the rise, and I’m looking forward to seeing it become one of the top varietals.” Facing fierce competition among over 400 Tempranillo submissions from around the world, 54 wines won gold medals and 70 won silver. With entries from Spain, Mexico, Greece, Argentina, Australia, France, Italy, Peru, Portugal, Turkey, Thailand, Venezuela and the U.S., the gold- and silver-winning wines represented Spain, Argentina, the U.S. and Greece.
