Principal’s Update
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope you and your families enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving. As the winter holidays quickly
approach, I would like to extend my well wishes to you and your family for a happy and healthy
holiday season. Additionally, I would like to thank you for all of your support during my third year as
principal of Jefferson Primary School. Since September, the teachers, staff and I have been taking
steps to implement our school-wide goals. Firstly, we continue to implement curriculum aligned with
the Common Core Learning Standards. Secondly, we are using data to promote student achievement
and close the achievement gap. And lastly, we are focused on strengthening home ↔ school
communication and further increase parent engagement to involve and inform parents and families as
essential partners in helping students achieve college and career readiness.

We were happy to see so many families involved in our school events this year. We welcomed many
parents during our Meet the Teacher, Parent Workshops, Coffee with the Principal Parent Workshop
and Parent Teacher Conferences. We are thankful for our supportive PTA who sponsored school
events, including the Kindergarten Harvest Festival, Family Fun Night and Picture Day.
I want to thank all of the generous families that donated food to the Helping Hand Mission for the
Thanksgiving holiday. Our fourth grade Jefferson Jaguar Leadership Team was proud to help
organize the donated food and load it onto the truck that went to The Mission. Today, we began to
collect new, unused and unwrapped toys for the Family Service League and the Tri Community &
Youth Agency. We will also be collecting gently used children and adult coats for the Helping Hand
Mission. Both are wonderful ways to give back to the community and an important lesson for our
children. There will be designated boxes in our lobby until December 12th to collect toys and coats.
About a week ago, members of the Huntington High School Leadership Team along with their
Leadership coaches, Mr. Thorbourne and Mr. Wilson, came to Jefferson and shared the importance
of learning and preparing for college and career with our Leadership Team. Our students had the
opportunity to ask the high school students questions about their experiences. It was wonderful to
see how interested our student leaders were in attending college at such an early age.
We continue to award medals and certificates to students who demonstrate their ability to be safe,
responsible and respectful citizens during monthly "SPOT" Assemblies. As Jefferson Jaguars, we
"SPOT" our students when they exhibit those characteristics. During the month of November, we
focused on the newly instituted Traffic Light “Speaking Zones”. The red represents silent working,
the yellow represents quiet working and the green represents quiet socialization. During daily
morning announcements, fourth grade students provided helpful tips that our children can put into
action. Some examples of tips were:
· The red zone is silent, silent hands, silent mouths, silent listening.
· Yellow zone is a whisper voice. A whisper voice means only your partners or group can
hear you. It’s like you are trying to tell a secret.
· An example of a green zone is the cafeteria. You are talking with your friends using
your inside voice.
During the month of December, students will work on being good helpers. We will be teaching
students that helping means to give assistance, to cooperate and to make something less difficult for
someone. We will also teach the children that helping is providing support to others. Being a good
helper is aligned with the toy and coat drive where we are teaching our children to be helpful to
those who are in need.

Our entire student body has been practicing for the upcoming Winter Songfest scheduled for
December 16th. A flyer will be going out with the specific information relative to your child’s grade.

La Actualización de La Directora
Estimados Padres y Guardianas,
Espero que usted y su familia haya disfrutado un Día de Acción de Gracias fabuloso. Mientras se acercan los días
festivos me gustaría desear a usted y toda su familia lo mejor. Además, me gustaría agradecerle por todo su apoyo
durante mi tercer año como la directora de Jefferson. Desde septiembre, los maestros, la facultad, y yo hemos hecho
pasos para poner en práctica nuestras metas de toda la escuela. En primer lugar, seguimos implementar el currículo
basado en los Estándares Estatales Comunes. En segundo lugar, estamos usando datos para aumentar el desempeño
estudiantil y cerrar la brecha académica. Por último, nos enfocamos en la relación entre la familia y la escuela y
aumentar la participación de los padres involucrarlos como compañeros esenciales en ayudar a sus hijos lograr la
preparación necesaria para la universidad y las carreras.

Estamos felices ver a nuestras familias involucradas en eventos escolares este año. Dimos la bienvenida a muchos
padres para La noche de Conocer al Maestro, Talleres para Padres, Café con la Directora, y Conferencias de Padres y
Profesores. Estamos agradecidos por nuestra PTA de apoyo quien ha patrocinado eventos escolares, incluyendo el
festival de la Cosecha para el Kínder, La Noche de Diversión Familiar, y el día de fotos.
Quiero dar las gracias a todas las generosas familias quien ha donado comida para el Día de Acción de Gracias.
Nuestro equipo del liderazgo del cuarto grado de Jefferson estaba orgulloso ayudar organizar la comida donada y
cargarlas en el camión. Hoy, empezamos a colectar juguetes nuevos, desempacados para la Liga de Servicio de
Familia y la Tri Community & Youth Agency. También vamos a colectar abrigos suavemente usados para niños y
adultos. Los dos son maneras fabulosas dar a la comunidad y una lección importante a nuestros hijos. Habrán cajas
designadas en nuestro vestíbulo hasta el 12 de diciembre colectar los juguetes y abrigos.
Hace una semana, los miembros del equipo de liderazgo de la escuela secundaria junto con sus entrenadores,
Sr. Thorbourne y Sr. Wilson, vino a Jefferson y compartieron la importancia de aprender y prepararse para la
universidad y una carrera con nuestro equipo de liderazgo de Jefferson. Nuestros estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad
preguntarles a los estudiantes de la escuela secundaria preguntas sobre sus experiencias. Fue fantástico ver que interesados fueron nuestros estudiantes de liderazgo asistir a la universidad.
Seguimos dar medallas y certificados a los estudiantes quien demuestran su capacidad de ser ciudadanos seguros,
responsables, y respetuosos. Como “Jaguares de Jefferson” reconocemos nuestros estudiantes cuando exhiben estas
características. Durante el mes de noviembre, nos enfocamos en el semáforo “Zonas de Hablar”. El rojo representa
un lugar de trabajo silencioso, el amarillo representa un lugar de trabajo colaborativo y callado, y el verde representa
socialización callada. Durante los anuncios diarios, los estudiantes del cuarto grado proporcionan consejos útiles que
nuestros hijos pueden usar. Algunos ejemplos de los consejos fueron:

Durante el mes de diciembre, los estudiantes trabajarán como ser ayudantes buenos. Enseñaremos a los estudiantes
que ayudar significa ofrecer asistencia, cooperar, y hacer algo menos difícil para alguien. También enseñaremos a los
niños que ayudar proveer apoyo a los otros. Ser un ayudante bueno es relacionado a nuestra colecta de comida y ropa
porque estamos ensenándoles ser útiles a las personas necesitadas.
Nuestra escuela entera ha sido practicando por la festival de canciones programado por el 16 de diciembre. Vamos a
informarle con la información específica sobre el grado de su hijo/a.
Estamos muy orgullosos de nuestros estudiantes de Jefferson. Espero que hable con su hijo/a durante la temporada
festiva sobre sus logros y disfrute el tiempo festivo. ¡Tenga un día feriado fantástico!
