IMPORTANT NOTICE
If the SMU D e d m a n S c h o o l o f L a w Civil Clinic or Consumer Clinic accepts you as a
client, your case will be handled primarily by law students under the supervision of law
professors or staff attorneys. You will not be able to meet with supervisors to discuss your
case. If your case is accepted by the SMU D e d m a n S c h o o l o f L a w Civil Clinic or
Consumer Clinic, you understand and agree that your case may be handled by several different
law students, especially if your case lasts for several months.
The Civil Clinic or Consumer Clinic is not obligated in any way to provide you with legal
representation of any kind until and unless the SMU D e d m a n S c h o o l o f L a w Civil Clinic
or Consumer Clinic accepts you as a client. Inquiring about legal representation at the Civil
Clinic or Consumer Clinic does not preserve your legal rights. DO NOT wait to hear from
the SMU D e d m a n S c h o o l o f L a w Civil Clinic or Consumer Clinic before you take further
action necessary to preserve your legal rights. If you have been served court papers or have a
court date set, you MUST respond to them and continue to seek legal representation from
other sources.
Processing your application will take several weeks. This process begins with a review of
your application. If your application passes the review, you will be placed on our waiting list.
Please be aware that being on our waiting list does not guarantee that you will receive legal
representation. If the SMU D e d m a n S c h o o l o f L a w Civil Clinic or Consumer Clinic has
an opening for a new client, we may then contact you for an intake interview. Please provide
thus with a current phone number and address or email address so that we may contact you; if
this is not provided, your name will be removed from our waiting list and you will have to
reapply for legal representation. It may take several weeks before we contact you concerning
your eligibility for legal representation.
The purpose of the intake interview is to gather more information and to evaluate your case.
The decision on whether to take your case will be made after the intake interview. If your
application for legal representation does not pass the initial review process, then the SMU
D e d m a n S c h o o l o f L a w Civil Clinic or Consumer Clinic will contact you in writing at the
last known address that you provide. The SMU D e d m a n S c h o o l o f L a w Civil Clinic or
Consumer Clinic will not be responsible for lost or misdirected mail.
After you submit your application, you may send relevant documents to the Civil or Consumer
Clinic either by mail or fax to the address/fax above. Do not send original documents. Send
copies only. The SMU D e d m a n S c h o o l o f L a w Civil Clinic or Consumer Clinic cannot
return documents and we will not be responsible for lost or destroyed documents. Also, after
you have submitted your application, please do not contact the SMU D e d m a n S c h o o l o f
L a w Civil Clinic or Consumer Clinic to inquire of your application status. We will contact
you when we have processed your application.
