Ester and her neighbor Denise lived one block away from school. They
walked home together every day. On Friday afternoons they always brought
a snack to eat.

When Denise was done with her snack, she always remembered to put the
trash into the trashcan. She would also remind Ester how important it is to
recycle and not to litter. “It harms the animals and makes our neighborhood
look ugly!” Denise would explain.
reciclar y no ensuciar.

But Ester was full of excuses. “My backpack is heavy. My hands are tired.
Trash is dirty.” Ester’s favorite excuse was “A little trash doesn’t hurt
anyone.” So she said good-bye to Denise and dropped her trash on the
grass right outside her house.

One afternoon, Ester’s dad came home early. “I have a surprise for you!” he
said while holding a cardboard box behind his back. Ester opened the box
and smiled with delight. It was a kitten! It was round, with gray and white
stripes. She named the kitten Sneakers.

That night, Ester read a story to Sneakers. “I love you so much!” she said as
she hugged her. Ester placed Sneakers gently on her bed. “I promise I will
take good care of you.”

Ester's bedroom window was open that evening. Sneakers crept out to
explore. She saw the moon and stars. She heard crickets and other night
noises. She even climbed a tree to meet a wakeful squirrel.
desvelada.
12
13
From the tree, Sneakers spotted a shiny object on the grass. It was beautiful
and it smelled good too. Sneakers wanted to bring the treasure back to
Ester.
Estaba bonito y
olía agradable también. Sneakers quería llevarle el tesoro a Ester.
14
15
But, when she tried to pick the treasure up, it became stuck on her head.
Sneakers couldn't see and it was hard to breathe. The poor kitten cried and
meowed as loud as she could.
Sneakers no
podía ver y era difícil respirar. La pobre gatita lloró y comenzó a maullar
tan fuerte como pudo.
16
17
The loud cries woke up everyone in Ester's house. Her dad went out to see
what was wrong. When he saw Sneakers, he rescued her from the empty
potato chip bag and brought her back inside to Ester.
18
19
"What happened?" asked Ester as she cuddled her kitten.
"Someone littered in our yard and Sneakers got stuck," her dad answered.
"Even an empty bag of chips can be dangerous for a young animal."
Ester felt really sad because she knew it was her trash. She told her dad that
she had been littering in the yard. Her dad hugged her and said, "I'm very
proud of you for telling the truth. Tomorrow, you can help me clean up all this
trash."
Mañana, tú me puedes
ayudar a limpiar toda esa basura.”

The next day was Saturday. Ester spent the whole morning cleaning up the
yard with her dad. Then, she and Sneakers played all afternoon in the green
grass beneath the blue sky.
