Advent: Waiting in Joy for the coming of Christ
There is a memory that comes to me very frequently during
the time of Advent. This is the memory when I was around 6
years old when my mother would tell us that my dad would
come to Mexico from the United States. I remember how
these news of my father visiting us brought enormous joy to
my heart and a sense of hope and longing to see him and to
be embraced by him. I remember that from the very moment I
knew he was coming I would try to behave much better and
be more obedient to my mother.
I would also go outside the house every day to wait for him. Sometimes with
some candy or sometimes with an ice cream cone that would melt in my
hands. What was very strange is that he would come whenever I least
expected him to come, usually in the middle of the night. But the beauty of this
is that he would wait right next to me sitting on the bed waiting for me to wake
up. I remember that when I opened my eyes and saw him right next to me, my
heart would feel such a tremendous happiness and I would run to his arms full
of joy because the promise of him coming home had been fulfilled.
I think this memory comes to me often around this time because all the
readings in the time of Advent lead our hearts to experience the joy and the
hope that something good will happen. “The days are coming, says the Lord,
when I will fulfill my promise.” THE PROMISE OF ADVENT IS THAT GOD
WILL BE WITH US ALL THE DAYS OF OUR LIFE!!!
The time of Advent is a time of hopeful expectation. It is a time to live again
the great event in which people waited for the moment God would manifest
himself to the world. The moment in which the Divine Word, the Second
Person of the Trinity became man and made his dwelling within us. It is the
moment when God took a human body to be close to us. The time of Advent
is also a time of waiting for the Second coming of Jesus when everything will
come to an end and we will finally be completely united to God for ever.
As we await for these magnificent events of history, we are reminded by the
readings to prepare ourselves for these life changing moments. In order to
prepare for these events, there is a need for us to understand more deeply the
“ways and the paths of the Lord.” There is a need for us to contemplate in our
hearts the life of Jesus “so as to strengthen our hearts and to be blameless in
holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all
his holy ones.” There is also a need to be aware that our hearts do not
become “drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily
life, and that day catch us by surprise like a trap” as we await for the “time of
our redemption.”
When we allow the grace of God to prepare our minds, hearts and bodies
we will not be afraid anymore for the moment when Jesus comes back again
and everything comes to an end. When we receive that necessary grace for
holiness, we will be able to celebrate with more joy the magnificent event
through which God changed the history of the world forever when He made
“his dwelling among us.” We will wait the Second coming of Christ, which we
do not know when it will happen, with a heart full of joy like a little child who
receives his father after a long time of not seeing him, like a little child who
sees how the promise of the coming of his father has been fulfilled.

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Adviento: Esperando con Gozo
la venida de Cristo
Hay una memoria que viene a mí muy
regularmente durante el tiempo de Adviento.
Es la memoria de cuando tenía como 6
años y mi papa iba de Estados Unidos a
México a visitarnos. Recuerdo muy bien
cómo al saber que mi papa vendría a vernos
traía un gozo enorme a mi corazón y me
pasaba día tras día mirando hacia la calle
esperando con ansia la venida de mi padre. Cuando me enteraba que mi
padre vendría, todo el tiempo trataba de prepararme portándome mejor y
siendo obediente a mi mama. A veces lo esperaba con un dulce o un
helado que se me derretía en mis manos. Lo curioso de todo esto es que
siempre llegaba en las noches cuando menos lo esperaba y recuerdo que
cuando habría los ojos por la mañana estaba esperándome sentado en la
cama. Cuando habría los ojos y miraba su figura al lado mío todo mi ser se
llenaba de alegría y gozo y corría a sus brazos sabiendo que la promesa
de que el vendría se había cumplido.
Esta memoria viene a mí porque creo que todas las lecturas de
Adviento, si las recibimos y las leemos en oración, llevaran a nuestros
corazones a experimentar el gozo y la esperanza de que algo bueno
pasara. “Se acercan los días, dice el Señor, en que cumpliré mi promesa.”
¿Cuál es esa promesa de Adviento? LA ¡PROMESA DE QUE DIOS
ESTARA CON NOSOTROS TODOS LOS DIAS DE NUESTRA VIDA!!!
El tiempo de Adviento es un tiempo de espera. Es revivir en nuestras
vidas la gran expectación del evento de la Encarnación cuando el Verbo
Divino, la Segunda Persona de la Trinidad, vino a nosotros y se encarnó
en un cuerpo humano. “Dios se hizo hombre y habito entre nosotros.” El
tiempo de Adviento es un tiempo también de espera de la promesa de la
Segunda venida de Jesús cuando todo tendrá su fin y estaremos
totalmente unidos a Dios.
En ese sentido, las lecturas también nos recuerdan la necesidad de
prepararnos. La necesidad de entender más profundamente “los caminos
del Señor.” La necesidad de recibir la gracia que “conserve nuestros
corazones irreprochables en la Santidad hasta el día en que venga
nuestro Señor Jesucristo en compañía de todos sus santos.” Nos
recuerdan, la necesidad de alejarnos de los “vicios, la embriagues, el
libertinaje y las preocupaciones de esta vida” para recibir la hora de
nuestra “liberación.”
Cuando nosotros dejemos que la gracia de Dios prepare nuestros
corazones, nuestras mentes, y nuestros cuerpos ya no tendremos miedo
de la venida de Cristo cuando todo llegue a su fin. Cuando recibamos esa
gracia necesaria para la Santidad, celebraremos más profundamente ese
evento que cambio al mundo para siempre cuando Dios “hizo su morada
entre nosotros.” Esperaremos la Segunda venida de Cristo, que no
sabemos cuándo será, con un corazón de gozo como un niño que se
alegra al ver a su padre después de no haberlo visto en mucho tiempo.
Anhelaremos la venida de Cristo como un niño que se alegra de que la
promesa de ver a su padre se ha cumplido. Escuchemos esa promesa,
recibamos esa promesa, y saboreemos esa promesa.

Celebration of Our Lady of
Guadalupe
Everyone is invited to the diocesan
celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe
on Dec. 5 at St. Anthony Marie de
Claret Parish in Kyle. Busses will
leave from the parish at 8:30 a.m. and
take participants to the starting point
for
the
procession
at
5940
McNaughton in Kyle. The procession
will then begin through the streets of
Kyle at 9:30 a.m. Mass celebrated by
Bishop Daniel Garcia will begin at
noon, and a festival will follow. There
will be Matachines dancers, Mariachi
music, as well as food and activities
