Spanish III Summer Assignment.
¡Practica Español durante el verano!

Exposure to foreign language outside of the classroom is critical. The purpose of this ”assignment” is to
find entertaining ways to experience Spanish. The challenge is to discover authentic material that will
motivate you to stay engaged. Find something you are passionate about, it may be music, fashion, travel,
culture, literature, famous people, movies, art, sports, or cooking.
The summer assignment focuses on the three modes of communication:
Interpretive how well you understand Spanish through reading and listening.
Reading: newspapers, books, magazines, etc.
Listening: TV stations, movies, radio stations, native speakers..
Presentational how you communicate your thoughts in Spanish.
Writing: essays on topics that interest you: education, health, sports, technologies, music etc.
Speaking: Make a 2-minute presentation about a topic that motivates you: a movie review etc.
Interpersonal how well you can carry-on a conversation with one or more people
“On demand” Spanish speaking: practice dialogs, debates, interviews, Skype, phone calls
Writings: letters, e-mails, chats, Facebook…
As you practice the three modes of communication you will also apply important elements of Spanish
grammar and vocabulary. This will increase and improve your Spanish proficiency, enhance your
personal enjoyment of Spanish speaking, provide confidence about taking your AP exam and save college
money.
Summer assignment: Complete and document the following in this order:
Lecturas: minimo 2 summaries 5 points each
Read anything in Spanish and count it toward your hours. Your documentation must provide the name of
the source or website, title, date and a summary in Spanish that will illustrate you read and understood the
article.
Possible resources:
-Free newspaper in public library and other places “ la jornada latina”
-Spanish Books from the Public library, borrow up to 50 at a time or
-Children’s books online
-Read any newspaper from Spanish newspapers www.laprensaescrita.com
-revistas www.hola.es www.pronto.es www.diezminutos.es
Escuchar: minimo 3 summaries 5 points each
Listen to anything in Spanish that interest you. Your documentation must provide the name of the source
or website, title, date and a summary that will illustrate that you read and understood the speaking.
Get creative here! You can use songs, movies, radio, or listen to native speakers having conversations.
Listening resources:
-The website for the AP College Board Spanish Exams is a great resource, it includes, rubrics,
test from previous years, samples from students and scores.
-www.rtve.es this is the main TV station in Spain, choose something that motivates you and
keeps you engaged. The website includes, soap operas, documentaries, newscast, movies,
cooking programs and other interesting programs. One that I recommend for culture and
geography in found under “Programas: españoles en el mundo”.
-www.bbc.co.uk/mundo/ this is a great resource for podcast on current events.
-www.unmultimedia.org/radio/spanish also covers current events
-http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/spanish/mividaloca/ Mi vida loca, una telenovela interactive
muy interesante!

-An essay on the highlights of your summer.
-An essay on any summer celebration.
-Tell about a trip you took this summer.
This is a presentational communication piece. Use rich and precise vocabulary, grammar, a wide variety
of verb tenses including at least one subjunctive tense verb. Use cohesive linking words. A list under
“Spanish Writing Tools” in Moodle: Spanish Resources [moodle.boone.kyschools.us] or search online.
GRAMMAR 10 for 10 pts.
Look through grammar units 6-9 on Studyspanish.com and identify what you need to improve. Complete
15 basic quizzes and mini tests that provide practice in that area. Have a printed copy of your
Studyspanish.com report card to provide evidence of lessons, dates and scores.
The second resource to utilize is www.colby.edu/~bknelson/SLC/index.php. Complete five study
modules and take a screen-shot of completed work to document.
VOCABULARY 5 test for 15 pts.
Go to quizlet.com and search for vocabulary list under our new textbook: Descubre level 3. Complete
tests for 5 lessons and print the first page of test results that shows score and date as evidence.
In order to do well on your next level of Spanish, we want to continually improve our Spanish
communication skills. By working over the summer we can hit the ground running when the new school
year begins.
