Saint Mary Roman Catholic Church 1000 North Jefferson Avenue, Goldsboro NC 27530-3141 919-734-5033 Rev. Patrick Keane, Pastor Deacon Webster James August 11, 2013—19th Sunday in Ordinary Time Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, Mary August 15 Holy Day of Obligation In recent weeks, we have reviewed how the Churches of East and West have enriched one another, and this Thursday's solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was born in the Eastern Church. It is a gift from the ancient Church of Jerusalem, a commemoration of the death of Mary, and a feast charged with a deep sense of the Resurrection. Mary, the first disciple, is the first to share fully in Christ's victory over death. In the tradition of the East, today is the "Dormition of the Theotokos," or the "Falling Asleep of the God-bearer." There is no shadow of death or gloom in the theology, since this is seen as a transformation of Mary's life into a heavenly and immortal existence. There is a sense in the tradition that she who made earth heavenly and exalted the human race by her faithfulness is glorified today. A persistent legend among Orthodox Christians tells how all the disciples, except Thomas, who was preaching in India, were present at Mary's death and burial, and sat by the tomb for three days. On the third day, Thomas saw Mary's body rising to heaven. She greeted him as "my friend," and he was escorted by angels to proclaim her assumption to the others, who then realized her tomb was empty. Thus Thomas, the one who expressed doubt at the resurrection of Christ, received a gift from Mary: the chance to proclaim resurrection faith to the disciples. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. From August 4th forward, the parish will be called the Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary. Saint Mary Church was granted this designation because of its historical significance to the Diocese and its worthiness of art and architecture. This designation also acknowledges the parishioners who over the last 100 years have demonstrated a deep dedication to the Church, her Magisterium, to the Holy Father, and to the Catholic Faith. In granting this title, the Church intends to strengthen the relationship of the Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary with the Chair of Peter and to make the Basilica a center of special liturgical and pastoral ministry in our Diocese. In his letter with the Decree, Archbishop Arthur Roche, Secretary to the Congregation of Diving Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments stated his hope that the “granting of the honorific title [of Basilica] will be helpful for the deepening of the liturgical life centered upon the new Minor Basilica.” Bishop Burbidge asks that we join him, along with the parish community of the Basilica Shrine of Saint Mary, and the entire Diocese in thanks to God for His goodness and to the Holy See for this honor 4 August 11, 2013 Respect Life Operation School Choice Every large city in America has dozens and dozens of high schools in it. And in these schools the students are taught a great many things across a large number of subjects. Of course, schools are where the young go to get educated; they are where various views and perspectives are openly discussed and where adolescent minds begin to form opinions that will likely stay with them throughout their entire lives. But what do these same students know about the grim reality of abortion? What open discussions are they having in their sex education classrooms about the fact that 1/3 of all teen pregnancies end in abortion and that teenagers account for over 20% of all abortions in America annually? The Center for Bio-Ethical Reform knows the sad answer to these questions and that is why it has developed “Operation School Choice.” For more information on “Operation School Choice” go to http://www.prolifearticles.com Please, Pray the Rosary for an end to abortion. Immigrant workers generally do not compete with citizens of our country for unskilled jobs. Immigrant workers fill crucial jobs in important industries that many citizens of our country will not fill, such as in the agricultural industries. By enacting immigration reform, both the wages of citizens and those of immigrant workers will increase, as the pool of unauthorized workers is reduces.
