The other members of the golf team, senior Sev Stoffel, sophomore Eric LoVell, and Nate Drake (a junior from University High School), missed the cut at the tournament. CHSAA only takes twenty individuals and two teams to state. DeNovellis described the course at Mariana to have “the fastest greens all year, (having the) pin placement being tucked behind bunkers, and the greens having many ridges so there were hardly any straight putts.” Knowing this, DeNovellis had his philosophy Spartan coach Mary Lordemann discusses Monday night’s 2-0 loss to Central. West’s next home game is Thursday against Frederick. Jordyn Book/ West Word set: he would not go straight for the pins but rather try to hit the green and settle for a two-putt to get away with easy pars. “If I made the green and got a birdie, that was just a bonus,” DeNovellis said. This year was the first that DeNovellis qualified for State individually as last year the team qualified. DeNovellis took his practice round at the Rolling Hills Country Club in Golden yesterday. This will give him an opportunity to map out the course and find obstacles to avoid as well as determining the speed of the greens. “The practice round really helps me know which holes I can be aggressive on,” he said. He is not content with just qualifying for the State tournament, though. “Now that I’ve made it, I’m certainly going to go out and compete,” he said, “If I just put two rounds together, then maybe there is a chance (to win the tournament).” Spartans offense comes up empty By Jordyn Book Staff Writer West (1-8) put up a good fight against the cross town rival, Greeley Central (6-3) on Monday night before the rain came. Multiple injuries add to frustration for struggling football team By Staff Reports Thursday, September 20th, the Greeley West football team faced Niwot. West was able to come out strong in the first half with a 7-0 lead. However, the Spartans were unable to hold them, losing 14- 10, due to several injuries. West’s strong and effective defense took a beating by the Cougars. Left tackle, Walker Brown, and right guard rookie, Greg Wall, went unnoticed while fellow linemen endured pain. Brian Halsey suffered a season threatening knee injury and Leo Salcido dislocated his finger. With these injuries, quarterback Eric Seeley and standout David Eddy had a hard time running their offense. ”All you can really do is take it and learn from it. We’re going to do just that. We’re going to work on a few things this week in practice and be ready to go for Thompson Valley,” left guard Chris Harris said. Harris played on a stitched up knee. - Mariah Trzeciak contributed to this story Save $5 On Any $20 Purchase No cash value. One per person, per visit. Valid at Greeley location only.
